SOTC on isshin samurai tribal

Hey Breastiny, good to see other people brewing with Isshin!

I'd see about maybe running Kentaro, the Smiling Cat as a cheap mana-fixer, to ensure you never have the wrong colors. Fumiko the Lowblood is an excellent card here; your opponents are forced to swing, even with creature they don't want want to attack with. They will either attack other opponents (helping you win) or attack into a pumped-up Fumiko, which will lose them their creatures. In a true Samurai tribal deck, Nagao, Bound by Honor, Takeno, Samurai General, Konda, Lord of Eiganjo and Godo, Bandit Warlord can't be omitted.

As niche picks, consider Iizuka the Ruthless and Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo. The former will put your foes on the back foot, as they never know when the double strike might come through. The latter provides defensive utility, especially late-game when you have access to more mana.

On the non-Samurai end of things, some Equipment that synergizes with Isshin seems like a good call. Sword of the Animist gets even better by fetching you 2 basics instead of 1, while Sigil of Valor and Reaper's Talisman double up on your other 'attacks alone' effects. Other Equipment improved by Isshin includes Argentum Armor, Delver's Torch, Moonsilver Spear Sword of Hours and Trepanation Blade. If you find yourself in need of additional (non-Samurai) cannon fodder, Captain's Claws and Sigiled Sword of Valeron will do in a pinch.

Hope this helps! Good luck :)

Hey! I love samurai and have a few tips you may like. I would probably say that adding 2 Sensei Golden-Tail and taking out a Hand of Honor and a Inner-Chamber Guard would help. Sensei is a legendary samurai but is still only a 2 cmc. On top of that, you can use it to give more bushido to other samurai, which would be helpful once you drop Takeno, Samurai General. I would also recommend that you replace Hold the Line with Righteousness. yes, righteousness only targets one blocker, and not all, but it is only a 1 cmc, and you can target just Bushi Tenderfoot  Flip to cause it to flip easier. And finally, a cheaper alternative to Angel's Grace is Worship. Or if you want to stay in the Kamigawa block for your defense, you can use the kamigawa printing of Ghostly Prison.

Hope this helps! you can check out my Long Live the Samurai Deck or my Long Live the Monarch EDH deck for some nice ideas.

a7thson , I believe you are confusing Bushido for Ninjutsu. Same block, different keyword lol. i.e. Takeno, Samurai General , Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow.

Bushido is a poor man's reimagining of Flanking, and that wasn't great either; IMO. Either way, a 4 Mana cost ninja with Ninjutsu for 3 isn't bad. The added bolt effect isn't bad either, and it's legendary, so it can't be abused as much as a nonlegendary. All in all, I'd give it a 7/10.

leviathan_cross thanks! I’ve realised it could do with maybe another boardwipe, like Fumigate, and Helm of the Host may not really be worth it so could put Sensei's Divining Top in for some card draw, but I like the idea of multiple Saskia’s spreading the damage love around, or multiple Takeno, Samurai General super buffing the samurais. So as usual it’s still a work in progress lol.

i have a really hard time believing you won any games at all against those decks, and especially not matches. almost no removal, creatures are small and don't do anything, and you run cards with a cmc of 6 or 7 that will never even be cast in modern. you explain your card choices by simply telling what it does as if you think we can't mouse over the link and read it ourselves. also, "flavor out the wazoo" doesnt win games. powerful effects win games, which is not something Takeno, Samurai General has. you say you're not brave enough to run Konda, Lord of Eiganjo... yet its still in the deck.

One more thing. If you want to keep the samurai theme and keep it legal you could do it a couple different ways:

1) Pick a different mono white legendary samurai.

You're options would be: Konda, Lord of Eiganjo, Nagao, Bound by Honor, Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo, Sensei Golden-Tail, & Takeno, Samurai General

2) Pick another legendary creature that is multiple colors

Back when the original zendikar block was released, the ally creature type was introduced and had good cards in all 5 colors. Until recently though, there wasn't a 5 colored identy for an ally commander. Instead players who wanted to have an ally deck would do something along the lines of having Progenitus or another 5 color creature as the commander. Sure it wasn't an ally but it allowed players to use any color for their ally tribal deck.

Just food for thought.

Playing Mirror Entity can give you a buff, as well as turn everything into a Samurai.

Crib Swap and Angel of Flight Alabaster is a combo, giving you a removal spell each turn.

Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho can help to protect your commander and other Samurai's. Adding in Takeno, Samurai General also gives you a buff as well
