playtesting

sparkeyjoe25, 8 years ago

so after playtesting i knew i wanted to add a few more things to make the deck more refined, so took out the strionic resonator and sevra as they depended on me having my commander out and in some situations i couldnt get both out or make it work. strionic if i started with it early game didnt have much impact till mid-late game when i started filling up the grave. so put living death and carrion feeder for them, as living death can become a win con and carrion feeder is just a another cheap sack outlet for meren and with the first playtest it worked out awesome....gonna add lord of extinction and razaketh(once its released) to see if itll make things better. and lord as a win con with jarrad late game to finish off all or ne opponent left standing

FNM Update

Plazbo, 8 years ago

Took the deck to FNM at the most competitive place here locally.

Went 2-2. Could have been 3-1.

First game went against Mardu Vehicles. Oh man. What a sweep. Took the round 2-0 easily after getting my anointed procession/hidden stockpiles out. Never saw a Heart of Kiran and the only threats she really brought were Glorybringer which got exiled by Angel of Sanctions or ignored because I could gain more than 4 life per turn thanks to Anointer Priest and her Embalm.

Second game was much harder. Black Green Energy with Constrictor and counters. He beat me down the first game before I had time to stabilize, but after the sideboard I won 2-1. Second round was in my favor and I was in the driver seat the whole time with a sideboarded in Noxious Gearhulk to deal with his Verdurous. I also sideboarded Grasp of Darkness and Collective Effort to help deal with some more earlier removal. Last round was crazy with him bringing me down to like 3 or 4 but I got 2 Anointed Procession down and had an embalmed Anointer Priest on the field. At this point I had 6 clues because he used Yahenni's Expertise to clear the board while I had Ulvenwald Mysteries and Anointed Procession out. I got to crack a bunch of clues, draw a bunch of cards, make a bunch of 1/1 white soldiers, and gain a bunch of life. The combos were crazy. Went back up to like 40 hp and he just scooped.

3rd game was WB Zombies. Got creamed the first round, not a good hand to keep against them. Second round got him down to 3 and topdecked Collective Defiance to put counters on 2 creatures of mine to swing for lethal, didn't see his Shambling Vents tucked neatly under his other lands that he chumped with and then won the game.

4th game was against some boros aggro deck using Solemn Recruit Selfless Spirit, Thraben Inspector, and Exemplars. His deck was just too fast and got under me before I could setup. Also perfect that his only removal Declaration in Stone works the best against my deck. Eh.

Summary: Half way through was tied for first, ended up 7th. lol

Update with the Hours of Devastation

Toupix, 8 years ago

So there's some changes, the combo I wanted to use with Nahiri's wrath was to unstable so I changed the use of the red to anoter source of -1/-1 counters with more blasts ( perhaps I will add a few others like Shock but also spells like Driven / Driven / Despair or Grind / Dust ) and some lovefulll Obelisk Spiders. Also I'm thinkin about using the ability of Ifnirs deadlands, so that's why Ramunap Excavator also whith him I can discards or cycle lands and play it after. Also, the Scorpion God is for me too expensive for what he's doing, 4 mana would have be greate, so I don't think he has his place in my deck unfortunatelly :/

Champion's Helm

MegaMatt13, 8 years ago

Finally picked up a copy of Champion's Helm. Swapped out Angelic Destiny for it. Giving Sram hexproof is key in this deck. Angelic Destiny is a big buff but the return to hand ability doesn't work with Sram. Since Sram returns to the command zone when destroyed, he doesn't technically die.

Ideology Shift

Removed: Mystic Remora, Rite of Replication, and Confiscate

Added: Counterspell, Swan Song, and Negate

As a brief note: If you've been following this deck since it's creation you'll know that I really intended to make this deck while completely excluding counterspells. I had two main reasons for this. This deck was made to be fun and pseudo-group-hug and having your spells countered isn't fun (neither is getting your creatures stolen, but at least you got to play the creatures in the first place and control magic is easier to play around than counterspells). The other reason is because I sought to take advantage of an insane board-state by having one-sided removal or by taking the biggest threat on the board; this has not changed.

The removal of both Mystic Remora and Rite of Replication were both due to price. Every printing has risen above $2 and are no longer legal for this deck. Confiscate was removed purely to find room for other cards in the deck. I felt like the deck was a little too heavy on control magic and Confiscate was the weakest of the bunch. Other cards I considered cutting were Arbiter of the Ideal, Gate to the AEther, Cryptoplasm. Renegade Doppelganger, Colfenor's Urn, Mind Unbound, and Bident of Thassa; but in the end I liked all of those cards a little more than Confiscate.

Now to the addition of the counterspells. They're only here for one thing only: protection. The experience that I've had playing the deck and the feedback that I've gotten from everyone else always goes the same way. People get their Braids trigger, then they try and remove Braids because they've already gotten their benefit from her; and why wouldn't they? If you are trying to win the game, there is no benefit to letting Braids live past your turn. So to counter that, I've added cards like Swiftfoot Boots, Neurok Stealthsuit, Vanishing, and Vodalian Illusionist. But when you look at it, that is only 4 out of a 99 card deck. Nowhere near consistent enough for a key part of our strategy. That's where these counterspells come in. I don't want to counter what their deck is doing, I just want to counter any removal coming towards Braids. That's why a key part of choosing these counterspells is making sure that they were cheap in mana cost. I want to be able to cast Braids and have a counterspell ready to back her up.

Once again, 7 out of 99 cards dedicating to protecting Braids with only the counterspells not requiring any setup is still very inconsistent; so I'm going to be looking into adding more ways to protect her in the future. Alexi's Cloak and Arcane Denial are cards that are definitely going into the deck once I get a copy of them. For now, this is where I currently am with what I have.

What do you think? Do you agree with this change in direction in the deck or are you still very anti-counterspell? Please let me know and leave some recommendations for some good protection for Braids!

Going Pauper

levy120, 8 years ago

Here's the old Build for Old Time's Sake :) This is an experiment I slumped together out of two 'leftover' mono decks... I have _no_ idea whether or not this works since I've had no opportunity to test it yet - but games are sure to be long with this one. The Deathtouch Creatures and the Bridge are intended to stall the enemy. You only attack with this deck when nothing else is on the board than your early drops or you manage to get a set of demons or angels. If the wall is out by then, make sure to drop everything from your hand to the field so nothing can attack and take the enemy out with the Scholars. Go ahead - play your creatures. In its current state the deck is weak against Burn and Flying. * 2x Baleful Eidolon * 4x Blood Seeker * 4x Castigate * 3x Contaminated Bond * 1x Ensnaring Bridge * 3x Harsh Sustenance * 1x Intrepid Hero * 2x Kami of False Hope * 3x Orzhov Basilica * 3x Pillory of the Sleepless * 9x Plains * 4x Scholar of Athreos * 1x Skirsdag High Priest * 4x Suture Priest * 10x Swamp * 4x Typhoid Rats * 1x Vampire Nighthawk * 1x Xathrid Gorgon

Hour of Destruction Changes

DanteBeleren, 8 years ago

Not a lot going on for Liliana in this block (my opinion), but there are a few very notable cards despite lack of quantity. I already added in Liliana, Death's Majesty over Liliana of the Veil. Now I'm considering Liliana's Mastery and Razaketh, the Foulblooded.

My first thought of mastery was that it's too weak for my build with the lack of Zombie words and hordes of zombies, but the generate hordes without them. This give two zombies and anthems without getting wiped. Still on the fence though.

Razaketh is downright silly. I want all her Demon Lords in the deck, but unless Griselbrand ever sees the light of EDH again (unlikely) that won't happen. But I'm willing to make room for one or two.

Hour of Destruction Changes

DanteBeleren, 8 years ago

Although unlikely, I'm considering dropping the Clone/Theft theme for Sphinxs. I've been playing with the idea of switching to Wizards, but that is super generic as is, and most of my various playgroups have been enjoying playing with/against this as is (not having a win-con in blue tends to bring up people's moods).

So IF I go the Sphinx root, some considerations I'm considering are: Arbiter of the Ideal, Consecrated Sphinx, Master of Predicaments, Sphinx Ambassador, Sphinx of the Final Word, Sphinx of Uthuun, Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign, and Windreader Sphinx.

If I stay with clones/theft these: Mirage Mirror and Vizier of Many Faces.

And for either build I'm considering adding in both As Foretold and Pull from Tomorrow.

Hour of Destruction Changes

DanteBeleren, 8 years ago

With the release of Hour of Destruction, I'm looking hard at revamping this deck a bit. It can get there in a blaze of glory, but it often stumbles on itself to get there first. Currently considering cutting on the Phoenix "tribal" for creatures that interact better with Spellslinger fireballs at people.

Neheb, the Eternal is at the top of the list for considerations into the deck with that ability of his. Other potentials that come to mind are: Charmbreaker Devils, Combustible Gearhulk, Gratuitous Violencefoil, Harsh Mentor, Insult / Injury, Soul-Scar Mage, Thermo-Alchemist, War's Toll, Wildfire Eternal, and Young Pyromancer.

Hour of Destruction Changes

DanteBeleren, 8 years ago

Oh my god look at all the Selesnya kitties!

Adorned Pouncer, Oketra's Monument, Pride Sovereign, Prowling Serpopard, Regal Caracal, Rhonas's Monument from the Amonkhet block all have decent potential if I pursue more cat tribal shenanigans. Will play around with them and see what works (if any of them...).

Hour of Destruction Changes

DanteBeleren, 8 years ago

Looking to make some minor tweaks to the deck, probably remove a few boardwipes, but am interested in Anointed Procession, Hour of Revelation (yes I know it's a board wipe, but it's cheap), and Solemnity.
