Updated some of the land, needed more access to green. I hope this deck can be made into something, still working on it.

The Ramp Matchup

Disrok, 9 years ago

Last friday, I got myself against a GR Ramp, and seeing this archetype doing good at the pro tour, I see the necessity to increase the number of answers to this type of deck.

So for know I am increasing the big removals:

Out:

In:

Roast is out because it does not have any kind of use. With Siege Rhino out, I don't need to speed up my removals, in exchange of the condition, so I am adding a 4th (main + side) Ruinous Path, to make sure that I don't loose any creature.

Foul-Tongue Invocation can and should be swapped with To the Slaugther, as soon as I get my hands on it. Self-Inflicted Wound is to much conditional for it to be at the deck

SB

Against Bant Company, I just brought in the 3 Hallowed Moonlight, and took out some combination of Read the Bones, Anquished Unmaking, and Ob Nixilis Reignited, depending on how the opponent's deck looked. Against Ramp (which I did not play all day), I was going to bring in the Pitiless Horde, Infinite Obliteration, Anguished Unmaking, Duress and Archangel Avacyn for the Linvala, Languish, Grasp of Darkness, and a Read the Bones. Against most aggro, including Humans, I would bring in Ultimate Price, Flaying Tendrils, Duress, Anguished Unmaking, and Archangel Avacyn for the Transgress the Mind and Read the Bones.

MAJOR UPDATES: Reacting to Pro Tour SOI and more!

Ashockfan, 9 years ago

Ok, so we can breath a sigh of relief. No more 4x Declaration in Stone or other exile effects in every deck! The Pro Tour brought back the diversity of the format with some sweet brews - and now its time to adapt.

The major new decks are GB Seasons Past and Goggle ramp. Two other breakout decks that people had moved past are Esper Control/Dragons and GW Tokens. So here's how I've adapted:

-3 Tormenting Voice (Main) - Ok, so here's where testing comes in. Voice has been SUPER clunky for me, and is always the first card to be boarded out. it just doesn't DO much to help us. And with the addition of Dragonlord Kolaghan, we aren't nearly as reliant on the Reanimation theme to win. Casting the dragons works just fine, even though we'd rather reanimate them :D

+2 Languish (Main) - I've wanted to do this for some time, and finally found the card to cut. It also helps that most of the top decks (pre-existing and new) are bad against languish. That's GW Tokens, Bant Company, Humans, and GB Aristocrats.

+1 Kolaghan's Command (Main) - This is a response to Goggles decks doing really well, as well as the ramp aspect of that deck. Making Ramp discard cards is a great way to combat their gameplan, as is destroying Goggles, one of their routes to victory. This also goes really well with one of the other cards I've added to the SB that i'll talk about below.

-2 Clip Wings (Side) - In testing I've found that sweepers are much better to combat Ormendahl decks, and flyers like Ojutai and Avacyn are easier to kill with Grasp of Darkness

-2 Languish (Side) - Moved to main

-1 Greenwarden of Murasa (Side) - Greenwarden went from main to side to gone. This time the reason is because I just found a better card, which is up next. So lets get to that

+2 Goblin Dark-Dwellers (Side) - While thinking about how my deck would have to change in response to the PT, I had an "Aha!" moment: Dark Dwellers are just better than Greenwarden, AND lets me have a whole Grindy package in the board! It's even a better Necro target because of the menace.

+3 Read the Bones (Side) - The replacement Draw spell ends up in the board. This could be main, but it pairs really well with dark-dwellers so I think having the "transformative" aspect to the deck and also being able to have Languish main makes this correct

SIDENOTE: I do realize that I don't have a spectacular turn 2 play now. I also don't like that our hard removal is all 1 Drops. For these reasons I'm looking at moving the 2 Grasp of Darknesses currently in side to main. I would put the 4th Kommand in the side for when the control package comes in, but I'm not sure on the other card to cut :D

Modern FNM 2-2

Sveniac, 9 years ago

First run with the deck, ended on a 2-2. Fun learning.

Match 1 - Jeskai Control 0-2

Two games filled with mistakes. First one lost to a lack of Worship (which got consistently countered), normal control took over the game. Game 2 was lost to a huge failure to foresee the sideboarding: Opponent brought in Supreme Verdict, and I failed to keep mana up for the regenerate.

Match 2 - Jund Aggro 0-2

First game lost to a timely Maelstrom Pulse. Other than that, deck acted as planned, with Sigarda on the air one turn before his saving draw. Second game was just a bad top deck. After failing to find creatures to hold the early game and a Worship (including with the use of two communes), my opponent simply got his goyfs and oozes running.

Match 3 - Abzan Aggro 2-0

First game was light. After blowing two Siege Rhinos with one Dsphere, his deck lost steam, ended by a Troll Ascetic and an Ojutai with Gavony pumps each turn. Second game was a battle against life gain. Although I was able to maintain an Ojutai on board, his life gain and Lingering Souls simple threw me back on the damage I passed, with my non-flying creatures being stopped by his Voices and Ooze. After a badly planned Damnation I was able to finish him with a second Ojutai, already in hand.

Match 4 - Abzan Flicker 2 - 0

Both games were pretty straight forward. After drawing all four Dspheres on both games and getting Worship online on turn 3, my opponent had no answer and no flying blocker.

Conclusion: I felt that mainboard Eternal Witness didn't help me at all: The best targets for them are those that make me go dead when hitting the graveyard. So, I've experimented with Negate on the mainboard and it seems that proactive protection is better than reactive recovery.

These games also helped me understand better my game plan: It's not aggro at all. Every time I tried to go full aggro from the start, I got destroyed (Jeskai and Jund games). It might seem obvious, but it's hard to resist casting a turn 4 Ojutai.

Overall, this deck has been rewarding: It is able to face the challenges of a diverse meta. It is extremely solid (ignoring top decking too many lands and other inexorable poofs).

The objective now is to rework the sideboard, which seems to need a major overall.

FNM

Played this deck for the first time last week at FNM. Went 4 wins and 1 loss. Game 1: R/G Werewolves: I Won in 2 He wasnt really able to keep any creatures out to hit me while i dealt damage with demonic pact and chandra. Game 2: G/B Elves: I won in 2 Misplayed a few times and kept swinging at Chandra each chance he got while i was just wiping his board and swinging in and hitting him with Demonic Pact. Game 3: Bant Company: Lost in 2 Kept up with the tempo pretty well but couldnt draw into any kill spells. Game 2 sideboarded in my dispels and countered 2 Companys but he was able to beat me down. Game 4: B/W Allies: Won in 2 He got mana screwed game 1. and game 2 wasnt able to keep any creatures on the field. Game 5: U/B Humans: Won in 2 Kept wiping his board and killing all his tokens with Chandra's -X. Demonic Pact got rid of his hand along with Remorseless Punishment and I dropped 2 Demonic Pacts to hit him for 8 my next upkeep for the win.

First Event Win

AndWelcomeToTheJam, 9 years ago

I successfully picked up a win with this deck in a Friday Night EDH event. The turnout was small, so we ended up playing a single round, winner take all, 5-man pod. My opponents were playing Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Karador, Ghost Chieftain (ugh, double reanimator), Vorel of the Hull Clade, and Oloro, Ageless Ascetic. The match breakdown is as follows:

The game started off slow. Most people dropped a mana rock of some sort Turn 1, but I played a Monastery Swiftspear and started pinging for damage. Karador established the next major presence with a Turn 2 Hermit Druid. Since somehow no one had any removal for it, Karador filled up the yard nicely in the next few turns. Meanwhile, Vorel played more rocks, Meren cast Buried Alive to dig for the Spore Frog softlock, and Oloro started digging for combo pieces. I luckily got a Sword of the Animist into play early, to get lands out of the deck.

Karador and Oloro were the biggest threats; Karador's graveyard loomed with fatties like Sheoldred, Whispering One, while Oloro was using Erebos, God of the Dead and Narset Transcendent to draw a lot of cards. I didn't get a whole lot to go with at this time, my only other creatures in play being Tahngarth, Talruum Hero and 2 Goblin tokens from Krenko's Command. Meren eventually dropped and sacrificed Mindslicer, which hurt Oloro the most, but I was reduced to topdecking.

It was around this time that Karador was becoming scary. He reanimated Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger, followed by Sheoldred, Whispering One on his next turn. Fortunately, I only lost a 1/1 token, and Vorel had enough mana to overload Cyclonic Rift. Meren Mindslicered again as well. I had to discard Tempt with Vengeance and Assault Strobe, but it was worth it.

Meren had several utility creatures in his graveyard, but his biggest play was a Grave Titan. Vorel had copied the Grave Titan, but was only working with a Fathom Mage and a bunch of mana. Oloro was still digging, because his combo pieces were dropped by Mindslicer. He was sitting with a Myr Battlesphere. Karador had just hard-casted Vorinclex again, and I was sitting with a Dualcaster Mage in hand. Then I topdecked Fiery Gambit. I cast it, followed by Dualcaster to get 2 Gambits. My first failed the first coin flip.
