Wings of Madness

Artifact - Equipment

Equipped creature gains lifelink and flying.

Whenever you reveal a white spell while ~ is equipped to a creature, you may gain life equal to its mana value. If you don't, that spell costs less to cast this turn.

Equip

"Back when the Flights were going mad, me and a couple of other hunters slew an Angel. I kept the wings we clipped off her as a trophy of the hunt, and as a reminder of what we once had."

Flavor text makes reference to Clip Wings.

Wild, or just make another card for this deck (see above for the commander).

I highly reccomend avoiding expensive cards for first decks- if you are going to spend >$5 on a card, you want to be picking up a card that fits into lots of decks as a format staple (for green, stuff like Birds of Paradise). A lot of cards are expensive because there isn't enough supply for a format (in whiptongue's case, commander), rather than them being the best options. There are diminishing returns on copies of legendary creatures too, and no shortage of inexpensive cards that never quite made the cut into modern that are super fun. Old standard staples are frequently <$0.30

If there are hydras you want to spend money one anyway, pick up one and run tutors like Uncage the Menagerie.

If you get bored, start messing around with synergies; a lot of 5/6/7 drops are playable in a green ramp shell like this- some will perform outstandingly, and others can sit it out with minor cost.

In terms of fighting fliers, Grappling Sundew, Wall of Tanglecord or Traproot Kami offer a delay, there is a lot of cheap spot removal like Aerial Volley, multiplayer options like Clip Wings, sweepers like Corrosive Gale/Hurricane/Skyreaping, options to turn flying into a downside like Bower Passage/Dense Canopy, utility answers like Crushing Canopy and Crushing Vines, 'total shutdown' effects like Elvish Skysweeper, Scattershot Archer or Gravity Well.

Then there are options like a 'fight' subtheme using your own fliers- allowing for answers to more than just flying Foe-Razer Regent is a lot of fun, Frontier Siege is cute, Kraul Harpooner has seen competitive modern play in sideboards.

I really reccomend packing in one answer and a couple of planned search effects- knowing that Uncage the Menagerie can get you a Vastwood Hydra/Overgrown Battlement/Kraul Harpooner makes it decent when you only have a few options, while it encourages a relaxed and varied decklist.

Feed the clan sees great sideboard play for a reason- its a good card when facing lightning bolt effects, but if they have repeatable damage it starts looking lackluster. I'd look at creatures with lifegain stapled on- Gilded Goose will be rotating soon, and so should get cheap and remain somewhat relevant in that neiche, while cards like Healer of the Glade, Pelakka Wurm or Oracle of Nectars do the thing in the meantime.

Finally, the 'I'm optimising a deck' thing- with 24 basic lands you can swap for 2-3 utility lands. There are budget cards that fix major problems without competing for slots; Emergence Zone against counterspells, Labyrinth of Skophos/Mystifying Maze to Fog attackers, small-scale lifegain like Sapseep Forest/Glimmerpost/Radiant Fountain, card advantage like Memorial to Unity, manlands like Treetop Village or threats like Rogue's Passage.

The reason deckbuilding in casual magic is so fun is that there is rarely a 'right' answer- there are about twenty ways to solve any problem, and its more about which one you enjoy more than what exactly you pick. I had a deck which aimed to use Gutter Grime with Brindle Boar and Gristleback for a while and it did great. Look around, don't worry too much about optimising and have fun.

Again, excellent information, Profet93! Can you tell I’m still a bit “green” when it comes to deck building?

FYI – There are 2 brutal flyer decks in my playgroup. Alela, Artful Provocateur and a dragon tribal, piloted by Torbran, Thane of Red Fell. That is why I originally added cards like Predator, Flagship, Clip Wings and Whirlwind.

It's frustrating that they can just fly over everything… but if there are better cards, then let’s add them! My notes are below!

Predator, Flagship - see comment above

Emerald Medallion – I see that you’re saying here. I currently have x8 1, x2 artifact creatures and x3 others, for a total of 13, that wouldn’t benefit from this card. However, I still have 26 creatures (that includes my commander) that can use it. Is that not enough to justify the 2 cost of the artifact?

Burgeoning – You’re probably right, plus it would give me some additional budget to work with.

Prodigious Growth – I originally added this for 4 reasons (prob not good ones!) 1. I could slap it on commander for more dmg. 2. I could slap it on my larger dorks for survivability. 3. I could slap it on one of my creatures with reach to take care of some dragons without dying. 4. Card draw, based on creature toughness. I definitely like bear umbra though! Colossal Majesty – I’ve never played elves before, but it seemed while most of their power is lower than 4, their synergy allows them to build quickly. However, I def like Rishkar's Expertise more!

Clip Wings – I can see how this card can be weak, given that the opponent gets to choose which flyer gets destroyed. And obviously this only works against flyers.

Jungle Basin – Understood. Consider it out of there! Replace it with a forest?

Desert Twister – I totally understand what you’re saying here and agree. I’m just trying to stay under budget!

Tranquility – Understood. What would you replace it with?

Whirlwind – see comment above

Journey of Discovery – Replacement options?

Nature's Spiral - Eternal Witness,

Regrowth is strictly better. - I can see why after reading the text!

Overrun - Roger that!

Gaea's Bounty – I see that it’s like Journey of Discovery. Replacement options?

Rude Awakening/Sylvan Awakening – I don’t think I get the “combo” you’re talking about. Are you just saying that you wouldn’t have to tap the lands for mana, but attack with them because you could use cradle to produce mana?

I dont see any equipment in your list? Yes, some of these suggestions are not budget but I figured you should be aware of them should you wish to make some upgrades for the future.

Predator, Flagship - Too expensive

Emerald Medallion - You have lots of 1 drops which wont benefit from it. Its an ok card, but rarely used in green decks for good reason

Burgeoning - Not enough lands to abuse IMO

Prodigious Growth - Enchantments are 2 for 1. Either they kill it in response to enchanting, or they kill it down the line. If you REALLY want an enchantment, then add Bear Umbra. Even though they can kill in response, it at least has armor so that if it does get enchanted and they try to remove it, you are good for 1 time. Untapping lands is always nice

Colossal Majesty - Replace with any of the card draw I mentioned

Clip Wings - Unless you have lots of flying in the meta, cut. Very weak.

Jungle Basin - Just bad

Desert Twister - Too expensive. If you need permanent removal, add song of the dryads. Although its $, its cheaper and can mess with commanders. I also dont want to make you feel you NEED to change a lot of your deck, so twister can stay if you wish. Removal is always nice, and needed in green.

Tranquility - Limited

Whirlwind - Limited

Journey of Discovery - Better ramp out there

Nature's Spiral - Eternal Witness, Regrowth is strictly better

Overrun - Worse version of overwhelming stampede, redundancy is not needed IMO

Gaea's Bounty - Better ramp out there

Rude Awakening/sylvan awakening is really fun with cradle (out of budget but you have psedu cradle). With rude awakening, you can make all your lands creatures and use psuedo cradle for mana.

I wont comment on the creatures yet as most are fine and want to hear your thoughts on this first
