Ichormoon Gauntlet

Artifact

Planeswalkers you control have "0: Proliferate" and "-12: Take an extra turn after this one."

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, choose a counter on target permanent. Put an additional counter of that kind on that permanent.

Glad you approve, kamarupa!

This was a lot of fun. Some of your suggestions I’ve already considered, but some I overlooked and I think they’d be great additions.

I passed on Contagion Clasp and Thrummingbird during the build—one is too slow and the other too weak/unreliable. I haven’t seen Ichormoon Gauntlet before now, but I didn’t want to incorporate too many costed cards (an earlier draft tried it, leaning heavily into countermagic, but just didn’t work well).

It’s funny you mention Bioshift—one of my favorite builds was a counter heavy deck with Simic Ascendancy as the Wincon where Bioshift is worth its weight in gold. It was the first thing I thought of here, but misremembered the card as being able to move any old counters instead of only +1/+1’s. I also looked at The Ozolith but you’re right, it’s junk here.

As for Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth…that one completely escaped my notice. Initially I got super excited, but on second thought it might not work. It itself being a land would mean if it ever got the Flood Counter then its other text would be redacted. If we could have two of them in play simultaneously then it would fix the problem, except…we can’t. It’s Legendary :/ There are ways around that of course, but that’s too much deck real estate devoted to something that we don’t really need anyway. Great idea though.

Lastly, I considered a Ponza-ish combo deck featuring Choke, Boil etc as primary pieces but took the low road of depravity and went with the mess you see here instead. It’s not a bad idea though, just ‘too good’ for my gutter deck building sensibilities.

I love it. I have a few spells that probably won't really make it better, but you might like them anyway just maybe.

  • Thrummingbird - repeatable proliferation for fairly cheap. Also pings opponents without a flying defense.

  • Choke - this was my original combo piece with Quicksilver Fountain - however, the combo such a stretch, getting to point where opponents are actually imprisoned is all but impossible. Still, it might prove a hindrance to opponents and will completely shut down any mono-blue deck. Of course, it would also shut down a good portion of this deck, too, though the mana dorks def help offset that.

  • Contagion Clasp - another repeatable proliferator

  • Ichormoon Gauntlet - potentially a lot of proliferation with this spell but how you fit any Planeswalkers in I have no idea lol.

I'm not really certain how this works, but I think because Quicksilver Fountain makes a non-island into an Island at the moment the Flood Counter is put on it, a Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth would add 'Forest' to that lands type if played after the fact. I'm really not sure though.

It's really too bad there's not card like Bioshift or Fate Transfer that would work here. Even The Ozolith doesn't get close. :(

Ichormoon Gauntlet perhaps? With enough planeswalkers in play, it can give you infinite turns

I don't know how you feel about infinite combos but you have chain veil, you have Rings of Brighthearth...an easy add here is Basalt Monolith. Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth make infinite colorless mana. Basalt Monolith is just an easy card for this deck because it makes a lot of mana off one rock which can be easily untapped with Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset or Teferi, Temporal Archmage. Speaking of planeswalkers who untap - consider Ral Zarek and Tezzeret the Seeker. Ral and Tezzeret untaps your rocks and can go infinite with chain veil. Tezzeret is also an excellent tutor for those key artifacts when you need them. He can fetch Ichormoon Gauntlet and The Chain Veil the turn he comes into play, both artifacts can be game winning.

jakeelephant006 Thanks for the tips, Its kinda dumb but for fun, as I'm sure you saw there's a good few ways for combos in this deck. A few of them are infinite turn combos, Venser, the Sojourner and Ichormoon Gauntlet work with Teferi, Master of Time to get that combo off. Ichormoon is a key piece for the combo meals tbh but yeah it is slow.

Another not so combo fun synergy is why I have Empyrial Archangel but it involves having Defense of the Heart trigger bringing out Empyrial and Avacyn, Angel of Hope, if you are able to get it working, everything becomes indestructible and prevents you from taking damage. Its hard to deal with and if it isn't dealt with usually pressures my opponents to scoop. These 2 are in the maybe board but It That Betrays Cataclysmic Gearhulk is another pair you can pull with a big board state to steal all your opponents boards.

Semesters end was mainly just to avoid board wipes because my group likes those more then targeted removal. It is a bit crap with the reset of counters though.

Looks like a fun deck! Atraxa is certainly a powerful commander that can go in many directions but I like your choice of going w/ +1/+1 counters mainly. I think more cards like Winding Constrictor and Kami of Whispered Hopes would really make the deck hum. Corpsejack Menace and Conclave Mentor are good adds. I think some more effects to spread around counters more such as Good-Fortune Unicorn and Mikaeus, the Lunarch would help as well.

I think the deck could use some more cards that help w/ consistency and interaction as well. Abzan Charm and Inspiring Call both draw cards in addition to having other flexibility and +1/+1 counter synergy. Fertilid and Incubation Druid both ramp and care about +1/+1 counters. Lastly, Damning Verdict would be a good board wipe addition to clear out opponents' threats while leaving your board mostly intact.

Adding cards is easier than cutting cards. Here's my thoughts on cards that could go to make room for new ones. Venser, the Sojourner doesn't seem to do too much other than being ult-ed. Semester's End is good for saving your board but it resets any amount of counters you've built up back to 1. I don't think there's quite enough planeswalkers or non-creature spells to warrant running Ichormoon Gauntlet. Arcus Acolyte seems a bit slow. Empyrial Archangel doesn't seem to do a lot of work and can be difficult to get counters on because of the shroud.

I would also think about adding a few more basics to help ensure consistency. Good luck with the deck!

MilesHiles - Ah, that Jodah deck is a PRIMER & meant for fun (hence lack of free-counter, fast-mana, etc); you may have missed the Atraxa deck in the "Just For Fun" folder, built when she first came out (a Damia, Sage of Stone deck before that). I understand the confusion. As for T1 ramp, you have 6 for fixing (Diamond, Chrome, Petal, Bird, Hierarch, Halfling & even a Ring/Crypt into Arcane/Fellwar), so I don't see why there's an argument. Getting to a 6cmc "UU" v 4cmc "WU" shouldn't be an issue with pricey landbases & money-rocks (any pseudo-competitive build should, given this price-tag); & Deathrite Shaman is always an option with all the fetches in 4/5 color decks (& even counts towards early Bloom Tender). My Turns Example contains the cards needed for fastest T4, just as your combo explanation does (I too just provided a quicky, but definitely not the only way with this setup, just more optimized card slots).

Big Teferi has his Nagging Thoughts, but I'd much rather Anticipate the interaction around me with UW Teferi, by digging deeper, keeping an amazing "pop", all while having a "+" as the Combo option. As for Tezzeret the Seeker, he has the same "must have Artifacts" clause as Artifice Master, and they both "make" their condition. Tutoring for whatever the situation calls for can be better utility all round (especially with your Art-count, Sensei's Divining Top for dig, Ensnaring Bridge is clutch & Ichormoon Gauntlet can be "GG"); while keeping the infinite option open. Admittedly, The Peregrine Dynamo is situationally better than Rings, and a great way to re-use middle-minuses... lets face it, going straight for Ults doesn't always work out ;) (and you're faced with that "surviving turn cycle" mess you want to avoid). Still, if dodging interaction to go for Ults is your thing, power to you!

There may be answers though, especially when playing at this power level (Stax, free-counters, expensive ramp, infinites, etc; at least its NOT another Stax/Thoracle build =) #LoveTheCreativity). Props to JtMS and the versatile Walkers, so valued in multiple formats for a "swiss army" approach instead of juicy/bait Ults. We do have a diverse playgroup here in the Seattle area; sorry that you had a rough time with these suggestions (all I was getting at), maybe give them another chance sometime! Best of luck

MilesHiles - Digging further is optimizing those resources you have (cause lets face it, we don't always have Godhands ;)). I used to do that combo back when Chain/Teferi was prominent, so I can understand the misunderstanding in the way things have evolved here. I'll break down the simplicity in what I mentioned for you though: T1 - Ramp T2 - Bloom Tender (+another ramp if able) T3 - Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset, tap Tender (+leftover mana from early ramp) for The Chain Veil, use Teferi +1 = infinite Life & if you managed to slip in a Black permanent, Mana too. This is more "optimized", since his "+1" does the work (instead of "-1"), leaving you able to play that Ugin (or another other colorless, like a Chromatic Orrery) ftw.

A variant with Tezzeret the Seeker also requires fewer CMC/Cards for the infinite Veil-win and uses pieces that are synergetic with the build regardless of what's going on (Tezz grabs those amazing artifacts; doubling Walker activation is great, especially "GG" from 2x "pops"). The Peregrine Dynamo/Rings of Brighthearth & Gilded Lotus or the Orrery mentioned, nets Infinite Mana/Activations, while also grabbing all artifacts from your deck (digging to those key Walkers). Ex: T1 - Ramp; T2 - Peregrine Dynamo; T3 - Gilded + any ramp; T4 - Tezz & Veil, +1 & use PD to double it (activate Veil after the 1st resolution), swap back & forth for the untaps, grab all artifacts from deck, Turns with Ichormoon Gauntlet or any Walker you dig to with Top while shuffling repeatedly off Tezz = Fin. I understand if you're partial to Big Teferi, many of us were... I'm just illustrating that its easier these days & slots are more optimized/versatile. =D
