I Wanna Make Something

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 6, 2017, 7:57 p.m. by MoonTurtle7

I'm still relatively new to Commander, and Magic in general for that matter. I've made a fiew decks at this point but only 3 commander decks.

My first was General Tazri that is a solid deck that is oddly cursed. So I refuse to upgrade it.

Ally Commander Rainbow Build (MoonTurtle)

Second, an Olivia, Mobilized for War deck I cobbled together for shits and giggles. it really hasn't grabbed me, just certain cards in it.

Olivia, Mobilized From my Box

Third, a Korlash, Heir to Blackblade deck that I love, but have gotten to a cross roads on how to upgrade it. So I'm sitting on a wall for now.

Korlash, Heir to the Castle in the Swamp

My main point here is I'm looking for something new and fun. As much as I love Korlash, he gets a little repetitive. And the Allies seem to think I'm an Eldrazi. And Olivia Just isn't for me, tho some of the cards I have in there are fun. I keep looking up commanders on EDHREC, But I cant make up my mind.

My LGS has a lot of players with boardwipes and Super competitive attitudes (And for some reason I always get matched with them). My friends aren't very competitive but we work on opposite shifts. So I want to be pointed towards something strong relatively cheap and that is fun more than once or twice.

Any help that you guys could give would be Awesome! Thanks in advance!

Sorry I accidentally flooded the page I was getting an error message from tappedout saying the name for my post already existed so I kept changing the name so I could get it to work.

Well, what do you consider fun?

I think a fun EDH deck is based around a commander you enjoy, but also allows you to run cards you like to see in your deck.

My opinion of sadistic, yet twisted fun (you play Rakdos, you understand) is Vial Smasher the Fierce and Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist teaming up to cast instants on other player's turns and watch everyone maddeningly draw their whole deck.

Well That's the thing. I find a lot of things fun. I just don't know many win-cons outside of the obvious. So when I see someone like Azami, Lady of Scrolls I think "oh blue would be cool and different, but how do I win?" I look at Roon of the Hidden Realm and only really see the ETB, not the combos or the real gameplan.

My point being I like 95% of all gameplans. I just might need a push towards how to really pilot it.

So, you are looking for a wincon outside of the 21 commander damage or 40 life totals?

What colors do you want to play? What's your favorite card type? Do you have a budget? Are you looking just to perform well at your LGS?

Board wipes can be a pain but an edh deck that controls them or makes something else their target of choice that will help. I've made a lot of edh decks but you might want to look into either my Nekusar, the Mindrazor, Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer, or my Mogis, God of Slaughter. Now you don't have to make a direct copy but in my opinion those 3 can make decent competitive edh deck commanders.

-I'm looking for it to preform well.-The budget is 100$ or so (can go to 200$ if it really entices me. I will upgrade as I go, Especially if I like it)-Colors are more or less irrelevant to me. -Card type? Uhhh haven't it given it much thought. Creatures? -My friends have honor rule for land destruction.

Generally speaking, Simic has some really good cards in it's colors. Its usually pretty easy to build around and cheap. It's wins can range from stompy and smashy to 100 counters on Helix Pinnacle.

You will have access to counters to stop wipes, and green also has some solid indestructible options.

Some good examples are:

Edric, Spymaster of Trest: The "nonverbal politics" general.

Kruphix, God of Horizons: Also known as the god of mana and Helix Pinnacles.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary: The creature-based combo tutor.

Kaseto, Orochi Archmage: Lord of the Unblockables.

and once they branch out into other colors, they get neat stuff too.

I am not a Simic player, but the color combo offers lots of possibilities, especially with creatures.

Leaning towards simic, Ezuri, Claw of Progress is a great time working lots of different creatures into one huge army.

Also with expierience counters, Meren of Clan Nel Toth is a very fun reanimator deck: both these can be built for about $100 into decks that do well and upgraded over time.

Working more towards "I'm a jerk" is Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon. A bit more expensive but a great time if you just want to crush your opponents quickly with infect

Ever considered Goblin tribal? The deck is easily 100 dollars or less and once you get the essential red goblins you can go any guild almost(reds kinda required) and be successful. Occasionally it is competitive, I've killed tables on turn 5 by just having a Goblin Lackey and Goblin Matron in hand. You can also combo out, winning with straight aggro or Purphoros. Just food for thought, since buying my goblins I've never regretted the investment and I've made tons of deck combinations.

I've been dying to see a good Oona, Queen of the Fae EDH deck.

You could look at upgrading one of your decks into something different if you wanted. For example, you could add a Food Chain package to Tazri and then you'd have a combo deck. So when you play competitive people, you can combo out but when you play friends you can go the beats route.

GearNoir I've never seen a good Oona deck either.

GoldenDiggle Kruphix, Edric and Kaseto look pretty awesome, The counters would help a lot for most of the wipes.

Unlife I've considered Ezuri in the past, but I'm fairly certain he draws a lot of attention, tho the colors are worth the looksee. Meren does look cool, but last time I looked into her my LGS was sold out. (she's popular for obvious reasons) Finally Skittles is awesome and those jerks probly do deserve Infect, But I'd only be able to play it sometimes. Also I feel him and Korlash would overlap a bit.

dlamars My friends have a strange hatred for goblins, so I haven't really looked into them too much. I know Krenko but I feel it will garner me a lot of attention.

One of my favorite decks that I've built recently is Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

As long as she is in play; every Counterspell played on an opponent's turn will at minimum give you a free draw-card, if not a free spell. It was a kruphix deck bent on getting as many eldrazi on the table as possible, but I've had more fun with her pseudo-cascade ability and kept her as the commander

is a really easy color combo that has oodles of options for wincons. It also has some of the best draw card abilities to date

is really hard, in my opinion. I ran Olivia Voldaren for a long time and it was a fun deck, but couldnt keep the pace with the green or blue decks. Black has a lot of tutors and red has a lot of looting, but it's still a challenge when up against competitive decks

Both the Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury precons are pretty powerful out of the box and can be upgraded to be tier 2-3 generals with very little money. They're also good at selectively punishing high level players if you so chose to make them.

The problem with Meren l, as fun and great as it can be, is that there are far too many cheap graveyard hate options.

joshuaizac says... #16

if there are too many boardwipes and a semi-competitive meta...you should probably rely less on creatures...which leads to combo....or really gross stax/tax or control strategies....

Shattergang Brothers stax ?

Thraximundar control ?

Narset, Enlightened Master combo ?

these are just examples...but if aggro doesn't work for your meta....these are the kind of lines you should be thinking about imo

February 7, 2017 1:29 p.m.

MoonTurtle7 says... #17

Yeah the boardwipes mean lots of graveyard hate. My Korlash deck only skirts by cause it's not a main theme. So it's not a big target.

February 7, 2017 1:30 p.m.

MoonTurtle7 says... #18

But Doesn't Stax draw literally all the attention? Also Thraximundar is a control commander? I would have thought he was a Voltron or sub-Voltron/Zombie commander.

Razulghul says... #19

Just to follow up: I get that most people hate on Krenko, Mob Boss or Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker decks, they are capable of going off on a moments notice. The others such as Wort, Boggart Auntie, Wort, the Raidmother and even Grenzo, Havoc Raiser are pretty fun to play with and against.

There's also Purphoros, God of the Forge or Iroas, God of Victory as more generic commanders.

I just figured I'd throw it out there, I like how easy the tribe fits into so many strategies/decks but totally understand if your friends don't like playing them.

My favorite new commander deck is Yahenni, Undying Partisan. He is super strong and when played with lots (and I mean LOTS) of board wipes he is extremely effective. Here is one example: (NOTE THIS IS NOT MY DECK. JUST A EXAMPLE TO GIVE AN IDEA ON HOW TO PLAY YAHENNI)The Hungry, Hungry Aetherborn: Yahenni EDH

I haven't made this deck myself, but my most recent commander crush is Sapling of Colfenor, mostly because I'm a sucker for treefolk tribal, but voltron is an option too if that interests you more. Also Doran, the Siege Tower is another interesting pick, but the 3rd color will stretch your budget and he has no wrath protection, so I'd suggest keeping it two color or mono.

February 7, 2017 9:48 p.m.

MoonTurtle7 says... #22

I Like Voltron, but I do get bored of playing it too much, especially the fact that the only thing that can keep up is my korlash deck. Tho the indestructibility is awesome, Sapling and others much like it will probly feel same-y for obvious reasons. I will take a look and see if I can shake it up maybe. Doran Peaks my interest, tho I'm not entirely sure it won't be susceptible to the wipes every 2-3 turns

I do have a question tho, how does Mizzix Win? I've only been handed the word Combos. Like WHAT COMBO?!? No one ever elaborates.

February 8, 2017 12:41 a.m.

enpc says... #24

Typically with Mizzix, you generate infinite mana and then dump it into a huge Comet Storm or Banefire. That of build an enormous storm count and use Grapeshot/Aetherflux Reservoir.

February 8, 2017 4:31 a.m.

GoldenDiggle says... #25

I have a friend who uses Mizzix as burn, draw, extra turns, planeswalkers, and copy spells.

The game ends when he takes a few turns to ult a walker. Occasionally burn works, but he doesn't always need it.
