The name comes from the quote on Crackling Doom. It used to be called "Doom and Dash", but with no creatures left with Dash, it doesn't seem right anymore.

This deck uses early pressure from first strike and double strike Warriors, burn spells (Crackling Doom, Lightning Strike and Kolaghan's Command ) and retrieving your dead creatures (Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Kolaghan's Command to force the opponent in a defensive stance and finish him with Warriors, burn or Butcher of the Horde .

During testing at FNM, I found that this deck is aggressive enough to punish slow strategies and, thanks to Outpost Siege , it also has enough gas to win grueling matches.

The Cards

  • Crackling Doom: An edict that burns the player's face and forces him to sacrifice his strongest creature (hopefully). The main reason to play Mardu.

  • Butcher of the Horde and Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury as finishers. Strong, semi-hasty flyers striking for 5. The Butcher is the second best reson to play Mardu: it's above the curve and can gain you life if you need it to. It's not a Siege Rhino, but it dodges Roast. Works better with sacrifice outlets, which this deck now lacks, but it's a must-answer threats at 4 CMC.

Koaghan is basically a recurring Chief of the Edge riding a Lava Axe . It can also block Thunderbreak Regent all day if you need it to.

Went 2-2 last friday and I'm officially done with this deck. Warriors is a good budget concept, but my wins were always too close for comfort. The Theros board wipes (Drown in Sorrow and Anger of the Gods) are basically hard counters for this deck. When they rotate out, maybe Warriors will become more competitive. Until then, I'll be running a Mardu burn or Mardu dragon deck (haven't decided yet).

Anyway:

  • 0-2 against blue/white dragon-less control. Elspeth, Sun's Champion got me first game, after a Perilous Vault. I managed to beat her to a dashed Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury, but it was too little, too late. Ojutai's Command does a lot of work against aggressive strategies and Banishing Light meant I could never bring back my creatures.

  • 0-2 against.... Honestly can't remember, except that I got destroyed.

  • 2-1 against Black/White Warriors. Yeah, the near-mirror match. I won the third game due to drawing all 4 of my Crackling Doom.

  • 2-0 against Red-Deck Wins. A new player using a borrowed deck. He was still struggling with the concept of a "combat trick", playing his Titan's Strength pre-combat.
