Sheltering Ancient Discussion

dzapf2008 on Scavengers

I was wondering why you have a 70 card deck? Are you planning on reducing the number down to 60 since this is a modern deck? Sheltering Ancient doesn't look like it fits with your deck theme. That could be the place to start reducing your cards down. I have a lot of the same cards, but I made mine a B/G Dredge deck. You can check it out here: Necrotic Splinterfright. Overall I really like the deck!

Deathrite Shaman isn't legal in Modern, and it's also not really part of the win condition here, you should consider cards like Sheltering Ancient which for 2 mana can give you 5 counters with Varolz's scavenge ability. Also, consider Infect as a win-con. Phyrexian Crusader gives you protection from two of the most packed removal colors, and with 13 +1/+1 counters he can swing against those decks and win in one hit. Just a thought, good luck!

Sheltering Ancient, Phyrexian Dreadnought and Phyrexian Soulgorger are additional kickstarters for selvala.

May be a bit pricy but definitly speeds up the whole thing even more

Solemn Shelter (Abzan)

Solemn Shelter

These are trying to take advantage of the power of Sheltering Ancient while avoiding the huge drawback by playing it with Solemnity. These lists are more a starting place so they aren't very tuned at this point.

I am also not sure if I prefer GW or Junk, hence the post, so narrowing that down will help to tune one or the other. I am leaning towards the Abzan list since it kind of plays more like a Death Shadow deck, disrupt the opponent and then drop a big threat to beat down with, where the GW list is more an aggro gw value town list.

Any help is appreciated!

Have you thought about changing out Sheltering Ancient 4 Lupine Prototype

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys.

I like the Show and Tell and Concordant Crossroads ideas DrkNinja, although giving all creatures haste is a little worrying I must say. I'll have to test it out. Luckily (due to its price) I feel the same way about Eureka as I do Hypergenesis or the Tempting Wurm that NyanNijet suggested . They all push the game forward too fast, even for this deck and, considering all the card draw I'm giving out, if one player has an Reliquary Tower effect and the others don't, things could get ugly.

I've thought about including Hunted Wumpus in the deck, NyanNijet, but when you get up into the 6/6 creature range, people start taking notice. I even considered not putting the 5/5 Sheltering Ancient in the deck for this reason, but the cumulative upkeep is just so sweet on that card I had to include it.

odd mechanics in green:

Bellowing Tanglewurm, Beacon Behemoth, Avoid Fate, Cream of the Crop, City of Solitude, Brooding Saurian, Heartwood Storyteller, Gurzigost, Genju of the Cedars, Gaea's Liege, Freyalise's Winds, Fertile Imagination, Eyes of the Wisent, Engulfing Slagwurm, Elven Warhounds, Elephant Grass, Hermit of the Natterknolls  Flip, Hidden Gibbons (and the other hidden creatures / enchantments), Dosan the Falling Leaf, Holistic Wisdom, Hornet Sting, Hunted Troll, Ichneumon Druid, Kashi-Tribe Reaver (and the rest of kashi-tri, if only for the lockdown mechanic), Lifeforce, Lignify, Lost in the Woods, Mammoth Harness, Meandering Towershell, Midsummer Revel, Mindbender Spores, Mortal Wound, Multani, Maro-Sorcerer, Nacatl War-Pride, Nature's Wrath, Night Soil (okay, this one is odd - because the colon is after the removal of creatures, it happens faster than players can respond or trigger to - it happens at the "cost" step of activating the ability), Noxious Revival, Panglacial Wurm, Permeating Mass, Planeswalker's Favor, Protean Hydra, Quirion Druid, Recycle, Revelation, Riftsweeper, Rite of Passage, Root Maze, Rootrunner, Rust, Scarwood Bandits, Sprouting Phytohydra, Sporogenesis, Spike Tiller, Sheltering Ancient, Selvala's Charge, Sekki, Seasons' Guide, Wave of Vitriol, Wonderlust, Vernal Equinox, Unyaro Bees, Typhoon, Tropical Storm, Tornado, Tempting Wurm, Tempting Licid, Symbiotic Deployment, Superior Numbers, Stunted Growth, Wild Mammoth, Wolfcaller's Howl, Worldspine Wurm, Xantid Swarm, and Yavimaya Dryad

For what it's worth, Verdurous Gearhulk can be an 8/8 with trample, costs one less mana and is more versatile than either of those. But anyway...

I like cumulative upkeep, if only because it appears on many of my favorite cards ever. I still want to make not-too-terrible decks centered around Jotun Grunt, Vexing Sphinx and Braid of Fire one day, and Sheltering Ancient is the best card in my favorite deck (Uh, are you sure that's a 5 and not a 2...?). You guys wouldn't believe how many times I've had someone use sorcery-speed removal on my Ancient with no creatures on their side of the board, just because they didn't realize it'd die on my next upkeep anyway.
