Hoard-Smelter Dragon Discussion

5dollarMTG on $5 Land Destruction

You're right SignoreVitello. I always play the deck with at least two Hoard-Smelter Dragon and four Splinter but couldn't get it down to $5 the other night. It looks like a few prices have dropped, however, so I can substitute in another Dragon for a Tin Street Hooligan and still hit my target. Thanks.

54 out of 100 foils, over half way there! People really shouldn't do this... lol.

I have some additional changes I'm thinking about too.

Amaranthine Wall has literally never come up in any game. I easily have over a hundred games with this deck... Indestructible just gets powered out by flicker unless I can make everything I have indestructible. Not sure what to replace it with...

Search for Azcanta  Flip is a nice early drop to start getting the ball rolling but just feels underwhelming overall. Looking at Stitcher Geralf as a possible replacement.

Hoard-Smelter Dragon is one I am much more on the fence about but I'm thinking Viashino Heretic would be better for this deck. Kind of a toss up between the two... one takes more mana but the other requires tapping.

Super would recommend Utvara Hellkite, it was reprinted and is super op!

Lathliss, Dragon Queen also is a new dragon that is very synergistic with dragons, Atarka, World Render gives the team double strike, Bladewing the Risen reanimates them and lets you pump all of them if you put in mana, Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury gives you all of them a ton of damage, Savage Ventmaw lets you get out more dragons too!

Scourge of Valkas is a great dragon if you can cast it for triple red, giving you removal and damage for days! Broodmate Dragon is fine, Steel Hellkite is good removal, Thunderbreak Regent is a nice addition too! Hoard-Smelter Dragon, Bogardan Hellkite, Deathbringer Regent, and Tyrant's Familiar are also good removal in dragon form.

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher gives you a field for blockage, Dragon Mage draws you more dragons, and Scourge of Kher Ridges is a board wipe on repeat too.

Consider Fierce Empath, Crux of Fate, Dragon's Hoard, and Dragon Tempest too!

Hellkite Tyrant is nice to use, but I already run Hoard-Smelter Dragon, which has a similar role in this deck. It would be more of a choice between stealing key artifacts or raw damage on a large, artifact-removing body (Hellkite Tyrant doesn't actually destroy the artifact but it takes it from its owner). I would rather run Hoard-Smelter for its reliability, but Hellkite Tyrant is also strong for a more political approach.

It’s no bother at all - happy to help!

I do not think you need any of those creatures. Indulgent Tormentor gives your opponent three options, allowing them multiple ways to pick whatever will work best for them. Resolute Archangel will often not make that big of a difference in games. Hoard-Smelter Dragon is nice if you have Artifact-heavy opponents, but most of the time you’d rather just use Hellkite Tyrant. I gave your list another look - Chancellor of the Annex is a fairly solid card if you’re looking for something new.

I think your Price of Glory substitution makes sense.

I don’t think I would cut Diabolic Tutor. Tutors are a very important part of EDH, as they allow you to find that one copy of the card you desperately need. Diabolic Tutor is very marginal, as far as tutors go, but it’s what you get for budget builds.

cdkime hello its me again to bother you with more questions, I have a few more cuts for you to consider Mordant Dragon for either Indulgent Tormentor or Resolute Archangel or Hoard-Smelter Dragon

next is Syphon Mind for Price of Glory

Lastly is Diabolic Tutor or Insurrection

Hmmm... Daretti’s Dragons. When I first saw this name, I didn’t think the deck would work very well, considering that most dragons do not work with artifacts. However, this actually seems like a pretty strong deck, with the artifacts doing all the cool stuff and the dragons coming in late game for lots of damage. Now, I don’t particularly like to play artifacts. I’m sure that many people do, but I just prefer creatures and spells. However, I have experience with dragons, and should be able to give you some good suggestions for that bit of the deck. I would guess that you probably want dragons that interact with artifacts, so here’s what I have for you:

Dragons that do artifact stuff: Covetous Dragon

Freejam Regent

Furnace Dragon

Hoard-Smelter Dragon

Moltensteel Dragon

Other cool dragons you could use:

Scourge of the Throne

Furyborn Hellkite

Dragon Mage

Bogardan Hellkite

Ancient Hellkite

And some more artifact dragons:

Henge Guardian

Teeka's Dragon

Clockwork Dragon

Lotus Guardian

Now, you might use a or a f these, or you might use none of them. I am just giving ideas that you COULD use. So try them out if you want, keep experimenting. Hope this helps! Good luck!
