Ulrich offers nothing better than what Xenagos, God of Revels and Ruric Thar, the Unbowed do as Commanders, so while someone could make a RG deck heavily featuring Werewolves with Ulrich, I don't see it actually being all that powerful in Commander. Xenagos potentially gives a way bigger buff effect, and a fight effect every so often is really just so-so compared to damaging your opponents for casting noncreature spells (plus Ruric has the same body + vigilance and reach).
June 21, 2016 5:44 a.m.
I agree. I still say that Xenagos or Ruric makes for a better commander as well. But Ulrich is still good enough to be part of the 99.
June 22, 2016 8:16 a.m.
I'll stick him in the 99 because creature type but he's a big disappointment as a legendary werewolf commander.
Here's to hoping Tolovar gets a card too and we get a 2nd legendary werewolf who actually helps support the tribe this time!

What Wolf/Werewolf creatures are you guys running? I definitely want a creature-based deck, but many of the options are underwhelming. This is what I have now: (still brewing the deck, Ulrich will probably be the commander)
Afflicted Deserter

Birds of Paradise
Breakneck Rider

Chameleon Colossus
Cult of the Waxing Moon
Daybreak Ranger

Duskwatch Recruiter

Geier Reach Bandit

Huntmaster of the Fells

Scourge Wolf
Silverfur Partisan
Solemn Simulacrum
Taurean Mauler
Ulvenwald Tracker
Witchstalker
Wolf of Devil's Breach
Wolfir Silverheart

Zhur-Taa Druid
Am I missing any "must-have" creatures for this deck? I'd really like to up the count.
June 23, 2016 2:43 p.m.
Gorgosaurusrex, I at least would recommend Kessig Cagebreakers and Pathbreaker Ibex. The first card makes recovering from a board wipe a breeze while the second rewards you for doing what you wanted to do in the first place: attack with a bunch of creatures.
June 23, 2016 2:55 p.m.
Gorgosaurusrex Adaptive Automaton would probably be good in there. Not a creature, but Obelisk of Urd could certainly help you out a bit. Also, I've found that with werewolves, creatures with activated mana-sink abilities are nice as they allow you to do stuff on your turn without actually casting spells. Let me know when you get a deck together. I'd love to take a look and compare my fledgling werewolf deck with yours.

Ulrich's Werewolves
Commander / EDH*
34 VIEWS
I'm actually building this list for a friend (I have plenty of decks already) and he's asked me to keep it pretty cheap so it's a budget build. It's not as powerful as the decks I normally brew but it should be okay in 3-4 player games.
June 24, 2016 12:34 p.m.
Ulrich is so disappointing. I want to cry.
Needless to say, I have a lot of trade credits I was saving to make a Werewolf EDH deck, and now I'm considering scrapping the whole thing. The innate mechanic of werewolves is severely limiting in a multiplayer environment, and if your commander doesn't attempt to mitigate this downside, the odds are massively stacked against you.
I consider this less of a problem with Ulrich, but more with the tribe as a whole. I never expected to be hyper-competitive running heavy tribal, but I also know that I am going to be shut out if I try to make this work in my playgroup.
June 24, 2016 4:05 p.m.
I think the whole problem with the flip mechanic could have been avoided altogether if they had used the words "non-creature spell" rather than "spell".

I too am severely dissapointed in Ulrich, here's hoping Tovolar also shows up at legendary, if not in EMN then in the return to return to Innistrad in a few years time.
June 25, 2016 5:08 a.m.
Does anyone have a good Jund Werewolf deck list I can look at? I am trying to build two versions, one Jund and one Gruul to see which I like more, and I could use a few ideas on how I might go about it.

@TheACTR plz tel me you're running Greater Werewolf and Treacherous Werewolf for flavour :D
June 26, 2016 10:06 p.m.
DERPLINGSUPREME Of course I am. And Lesser Werewolf as well.
June 27, 2016 12:46 p.m.
So, it isn't a werewolf, but Assembled Alphas is still a good Wolf card. Like a better Kessig Forgemaster Flip with a bigger body.

June 28, 2016 2:19 p.m. Edited.
So some new cards have been spoiled, three werewolves that are pay to transform but have no way to transform back. No legends though. Still, deciding when to make your creatures more powerful and them not having a condition that renerfs them is nice. And it gives you something to do with your mana on turns you want to not play any spells.
June 29, 2016 4:33 p.m.
Here are those new werewolves
HERE THEY ARE! Show
They transform through an activated ability, and don't transform back. Pointing out the synergy with Vildin-Pack Alpha Flip
June 29, 2016 4:45 p.m.
Yes! And all of them are playable. Plus, these are only common and uncommon so we can look forward to more. Plus as Crayfish pointed out, they have good synergy with Vilidin and Moonmist.
June 29, 2016 6:27 p.m.
Ugh...I really don't like those Eldrazi werewolves from a flavor standpoint. That alone makes me hesitant to run them. And besides, I chose to run Ulrich anyway. Why? Because it makes the most sense to me.
Anyway, I should mention that Ulrich is the only werewolf with the Sun/Moon symbols on the card in EMN. Linky.
Oh, and a shameless plug for my Ulrich deck as well. Rise of the Full Moon.
June 29, 2016 8:11 p.m.
TheACTR I suggest you look at the Weredrazi and Moonmist again, yes they have the Wolf Fog synergy but that's it Moonmist only transforms Humans, so while it would transform Grizzled Angler for example it won't do anything to the Weredrazi, also Immerwolf is horrible with them and means you can't transform them at all while it is out.
June 30, 2016 5:59 a.m.
Thanks for that JonRock I had misread that. And yes Immerwolf does throw a wrench in your transforming needs for the new werewolves as well.
June 30, 2016 12:58 p.m.
I don't really dig them flavor-wise. Then again, I also find Brisela pretty disturbing.
June 30, 2016 4:12 p.m.
I was on the fence at fist about everything being twisted into Eldrazi versions of themselves but I have decided that I liked it. It is also still really early in the spoilers too though, aND we have only gotten a mythic, an uncommon, and two commons. Plus a couple of decent looking wolves. So I am reserving my final opinion until I see all of what EMN has to offer.
June 30, 2016 4:36 p.m.
New card, werewolf fans. Spirit of the Wolf is a really good 3CMC card. I would post the picture but don't know how.
July 4, 2016 12:07 p.m.
I'm having a hard time evaluating that new wolf for EDH. Any thoughts?
July 4, 2016 12:12 p.m.
Well aside from the fact that it is a 3/3 with Flash for 3 mana, it can really help as a combat trick (purely defensive one of course) or it can help against removal based upon damage. Or if for whatever reason you are running Assault Formation...
July 4, 2016 1:20 p.m.
Hey, I found a card in the binders at my LGS that seemed like a good manasink at first glance and I was wondering if any of you with a full deck built already had tested it yet. Riptide Replicator
July 4, 2016 2:35 p.m.
I think I would use Ulrich as my commander...if only for the thematic value. If there was an easy way to blink him in green/red, he would certainly be better. Perhaps with 'champion' shenanigans....?
July 5, 2016 7:10 a.m.
MTG Salvation has just spoiled a smathering of cards for those interested. There is a new Instant I think everyone here would be interested in. Also, a few new wolves/werewolves.
July 8, 2016 12:54 p.m.
The whole set is spoiled, and only one new support card for traditional werewolves, but it's a good one. Not Moonmist good, but good nonetheless.
July 8, 2016 1:05 p.m.
So the whole set is spoiled now? Well I am a little sad we didn't get a little more support for wolves/werewolves other than a couple of decent creatures and Waxing Moon. I wish we could have had maybe one more card at even half the power level that some of the stuff Zombie players got. Still, we have enough to supplement what our decks are already capable of so I am happy.
July 8, 2016 1:18 p.m.
TheACTR: Including a legendary Werewolf.
But, yeah, even the Were-drazi felt lacking. I wasn't amazed by any of them. Waxing Moon, though, is something I'm going to use. I don't know what to remove though.
July 8, 2016 1:59 p.m.
Waxing Moon is another Instant that could be combined with Isochron Scepter for repeated transformation effects. The problem is, those sorts of combos are too janky considering R/G has no way to tutor Instants without expensive cards such as Ring of Three Wishes.
I've settled on making an Ulrich deck anyways, but keeping it extremely cheap and tribal-focused. Really, I just want to collect these cards, even if the deck is ineffective. I'm not sure if I want to include the Eldrazi Werewolves though. With my remaining money, I need to decide on another commander to build around...
July 8, 2016 2:09 p.m.
I'm going to try out the Were-drazi at some point, despite my dislike for them. At least I can form a "sideboard" with all of them and 3 other werewolves I removed (Including for Waxing Moon).
July 8, 2016 6:06 p.m.
I am likewise going to be running Isochron Scepter in my deck for all of the "Moon" instants. On top of that, I will be sticking to Xenagos for my commander. I like Ulrich, but I feel he is better suited in the deck than at its command. I actually love the new werewolves and how well they work in conjunction with the older ones so I will be running a few in my deck, about 4 I think. I will post a deck list soon if anyone is interested.

Our New legendary kind of bites as a commander but i still think hes a great card, plus the new emerge style monsters and wolves love for trample im trying a new Wolf"ish" commander.I love the wolves and determined to make them work even if its not a full dedicated tribal
July 14, 2016 1:52 p.m.
My opinion about the Were-drazi softened to the point where I might consider giving them a shot in my deck even though they don't really fit the Werewolf flavour theme I'm going for at all(I'm trying to go full flavour and am playing even Call of the Full Moon). I think the card I'm most excites for in EMN for this deck is probably Savage Alliance, I like the flavour of it, I like the escalate mechanic but mostly I want to surprise give someone else trample at some point. I also think Waxing Moon might be better than my first reaction at least in EDH, looking through my deck I actually don't have a ton of trample granting stuff, so even though it's only for one turn a little redundancy is great, especially with how heavy on the creature type buffing I am.

IrateWarrior Congrats on your victories. Those are some pretty nasty decks to go against. I have been fine tuning my deck as well and haven't really tested it since I have switched my commander over from Ruric Thar, the Unbowed to Xenagos, God of Revels. I will definitely give your deck a look.

Thanks :) link yours and ill check it out to!
i love Ruric Thar, the Unbowed so i added him into the actual deck because Xenagos, God of Revels just puts in way to much work with all the trample.
a great combo i was using was Breaker of Armies and Xenagos, God of Revels with Primal Rage and Flameshadow Conjuring... against any deck that relies on tokens to soak up damage steps on their heads haha, attacked 8 1/1 tokens with a 20/18 and 10/8 with trample

I love how Mark Rosewater makes Ulrich sound like some sort of gift from the heavens that is supposed to appease the fans. Ulrich's only real redeeming quality in EDH is that he is both legendary, and a werewolf. Still, it's interesting to read that the card was almost cut completely from the set.

I see a lot of people that have a problem with Ulrich, and while I understand that we've all wanted a legendary werewolf for years and this is what we get, he isn't terrible. I mean, what'd you expect, a commander that takes control of all werewolves when he enters or flips back to human, and upon flipping to a werewolf he wipes the opponent's boardstate? Think in terms of the set. It's Innistrad, they came back to it, we just got a new werewolf planeswalker in Arlinn Kord, and BOOM Emrakul, arguably stronger than the other two Eldrazi titans combined, is messing up the plane. You can't have a legendary werewolf that's more powerful gameplay-wise than the strongest Eldrazi titan that was the "big surprise" for this set (however, I did call her going to Innistrad to a couple of friends after the fourth or fifth lore story, but I digress). They did the best they could with the given situation. Of course, they could have made the human flip ability +4/+4 to all creatures until end of turn, not just a target creature, but it makes Ulrich balanced.
Anyway, this ma commander I'm hoping to make, got most of the cards already, just need a few from the older set.

I would have liked to see his CMC at 4, rather than 5. Werewolf EDH already faces so many hurdles in terms of trying to make it playable and on-flavor. I like how he has things that create effects on both switches, a la Huntmaster of the Fells Flip. Would have been nice to have him help out in some way with making your werewolves not flip back or something though. Still, cool-looking card that I wouldn't mind getting my hands on.
