“Oppose us and die a heretic. Join us and be blessed with immortality.” –Vito Quijano de Pasamonte, Church of Dusk Priest

Conquers of the Golden City:

When the sun of Ixalan dips just below the horizon, all the land its light touches becomes awash in radiant golden hues. As dusk descends, immortal conquistadors clad in golden armor come ashore on foreboding caravels. This campaign to Ixalan is the latest in an endless string of bloodthirsty voyages to be sponsored by their queen, who acts in conjunction with the divine authority of the Church of Dusk. The Legion of Dusk has landed, and they seek the blood of the impure to grant themselves eternal salvation and power. With the righteous might of their armies, the golden city will be theirs. And it will run red with blood.

Clavileño, First of the Blessed is a heretic whose religious fanaticism led him on a holy crusade in search of his true god: a bat demon said to be the adversary of the very sun itself and ancient progenitor of all vampires. His pilgrimage took him far from the Legion’s fog-shrouded coastal outposts and down into the dark depths of Ixalan’s core where he at last came face-to-face with his deity. Anointed by Clavileño, the Legion’s most devout conquistadors stand ready to follow him through battle and bloodshed to spread the infernal message of their living god.

Deck Strategies:

1. Your merciless vampire conquistadors converge on the field as a massive army.

Foot soldiers like Vicious Conquistador, Martyr of Dusk, and Duskborne Skymarcher may not be individually strong but they are cheap enough to swarm the field early and en-masse. Cards like Queen's Commission and Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle also supply you steadily with vampire tokens. Attack often and early on to take advantage of Clavileño, who will replace his “blessed” vampires with stronger and hard-to-block demons as the game unfolds. Order of Sacred Dusk, whose utility correlates to how many vampires you have amassed, is the de-facto finisher of the deck and should be searched out with either Forerunner of the Legion or Vampiric Tutor if not drawn naturally over the course of the game. Charismatic Conqueror is another key card, forcing your opponents to choose between either allowing your attacks to slip through easier or letting you grow the ranks of your army.

2. Sustain yourself with the blood of your enemies and outlive them.

The vampire tokens have Lifelink and can replenish your life total through combat, and some cards like Sanctum Seeker and Twilight Prophet have various lifegain effects. Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose can even weaponize this strategy by furthering your lead as you incrementally gain life and Vona, Butcher of Magan can use excess life to ruthlessly cut own opposing creatures. The deck naturally leans into resiliency, with lifegain working in concert with the deck’s innate ability to maneuver freely between offensive and defensive play. Kindred Boon can make your vampires invincible, and Bishop of Rebirth, Redemption Choir, and Bloodline Necromancer can resurrect fallen allies.

3. Perform profane rites to conquer the opposition.

Cards that sacrifice your creatures, such as Glorifier of Suffering, Fanatical Offering, and Bartolome del Presidio, bestow unique boons and benefits at the expense of your overall field presence. Of course, this cost can work in your favor as well: this is a great way to get rid of weaker vampires affected by Clavileño earlier in the game to replace them with stronger demons. With Elenda, the Dusk Rose on the battlefield, each sacrifice and offering brings you a step closer to victory by providing you with an increasingly-formidable attacker or blocker who can replace herself with an army when she dies.
