Primer v2.0!!! 88 VOTES, and Commander 2015 Review —Nov. 13, 2015

It is finally time for Primer v2.0!!! This version come complete with:

  • Updated Change Log
  • Possible Additions
  • Possible Cuts
  • Omissions
  • Commander 2015 Set Review (Where it Pertains to Omnath, Locus of Rage

Lets Start with the Commander 2015 Review!

Out of the 23 possible NEW cards in the set, THREE jumped out to me. Two seemed Auto-include, while the last one depends.

First, and most exciting was Command Beacon! I shed a tear of joy when this card was first spoiled! It makes commander-loving decks {Like Omnath, Locus of Rage) very happy. The best part is that it is PERFECT with this dude! The only other commander that might be better is Titania, Protector of Argoth, who just so happens to be in this deck!

Second, Verdant Confluence is pretty fantastic! I love the flexibility! I don't think I will ever be upset with drawing this card past turn 3-4!

Lastly is Arachnogenesis aka Spider Fog! I am pretty sure Atarka's Command is coming out for this, but I wanted everyones opinion first. It shuts down other token deck, and even flyers! Plus with my two token doublers it just gets nuts!

Honorable Mentions

Rite of the Raging Storm - A fun looking card, but not powerful enough.

Magus of the Wheel - If I was playing more reanimate then this guy would be A LOT more tempting.. I think the Wheel of Fortune its self is just fine for now.

Mizzix's Mastery - Out of all my Honorable Mentions this is the most likely to see some play-testing in the future. Recasting a Scapeshift from the grave is pretty nuts! ... But to be completly honest, I better of won already if I cast Scapeshift lol. However, it seems really cool to Overload it with all my Sorcery ramp in the grave too!!!

Now for the newest changes! (More details will be found in the Primer "Change Log"

12 November 2015

Throughout all my playing experience I have noticed that you can never have enough sack-outlets. This one in particular is just bananas! Now each elemental dude does 4 damage! Plus, i can't count how many times someone has spot removed Omnath, Locus of Rage only to follow with a board wipe! This will just punish them for that even more! MUAHAHA!!! The Vigor comes out because I was sick of the group hug... Omnath does not group hug!

VexenX: In the Omnath deck I'm playing, I've never had problems getting the correct color of mana, so I would probably remove Rootbound Crag actually. My philosophy for Omnath is that any two-color lands that don't do anything other than fix (beyond the fetchable duals) are unnecessary. This would include Command Tower too, but in the extremely unlikely event you don't have a Mountain or Forest, it's better than Rootbound Crag. Then again I'm also playing cards like Ruination so I have a little bias lol.

If you've had problems with getting the wrong color, then ignore that suggestion. Now the tradeoff becomes a net loss of 2 mana the turn you use it and you don't get to use the fetched basic, (Jund Panorama) or losing 1 mana and waiting a turn to activate, but you get to use the land fetched, which can be a dual, immediately (Mountain Valley). In that situation, its entirely your call, but I like Mountain Valley more because then you can save basics for your other effects. Also with Amulet of Vigor out, it becomes better than Wooded Foothills!

I go by if it doesn't say mountain/forest in the text box and it can tapp for 2 colours drop it for fetch or basic lands. This deck is about ramping you can always get your colours.

Hi again! Have you considered the Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle + Scapeshift combo? It needs some more mountains, but I believe it adds more power as well. :o

Also, if you play by french rules, Primeval Titan is available, and Dust Bowl, which has great synergy with Titania, Protector of Argoth can replace Strip Mine. :D

HI TehPudding!!!

The only reason I don't run Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle is because I only 9 Mountains including the dual-lands. If I was running a heavy build then it would be an auto-include.

I have a Primeval Titan siting in my binder waiting for the SMALL possibility that it will be unbanned. Him and Omnath, Locus of Rage would be best friends!!!

I try to build my deck as though I won't draw Titania, Protector of Argoth or Crucible of Worlds. If I focus to much on one of those cards, there are hundreds of synergies that I could think up. However, several cards in my deck just so happen to go nuts with ether of them, which just makes for a good time if they come into play! lol

I don't mean to shut down your suggestions, I am really grateful for them! Dust Bowl might find a spot in the deck, but I wouldn't take out Strip Mine.

TehPudding says... #6

VexenX I understand. I was just suggesting that replacement since I play 1v1 and Strip Mine is banned there, while Primeval Titan isn't. :D

I'd also like to know how you deal with combo decks like reanimator. I can't think about many cards that can stop those for Omnath decks. :(

TehPudding: I really do appreciate all of the suggestions and feedback! My deck would not be where it is without you guys!

When it comes to dealing with combo decks all you have to do is just blow them up first! They can't combo out if they are dead on turn 5,lol.

Control can be a bit of a pain, but all it does is slow you down for a bit. I added cards like Cavern of Souls to combat counters. I play in a meta with a lot of blue, and I have yet to lose. This deck is so good partly because it can go from and empty board state to winning in just one turn!

Where's your Goblin Bombardment? It's probably the best/cheapest sac-outlet that you can get your hands on.

October 31, 2015 7:59 p.m.

VexenX says... #9

Jensei: Goblin Bombardment is a great outlet, but I would not call it the bests by any means. I think Greater Good is by far the best in this deck, followed by Perilous Forays. I do think I want to add Goblin Bombardment, I just don't know what I would want to take out for it. Maybe Evolutionary Leap?

Don't forget to upvote! I am working on some additions to the Primer once we hit 75 votes! :)

Goblin Bombardment allows you to get maximum value out of your creatures as you know since it's a sac outlet with no cost, like Greater Good. Unlike Greater Good, you can net value off of smaller tokens like the tokens produced with Avenger and Zendikar's Roil (that you don't seem to run).

Do not cut Leap. Leap is amazing card advantage and it allows you to draw the few important creatures that you run. There are a few "win-more" cards in your list, and cards that simply do not need to be there. Examples of these are Shamanic Revelation (you need a boardstate for this card to do anything, and if you have a boardstate in this deck you're winning anyways) and Primal Vigor (don't help your opponents, Parallel Lives is just fine).

I think your deck needs a bit more interaction. It has some, but it could use cards like Beast Within, Krosan Grip, and Chaos Warp. These cards are staples because they are good, and at some point there's going to be something on the board that you need to deal with, so might as well run the cards for them.

VexenX says... #11

Jensei: You have a lot of logic. You are likely right about Leap, but I think Shamanic Revelation is just to good. Even if 5cmc draws you just 3 cards and gives you 12 life, that is on par with Harmonize, which is heavily played. The fact that it only gets better then that is pretty fantastic!

I think your right about Primal Vigor, it will be coming out for Goblin Bombardment.

I had Beast Within, Krosan Grip, and Chaos Warp in this deck, but I don't really think they are nessisary. Sure, I can't do much against artifacts and enchantments, but that does not matter if I am blowing up the board every turn. Plus, games don't last to long when I am playing this deck anyway.

October 31, 2015 9:41 p.m.

Jensei says... #12

Shamanic Revelation is very winmore to me. Harmonize is more consistent an if you don't want to run that, you could always run Garruk, Primal Hunter. Revelation sucks when you're in topdeck mode (for whatever reason) or when you're behind.

VexenX says... #13

Jensei: I hate to state the obvious, but most good cards in EDH are 'winmore'. Craterhoof Behemoth is only good when you have a sizable force in play, do example.

Wood Elves brings a nonbasic forest and provides an extra blocker if ever needed. :D

November 1, 2015 2:49 p.m.

VexenX says... #15

TehPudding: I think Wood Elves along side others like; Farhaven Elf, Ondu Giant, Quirion Trailblazer, Silverglade Elemental, Yavimaya Dryad, Yavimaya Granger, would all be great cards to consider for this deck! If you wanted to add more permanents, its not a bad route to go!

Nissa, Worldwaker's ult is also insanely awesome. ;D

TehPudding: And then a board wipe... Gives me nightmares...

November 3, 2015 12:13 a.m.

TehPudding says... #18

VexenX: that's why you need Nomnath out when that happens. I think that the fact that she can turn lands into elementals helps too. :o

Thank you random person for the upvote!!!

Beastmaster Ascension is also a good winmore card. :3

November 6, 2015 8:08 p.m.

VexenX says... #21

TehPudding: In this deck Beastmaster Ascension is like a weaker Shared Animosity, and I dont really need two. In fact, Shared Animosity does not have a permanent spot in the deck yet.

November 6, 2015 9:06 p.m.

TehPudding says... #22

VexenX, I don't think it's strictly better, considering that you might not always end up having 5+ elementals to attack with. Also, extra toughness could be useful sometimes. :3

Xenagos, God of Revels can be useful under certain situations too. Not to mention that he's almost a creature, even if your only other creature is Nomnath. :o

November 6, 2015 9:21 p.m.

VexenX says... #23

TehPudding: I do see your point, but Beastmaster Ascension is a card I have played with for years now, and is a bit to situational for my liking. It CAN be very nuts, but I am trying to stay away from "CAN" cards, which leads me to want to take out Shared Animosity. The main reason it is in my list is because I promised someone I would give it a shot. However, in four games, I have yet to draw it.

Xenagos, God of Revels is another one of those "CAN" cards, at least in this deck. He is good to do some great commander damage, but I normally don't want to attack with Omnath, Locus of Rage most of the time. He will also only be active if I have a ton of enchantments in play (because my force is normally based on Tokens).

This deck is pretty much a toolbox deck. I throw down all my tools that I need to finish the job, keeping some key tools back just in case. If the first set of tools are stopped, then I send out wave two, then maybe wave three. I have yet to face someone that can handle three waves of Omnath win-cons. It take A TON of removal, both spot and board-wipes (in that order, otherwise my Elementals go BOOM!) My average game lasts 6-10 turns, even with all the hate. As soon as I bring Omnath, Locus of Rage out, everyone else pulls out their most O.P. commanders, but efforts so far have been in vain lol.

Overall, what makes this deck so unstoppable is that you always draw something you want! Land is good! Sac-outlets are good! Ramp is good! There is never a downside. I draw something, and then just make it work with what I am doing! There are so many ways to win!

Have you thought of running Soulblast? That card has won me multiple games :D

November 6, 2015 11:25 p.m.

VexenX says... #25

gflutoman: Soulblast is extremely interesting! I am thinking about building a heavy /Burn build of Omnath, Locus of Rage, where this card would fit right at home! I my build, mass burn is more of a alternate win-con. I use the burn to mainly deal with annoying creatures and Planeswalkers.

Do you run Shared Animosity? I seems pretty nuts with Soulblast, lol.
