Psychic Frog

Creature — Frog

Whenever this deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, draw a card.

Discard a card: Put a +1/+1 counter on this.

Exile three cards from your graveyard: This gains flying until end of turn.

I too have been trying to build an “X” deck. Definitely a lot of ways you could take this - love your ideas!

Some other thoughts - Confounding Conundrum, Turbulent Dreams, Consuming Tide and Faerie Slumber Party seem like ways to keep the board state in check and opponents’ hands full - though you risk “X" getting discarded if opponents don’t have unlimited hand size. Price of Knowledge could help here. Mind Over Matter, Psychic Frog also seems like potential adds allowing you to discard your own cards for advantage and also would protect against Price of Knowledge.

Also, personally, I find if I have under 37 lands I’m getting regularly mana screwed - and Reliquary Tower seems like it might be a good add here with all the card draw. And Buried Ruin to retrieve any key artifacts.

And maybe Thought Vessel instead of Mind Stone to make sure you’re keeping all the cards you want to?

Personally, I would remove the following:

I would put 2 or 3 Murktide Regents in the mainboard, as the card is a powerful wincon.

Psychic Frog should probably come out of the maybeboard, as it works well with Murktide and is a powerful card draw engine and wincon in its own right.

You might also consider cards like Duress, Thoughtseize, or Inquisition of Kozilek to rip apart your opponents' hands.

While you may not want to net-deck, you may want to check out what are popular decks so you can tune your sideboard to match (or just go to your LGS and see what they play there).

My first reaction here was the Modern Horizons sets. They were made to shake of the format, and they did that a little too well. Ocelot Pride, Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury, Glaring Fleshraker, and Psychic Frog are some of the newest examples, and they pretty much immediately jumped to to the top of a bunch of different power formats. All of the 60-card eternal formats have key cards that got their first print with the last two years, and bans are happening more often than ever.

The bar is definitely being pushed. I just wish supplemental sets wouldn't push it quite so hard. Orcish Bowmasters and The One Ring also need a mention here.

I like the Psychic Frog inclusion, especially with Bloodghast. With Grief unfortunately banned, I think Satoru gets quite a bit worse. Definitely something here, though

sergiodelrio what you're saying is unfortunately true; the majority (lowkey ALL) of my interaction has been away from the LGS for about.. three to four years now. these type of decks are always welcome among my friends because we're not going for true "meta-dominating" decks anymore because as NoobNoob275 will testify, that would mean all four players in our pod playing Abhorrent Oculus variants that include something like Psychic Frog for value. Murktide Regent decks are still prevalent and it's like.. just a stale competitive environment overall in terms of individuality. I'm content playing at technical tier 2, but I ADORE getting the homies excited to brew again. Always up for the conversation so don't be afraid to tag me in it!

With December 16's banned and restricted announcement, I have added Psychic Frog and Vexing Bauble to this list.

Companion really isn't working out for anything. Yorion, Sky Nomad and Lurrus of the Dream-Den welcome Jegantha, the Wellspring to the land of the Modern lost.

Reanimator's gotten a lot of new toys since Faithless Looting got banned, especially in MH2. I'd like to see it float back up the ranks a little bit. I suppose it would be too much for another Golgari Grave-Troll unban? That worked really well last time, right? I'm sure it'll be fine. What's the worst that could happen? There's a lot of options for graveyard hate right now, especially that Surgical Extraction, and Rest in Peace and Leyline of the Void can still be viable when they're needed. Graveyard-omancy is so hard right now...

I'm interested to see Psychic Frog survive. Not super surprised, but I had it at an outside chance of being banned. It's very color-restricted, but it's been a good engine for several decks. I feel like it's right at the top line for Modern utility.
