Friday Night Magic: 2-2
GoldGhost012, 11 years ago
Not a bad record at all! Even better than when I took All Hail Sedge Scorpion, the Storm Crow of Theros!!
Match 1 vs. Izzet (U/R) Keranos: 2-0
Game 1: I was land screwed for about 3 turns and Spellheart Chimera brought me down to 7 before Griptide + Codex Shredder. Actually turned out that by milling him, I was feeding the Tarmogoats. Elixir of Immortality saved me from burn and I able to save myself from Keranos, God of Storms with Cyclonic Rift and countering it as he was recast. Double Dictate of Kruphix and his own (many) draw spells killed him.
Game 2: Much more boring for the first like 8 turns. Basically we both Explored during that time, with a couple end step burn spells. I eventually managed to mill/remove all his Tarmogoats and Keranoses and kept out of burn range to win. Weirdest thing happened when I cast an Elixir of Immortality: he Annuled, I Canceled, he Annuled again, I Dissolved, he Annuled once more, I Dissolved again, the fourth Annul, which was Countermanded, which was Izzet Charmed, which was Dispeled. That felt really good!
Match 2 vs. Naya (W/G/R) Aggro: 0-2
Game 1: Turn 3 Xenagos, the Reveler into Elspeth, Sun's Champion killed me real fast.
Game 2: Managed to blow up a Mistcutter Hydra with Ratchet Bomb and landed Jace, Memory Adept and Aetherize 2 Mistcutter Hydras (he was really confused for a while why I wasn't scooping after landing the second), but even with a Dictate and Jace's +1 couldn't draw into either a land and Cyclonic Rift or another Aetherize. This was the point where I decided to mainboard Aetherize over Griptide.
Match 3 vs. Dimir (U/B) Mill: 2-0
Game 1: We both ended up very close to milling each other out, but with all 3 Dictate of Kruphixes and an Elixir of Immortality, I was in no shape to lose. Would've lost sooner to his 2 Returned Revelers.
Game 2: Drew a bunch of lands, but I landed a Jace, Memory Adept and proceeded to bounce and counter his Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker before it killed Jace and he was quickly milled out.
Match 4 vs. Golgari (B/G) Dredge: 0-2
Game 1: Was in 6th place, so I needed to do well. My deck proceeded to fail me, after mulliganing to 5 cards with no lands in any hand (it's not like I could go down to 4!) I ended up completely land screwed. Oh, and mill helped his strategy. 2 lands and 2 Nemesis of Mortals later, I was done.
Game 2: Faired much better, but my Codex Shredder only helped him shove creatures in his graveyard so he was able to play a Nemesis of Mortals (I countered the second) for GG, Monstrous it for GG, and go to town. I also misplayed a Thoughtseize, letting him discard Cyclonic Rift instead of playing it in response.
Overall, I'm happy with the deck's performance! I kind of wish I had some graveyard removal, but that would require splashing black, and I really don't want to have to spend on a playset of Watery Graves just for the next few months. Oh well.
Also, since I removed Griptide and put Aetherize in its place, what should go in the sideboard? Still have 3 slots, so any ideas?

After 5 Months, I realized that this deck is completely different from where it started at. It's been heavily refined.
Just a little Seizing and Extracting
Rocknj06, 11 years ago
3 cards that I would love to fit in here, but can't seem to find the room would be:
I'd like a 2/3 split of the Thoughtseize and Inquisition in order to peel threats from my opponents hand early in the game. Because of the 2 points of damage Thoughtseize deals me, my lack of lifegain, and it being an expensive card that I am currently in possession of 2, I want to limit it to 2 cards, while having 3 Inquisitions to help make sure I have at the least, 1 of these cards in my opening hand.
The Extraction is just full of flavor, and since I'm putting so many cards into the graveyard, it's not unlikely that I would be able to extract vital cards to my opponents plans right out of their mind.
Any suggestions on how to fit these 9 cards total in the deck would be greatly appreciated.

I replaced some of my main and sideboards to deal with the metagame like RDW and MBD. I removed obzedat and sphere of safety in favor of doomwake giant. Anyway... **=============================** **FNM: 2nd Place 4 - 1** ***Note: All rounds had pyxis played in the battlefield in one or both games.*** **First Round: WB Constellation 2 - 1** First game was rough for me. Although I got first turn Pyxis, he got me on his Brain Maggots and Gift of Orzhovas in the battlefield, exiling my mana dorks and my only 4 non-permanent removals. I lost this game. Second game was the battle of brain maggots again. He got first the board advantage by having a gift of orzhova on his maggot getting 2 of my only 4 non-permanents in my deck. Pyxis was in the battlefield though again by screwing his draws. Later on, I got back my ultimate prices and kill his maggots then banishing light on his remaining permanent. After that, I keep on drawing banishing lights and eventually finished off with Elspeth. He started to get pissed with me because he hates milling and I keep on exiling his library. Third game was not that easy too. He started the game with maggot. This time I got my ultimate price and banishing light to counter it even I have pyxis exiling cards in our library. I keep on exiling cards thanks to banishing light and eidolon helps me draw cards mid game. Eventually, I pulled Ashen Rider and he raged quit and he didnt shake my hand. What a loser! **Second Round: White Weenie 2 - 0** This girl was scary because I always lose to her whenever I use control based decks. Her white weenie is fast as hell. Anyway, First round was not that easy. She started with dryad militant and I started with pyxis again. Then she starts to send boros elite, soldier of pantheon, precinct captain and calvary pegasus while I have sylvan caryatid and courser of kruphix helping me survive on those attacks. Later on, I got my banishing lights and eidolons to further help me survive this game. Eventually, she lost her ammo and finished off with Doomwake Giant and Sylvan Primordial. Second game is my cliffhanger. She rushed me again with soldier of pantheon, judges familiar, precinct captain and calvary pegasus granting her creatures flying while I have only my mana dork in the battlefield. Luckily I have 3 banishing lights in my opening hand exiling her creatures. Even though, she dropped me down to two due to judge's familiar and calvary pegasus...but, hello Blood Baron to my sideboard! I started to swing with him bringing back my life total and then elspeth came in to support him. Eventually, Blood Baron finished the game and got the victory. **Third Round: BG Devotion 2 - 1** Another action packed game for me. First round he got me on pack rats but I got him on banishing lights, courser of kruphix and eidolon of blossoms. Two pyxis was present in the battlefield screwing our land drops [but I got the upperhand though lol]. His desecration demon gave me a scary threat but I got elspeth in the battlefield and sacrificing my soldiers to feed the demon then Sylvan primordial came in the field destroying his underworld connections. The game ends when Angel of Serenity came in exiling his demon and nightveil specter and finish the game with elspeth's emblem. Second game was horrible for me. I got pyxis in mid game and at that time, he got me already with his pack rats and nightveil specter. I lost this game. Third game is another long game. We started with two pyxis in the battlefield then he dropped a nightveil specter. Luckily I got banishing light to exile the specter. Then he got his demon again on the battlefield and another nightveil specter while I got eidolon of blossoms and courser of kruphix. The turning point of the game is I got elspeth again and feed the demon with my soldiers surviving with flurry of his removals plus blood baron again. The game ends when i popped out elspeth's ultimate with sylvan primordial. Bonus: this is the only game that I sacrificed pyxis to reveal the exile cards. Unfortunately for him, he got few permanents, more spells and I got a lot of banishing lights, eidolon of blossoms and an angel. **Fourth Round: RU 2 - 0** I dont want to discuss this because this was an easy win for me. He got mana screwed in all games. As a compensation, I gave him tips on how to improve his deck since he just started to play magic. **Fifth Round: Mono Black Devotion 0 - 2** This was the real deal for me. First round, I got pyxis in the battlefield but he starts to drop his pack rats. I got mana screwed in this game and eventually lost the game. Second round was also rough. I started the game with first turn pyxis. Then he dropped a pack rat. I survived his pack rat a lil bit by blocking with my caryatid. Then again I got mana screwed by seeking for a black source and I lost to his demon and gray merchant. **=============================** Overall, I was satisfied with this deck. I might play this in any prized tournaments around me. I might consider add a land to address mana issues. But then, im happy with the results of my FNM last night.

1st place at FNM (30 players)
janszperger, 11 years ago
So this past Friday I took the deck to my local FNM and ended up going 4-0 to a first place finish! Round 1: U/W/R Control (2-0) Game one was a long ordeal involving my opponent tapping out on turn five for a Keranos while I tapped out for an Ajani. Ajani ended up being too powerful for him to overcome, drawing me a powerful planeswalker every turn, and once he ran out of counterspells for my planeswalkers, I landed a massive Rakdos's Return, sealing the game. Game two I played turn 4 Ajani into turn 5 Elspeth, and I was able to quickly beat down with tokens enhanced with counters from Ajani's first +1. I ultimately won the game after my opponent tapped out for an overloaded Cyclonic Rift, saving him from a lethal attack from my soldiers, to which I Rakdos's Returned again for lethal. (1-0) Round 2: Gruul Midrange/Burn (2-1) Game one I kept a seven land hand with 4 scrylands and was able to scry into Caryatid, then Supreme Verdict, then Sphinx's Revelation. While I was doing this my opponent was ramping up and cast Boon Satyr and a Polukranos. I eventually cast the Verdict and destroyed his board. Two turns later I Revelationed for 4 and drew a Rakdos's Return leaving my opponent with nothing, and eventually winning the game. Game 2, He sided into a cool Satyr Firedancer, Prophetic Flamespeaker package, and was able to quickly kill my Coursers, all while I was taking 1-2 points a turn off of my own Mana Confluence. Game 3 I played Caryatid on two into Courser and land on 3 into Rakdos's Return to destroy his hand on 4. The next turn, I cast Elspeth and quickly drained him to 0 with attacking soldiers. (2-0) Round 3: Mono Black Devotion (2-0) Round 3 I played against one of the best players at the store who is always packing a very powerful deck. Game one he cast a Pack Rat on turn 2 and didn't draw another land until turn 6. At the same time I was ramping with Caryatids and won with an Elspeth. Game two he mulled to 6 and reluctantly kept. He led with Duress taking away a Sphinx's Revelation from my hand of Caryatid, 3 land, Jace, and Kiora. I was able to cast Caryatid on 2 and Kiora on 3, allowing me to play another land and cast a top decked Elspeth on 4, again quickly winning me the game. (3-0) Round 4: B/G Devotion (2-0) At the end of round 3 there were only 3 players with a record of 3-0 and I got the pair down. Game one my opponent got too greedy with his Pack Rats, discarding a card on turn 3 and 4 to make more, who all met the wrath of my Supreme Verdict. I was then able to contain all of his threats with removal and again won with Elspeth. Game two I cast a turn 3 Courser that helped me gain a lot of life, but I was starting to get worried about the two Desecration Demons he played on turns 4 and 5. I top decked a Detention Sphere the next turn and went way ahead on board. The next turn I bestowed Chromanticore onto my Courser of Kruphix, who bestowed me with a 2-0 victory. (4-0) At the end of the round, I learned that the other two people at 3-0 going into the round had split leaving me as the only 4-0 player remaining and giving me first place! I had incredible fun all night playing the deck and can't wait until I get to play it again next week.

Moved Anger of the Gods into the sideboard replaced with Frontline Medic. So: -2 Anger of the Gods +2 Frontline Medic
teamplayerx, 11 years ago
Went to FNM with it and won it with a record of 3-1 and overall 7-2. Beat budget deck, junk midrange, B splash g with 11 removals and lost to U/W control in finals but won with overall tie breaks because of sweeping first 3 rounds. At GP Chicago and about to play with it.

In: Meishin, the Mind Cage Geth, Lord of the Vault Ravenous Trap Bojuka Bog Altar of Dementia Silent Arbiter Stifle Out: Swamp x1 Geralf's Mindcrusher Mana Leak Lazav, Dimir Mastermind Propaganda Koskun Falls Soul Manipulation
I'm giving Meishin, the Mind Cage a try, though he may not stay in depending on how it goes. Silent Arbiter seems like a perfect fit in this deck and I don't know why I didn't think of him sooner. Lazav, Dimir Mastermind feels too situational to rely on and Geralf's Mindcrusher just doesn't do enough for me. If you're wondering why I took out some counterspells, I think the game is more fun for everybody when they get to play their favorite cards, even if that decision comes back to bite me. I'm not sure how good Stifle is in this format, but I think it can work wonders if timed well. Activating Altar of Dementia in response to a sweep just seems too good to pass up. The rest I put in thanks to suggestions from you lovely people. Please keep the comments coming!

Cleaning Up

Cleaning up the comments. Added an extra Shadow of Doubt to the sideboard because of the resurgence of Scapeshift along with it being extremely useful against Pod.phantom495, 11 years ago
I added in reaper of the wilds on the side board to put in with extra kill spells for singularly her ability to let you scry whenever a creature dies.

Went 3-1 tonight. Generally pretty happy with how the deck performed but I'll take any suggestions to make it more competitive.

Finally bit the bullet and bought Thoughtseize given that everyone is so sure it will go up in price. I figure I can sell it later and get my money back. It's in the sideboard because there just isn't a clear spot for it in the main board, and so I board it in for almost every match, but after game one it's much easier to figure out what to cut for it. As for FNM, I went 3-1 to get second place and once again Erebos, God of the Dead did awesome work and really earned his spot among the 60. I added Lifebane Zombie after the tournament because with thoughtseize I can afford to cut a few other things from the sideboard, and that guy is just so good against the decks he is good against, he's a welcome addition to the 75.
