A Call for Help

Commander Deck Help forum

This seemed the most appropriate forum for this discussion to allow you fellow planeswalkers to post decklist!

So here is why I need help. I cannot for the life of me find an EDH deck that I like enough to keep. I started my EDH journey a little over a year ago and I've played many decks, none I was content with. This has made me sorta loath the format as a whole and I decided that it wasn't for me. But now I'm second guessing because I need a format to play casually and play cards that I want to play.

I currently play Standard and Modern. Speaking of which Modern is my favorite format and I love everything about it. I currently have 3 modern decks and I dont want to build anymore. Im also in love with my current standard deck so no need to change that either. Legacy and vintage are out of my budget, pauper isn't supported locally, and frontier is dead. I do love the limited format as a whole and participate in my share of drafts but that only gets me so far.

So I NEED to find an EDH deck I love. I want to play EDH really badly I just have done it wrong in the past so I need your help finding me a commander and archetype to build.

My favorite modern decks include Kiki-Chord, BTL Scapeshift, Faeries, Bogles, and UWR control. My top 5 favorite cards are Voice of Resurgence, Scapeshift, Bitterblossom, Kor Spiritdancer, and Thoughtweft Trio .

Previous commanders I've played include Oona, Queen of the Fae, Surrak Dragonclaw. Kytheon, Hero of Akros , Animar, Soul of Elements , Vial Smasher the Fierce + Thrasios, Triton Hero, Breya, Etherium Shaper. Yes that's a lot of decks in a years time.

Budget is $300-$500 for the deck. So help me find THE deck in EDH. or Advertise your commander and why I should play them. All suggestions, advice, comments are appreciated very much.

You might not like commander because it is so vastly different than modern or standard. Modern is a much quicker game, and usually single player oriented, with much more consistent play. Commander is not those things.

You have to build commander while keeping in mind that games aren't prone to play out the same often unless you are playing like 10 tutors in your combo deck. You also have to build with multiplayer in mind. That means you will have to account for more political play. These two things are what make edh a lot of fun for me, but they may make it less fun for someone who likes modern a lot. (I'm just speculating so correct me if I'm wrong). That being said, I really like Ghave, Guru of Spores, because you can build him however you want to an extent. He can do stax, tokens, counters matter, or some weird janky combos. Very versatile, so you can explore with how you want to play him.

Scapeshift looks like it's a prime for The Gitrog Monster deck, but I do not have a good example of that.

I have a deck with elements of life gain, tokens, enchantments and card draw that is a merge of soul sisters and enchantress for commander using Selvala, Explorer Returned Token fun. Even without building it the way I have, I highly recommend this Selvala due to the ramp and card draw on a 3 cmc commander.

Based on your favorite cards, I'll list a few generals that do similar things as them.

Voice of Resurgence: Great cards in both Rhys the Redeemed and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, seeing as how they both want a lot of creatures to pump the token, as well as being able to clone the token. Also, voice is IMO a very underplayed card in EDH based on the number of counterspells and other instant speed tricks.

Scapeshift: Obviously we want a go-big landfall deck, similiar to Scapeshift/Valakut decks in modern. This points me towards Omnath, Locus of Rage as a landfall payoff, or Mina and Denn, Wildborn, a landfall enabler. Omnath decks typically play more of the mass landfall effects ala Scapeshift and Boundless Realms, with a few big landfall payoffs like Avenger of Zendikar and Rampaging Baloths as replacements for Omnath in case he gets Nevermored or something. Mina and denn decks are more likely to play more land-to-hand type cards like Sprouting Vines to make mina and denns ability more potent, as well as mass landfall payoffs, from omnath to Grazing Gladehart, Zendikar's Roil, etc.

Bitterblossom sees probably the most play in Oloro, Ageless Ascetic, as his lifegain negates the downside, or pillowfort decks like Queen Marchesa that want to drag the game on with cards like Ghostly Prison, Sphere of Resistance, Suppression Field, etc. Think modern hatebears, but a lot bigger. And more hate, less bears.

Kor Spiritdancer = Uril, the Miststalker. All I can say there. Spiritdancer also goes in a huge amount of enchantress decks, with commanders like Bruna, Light of Alabaster, Rafiq of the Many, etc. Usually voltron. Can also be played in the much jankier and much more casual curse tribal deck. Think Curse of Misfortunes and Curse of Thirst as wincons. They're auras too.

Thoughtweft Trio: Only place I can think of is some terrible Kithkin tribal deck. Wizened Cenn is your only real lord... you can have Adaptive Automaton-esque cards as well. Pretty sure that in a Commander clash (MtgGoldfish) episode a while ago Richard played kithkin tribal, so you can look that up. Just remember, this deck is NOT good. I mean, i assume you like this card as just a cheap beater card, in which case maybe just Saskia the Unyielding beatdown might be your kind of thing.

All of these decks can be made for pretty cheap and upgraded pretty high.

Even though I've only played one game with it, the 2017 Dragons commander deck is really, REALLY fun. After some SERIOUS adjustments to the mana base, of course.

To find a good edh deck you have to know what kind of player you are how do you like to win your games my personally im a storm/control player at heart so i fell in love with Mastery of the mizzix. So you gotta ask yourself how do you like to win and we can start from there

Given that you like modern, I would try to first transition into more competitive EDH. A suggestion I have would be The Gitrog Monster. It is a fast combo deck that synergises with scapeshift, one of your favorite cards.

HOW COMPETITIVE IS YOUR META? IF LOTS, THIS LIST IS GREAT. IF NOT SO MUCH, RUN ME OR ANGRY ME!

CRUSH THEM!

If you like selesnya and bogles style enchanting, you might want a selesnya enchahtress deck with Krond the Dawn-Clad as your commander

Thank you all so much for the help and support! At this point I still feel like commander isn't for me. The variation in gameplay, singleton format, and my local playgroup I think have ruined the format for me. I do believe it is the best format but maybe it's not for me. Once again I appreciate you all and wish you the best of luck!
