Tips on good deck building and multiplayer politicking.

EdhRec is the best deck building resource there is...except this one of course.

Top 8 1v1 Commander deck lists

My collection of paper EDH decks has been meticulously crafted for maximum power and mutual gameplay fun, while still maintaining a reasonable budget. Each one is different colors, different strategies, and different power levels from each other for playing against different kinds of opponents. I enjoy being able to play with different decks all the time to keep things interesting. I designed them all to be their own individual experiences, with as few overlapping cards and strategies as possible.

Except for Sol Ring, its in nearly every deck. I own like 20 of them now.

You can see from the picture that I have them all in their own deck boxes, each with a custom label on top. They are also all double sleeved and each box even contains the tokens the deck uses. No sense going to the trouble of assembling these decks and not making them nice to use and well protected.

My tier system is basically figured out by comparing and battling my decks against each other and vs. other people in my meta. How consistently and quickly it can win is a big factor, so is how much removal it has in it. I've seen other people have very complicated and specific ways of calculating the tier of a deck... mine is basically done by gut feeling and personal gameplay experience. Occasionally the decks shift up and down in my list when they get improved or outclassed by their peers.

Generally speaking control strategies and super efficient combo decks are tier 1, tuned mid-range battlecruiser decks are tier 2 and slower, more budget, or weird theme/tribal decks are tier 3 and below.

I just started my online account in December 2016. Many EDH power cards are waaaay cheaper online than on paper (although some vice versa), and I try to acquire as many of them as possible. So far most of my collection is only in Simic colors, which has helped me budget wise a lot. I have a bunch of decent to pretty good decklists figured out so far. I love deck building, its half the fun of this game for me. And the warm fuzzy feeling of ramping and countering spells is the other half of the fun.

I have always been a deck builder. I learned Magic in 1994 while I was in middle school. I distinctly remember a deck I built after Alliances came out that nobody at my school wanted to play against...it was something like 20x lands and all x4 ofs Sinkhole, Stone Rain, Hymn to Tourach, Dark Ritual, Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Ball Lightning, Hypnotic Specter, Balduvian Horde, Order of the Ebon Hand. Later I got to play standard (then called type 2) with Fact or Fiction and Cunning Wish and Upheaval + Psychatog and it was awesome. Eventually around 2010 I felt I was done with the game and sold all my cards. Yeah I did. So many cards...that are so much more valuable now than when I sold them. It was a huge mistake that I don't even like to think about. When the first Commander precons came out, it got me back in...I bought all 5 of those decks, and it helped jump start a new collection. I've been Commandering ever since.

Hey Rzepkanut,

I got inspired by your Mazirek list and I went ahead and created my own:

Mazirek Bodybuilder

I am enjoying a lot of the cards in it, but it feels like it is a bit unfocused at the moment - I have a lot of cards that aim to "go tall" and a lot of cards that aim to "go wide" and I need some help consolidating the list. If you could drop a comment on it, that will be great!

Totally, Plaguecrafter is another one I preordered for this deck the other day...I really like effects like that. So much that I already paid for 4 copies to put into various commander decks.

Titania is a powerful token generator for sure. I don't have a copy currently. I decided to focus on less mana costed token makers, things more like Blisterpod. She has been on my radar to try out in here for a while however. In builds that have more fetch lands she is a little more impactful too. Some people push toward the land sacrificing angle more than I have, including cards like Squandered Resources or Scapeshift. Which are all cool ideas using cards that I don't own currently. I'll keep an eye out for a copy of Titania, it does seem like she would probably be great.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

September 25, 2018 10:31 a.m.

Oh yeah, Izoni's already been preordered for a while :) I'm super excited for Guilds of Ravnica, a few cards from it will definitely make their way in. Once the cards are in my hand physically I'll update the list but I also bought a Midnight Reaper already. Vraska, Golgari Queen is perfect too but the preorders were over priced so I'm gonna wait on buying her.

Said on R.I.P. Brawl...

But I finally built a brawl deck! Lol just kidding, that never happened. Its funny to me that its rotating out of existence with its first official set rotation. Not a long lived format. Although I'm glad they apparently designed cards for the next few sets with brawl in mind to support the format because it means more commander style cards being made.

September 20, 2018 11 a.m.

I recently started playing with a new group that is extremely casual and/or beginner (compared with me) and I knew I needed to build a new deck that could play at their level. I normally like playing control decks but too many boards wipes will make 5 player games last forever and ever. So I made a "rattlesnake" deck that controls the game with fear instead of much actual removal. And it wins with other people's monsters after they do most of the work.

Its the most fun I've ever had playing multiplayer edh.

I would try some more cards that will strike fear into their hearts for ever crossing you and less that cause angry retaliation because of you proactively destroying their threats. Not pillow fort cards like Propaganda think more like Comeuppance or Settle the Wreckage. Then once they know your game plan, any open mana will be scary to attack into. So they will kill each other first, leaving you with a much easier task to finish the game up. I think Fog effects are often underrated in edh. They are extremely powerful if everyone is winning by attacking in your playgroup.

Not sure it will make your casual people like you better, but it worked for me. By the time a couple people are eliminated from a game you can be as ruthless as you want and it will be ok. Just give them a chance to kill someone else before dream crushing them and they won't feel like they just lost the whole game.

Many people don't like dying from effects that are not just "attacking creatures". Combos and control and resource denial decks are "not fun to play against" for these kinds of folks. They are not comfortable with the edh cardpool as a whole but they enjoy some of it, the easy stuff...that moves slow enough for them to react. Its possible your build was just too powerful for that situation but they might have even objected to a powered down version of the strategy just because they don't like playing vs those effects. Good luck.

Here's my "rattlesnake" deck:

The other modes are kinda meh in EDH, so I kinda think its mostly ever only a Disenchant on a stick. When compared to other similar cards in EDH, it stops seeming as great as it does for in 60 card formats. A few other cards that compete with Knight of Autumn off the top:

And I really like Omnispell Adept seems awesome! It's like Elvish Piper for spells!

September 14, 2018 9:07 p.m.

He's got to be one of the most explosive commanders to have out while piloting a storm deck...like pretty much ever. Personally I don't want to change my storm deck to using him because I like having black in my storm deck (with Kess at the helm) but I certainly see the appeal. Seems like an upgrade on the other incarnations of this character that we've seen too.

For me, I just think it's going to be a real fun card to play in other decks....especially in a large multiplayer game...I'll definitely add him to the 99 of at least one or two decks. I've always liked card draw engines that trigger from the opponent just playing magic, the kind that makes opponents groan and it paints a target on my head. Cards like Sire of Stagnation, Heartwood Storyteller, Runic Armasaur, Consecrated Sphinx, Rhystic Study, Nezahal, etc...and this guy fits right into that group.
