Let me draw some extra cards

Modern Control WUB (Esper)

Land (1)

Bringing esper back, baby!

Why Esper? I have chosen esper because it allows you to play control the way it's intended. Draw-go style! Draw a card, play a land, then pass the turn. In standard, esper usually is the more popular control shield and in modern Uw and jeskai is much more dominant.

But why not just slam UW? In the maindeck, we have Drown in the Loch, Kaya's Guile and Cling to Dust with the sideboard offering mainly Unmoored Ego for combo decks. All of those cards are quite big upgrades, they all offer something nice. Drown in the Loch is both cheap removal and a counterspell, while Cling to Dust offers some maindeck tech vs decks like dredge and cards like Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. They give you some adversity that you wouldn't have without black.

Esper is good when people are going grindy. As for combo Narset, Parter of Veils and Flusterstorm are all options to improve against it a lot. But again, if you really wanna beat combo and aggro, then something like UWx with Stoneforge Mystic might be better. This deck is designed for the appriciation of saying NO to everything that oppenents try to do. The goal is therefore to get to a point where you keep recuring Cryptic Command by bouncing Mystic Sanctuary. Deprive works as well. You can also cast Sphinx's Revelation for about something close to 100; that should do the trick as well.

Sideboarding in mordern can be very tricky, especially when you think that you only have a few dead cards and need more cards to take out! So i'm gonna show you how to sideboard with a control deck in modern.

Control mirror (even)

IT'S THE FREAKING MIRROR, so of course it's even. Counterspells and card-draw is good.

In:

2x Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, 1x Vendilion Clique, 1x Unmoored Ego, 1x Anguished Unmaking, 2x Dovin's Veto and 1x Force of Negation.

Out:

3x Path to Exile, 3x Supreme Verdict and 2x Kaya's Guile.

humans (great)

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Meddling Mage and sideboard Xathrid Necromancer can be annoying, but otherwise they just can't do much the almighty Supreme Verdict.

In:

1x Engineered Explosives, 1x Celestial Purge and 1x Kaya's Guile.

Out:

3x Force of Negation.

Jund (great)

Jund is an excellent matchups, and is exactly what Esper is made for. Their long game is not even close to as good as ours, and we have plenty of good answers for their threads. All the removal one for ones with their creatures, and the sweepers can sometimes be a two for one, or even a 3 for one. All draw spells makes sure we newer runs out gas, in addition to making discard less effective. Catch all answers like Engineered Explosives and Celestial Purge is key here.

In:

1x Engineered Explosives, 1x Celestial Purge and 1x Anguished Unmaking.

Out:

3x Force of Negation.

Tron (terrible)

No Field of Ruins, Drown in the Lochs and Supreme Verdicts are dead. Also no good clock. So yeah, just concede. But in case you still wanna try, here's what to do.

In:

1x Anguished Unmaking, 2x Unmoored Ego, 2x Disdainful Stroke, 1x Disenchant, 2x Dovin's Veto and 1x Vendilion Clique.

out:

3x Supreme Verdict, 2x Kaya's Guile, 3x Drown in the Loch and 1x Cling to Dust.

Storm (bad)

storm is another bad matchup, since we have no way to pressure them, so they get plenty of time to set up and play around our countermagic. But we do have some nice sideboard options, as well as the one Cling to Dust. It's close to even, but you probably still lose about 60% of your games.

In: 2x Dovin's Veto, 1x Engineered Explosives, 1x Celestial Purge, 2x Unmoored Ego, 1x Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, 1x Vendilion Clique and 2x Teferi, Time Raveler.

Out: 2x Supreme Verdict, 1x Path to Exile, 3x Cryptic Command, 1x Secure the Wastes, 1x Sphinx's Revelation and 2x Kaya's Guile.

Scapeshift/titanshift (bad)

Without Field of Ruin, there's not a lot you can do game 1. Maybe a giant Sphinx's Revelation can gain you enough life, but that's very unlikely. Second game, you Unmoored Ego is amazing, since it allows you to name Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle. Just be aware of the fact they might have Field of the Dead as a backup plan, so casting Unmoored Ego again can be quite important.

In:

2x Unmoored Ego, 2x Disdainful Stroke, 2x Dovin's Veto, 1x Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and 1x Vendilion Clique .

Out:

2x Kaya's Guile, 1x Spell Snare, 3x Supreme Verdict and 2x Drown in the Loch.

red blitz (bad)

Similar to burn, so lifegain and cheap removal is good.

In:

1x Kaya's Guile, 1x Celestial Purge, 2x Dovin's Veto and 1x Engineered Explosives.

Out:

1x Deprive, 2x Cryptic Command, 1x Spell Snare and 1x Esper Charm.

Ponza (bad)

Another close one, that you most of the time are going to struggle against. Moon, BBE and planeswalkers are annoying cards.

In:

1x Aether Gust, 1x Anguished Unmaking, 1x Celestial Purge and 1x Engineered Explosives.

Out:

1x Cling to Dust, 1x Spell Snare and 2x Kaya's Guile.
