Counterspell instead of cancel

Guitarthunder: Cheaper mana-wise, but would more than double the price of the deck. If I already had some, then sure, though. An excellent suggestion!

  • Slither Blade instead of Mist-Cloaked Herald; it's strictly better.

  • Hands of Binding as a repeatable version of your removal spells.

  • Mindlock Orb doesn't do anything; players will be fetching before turn four. If you're in a casual format, hardly anyone will be tutoring for anything. Excess copies beyond the first are literally useless, and wouldn't it just be better to counter what they tutor for?

  • Ingest also does nothing. I would cut them in favor of cards that have relevant upsides, like Invisible Stalker or Augury Adept. Anyone worth their salt will not be tilted by Ingest as it has equal chances of helping/hurting them.

  • Rune Snag or Mana Leak are far better than Cancel in 90% of circumstances. Any spell that your opponent can afford to pay the tax is likely too small for you to even care about countering, and if it's early game than they are indeed literal Counterspell. Rune Snag in particular scales well as the game goes on.

  • Ordeal of Thassa gives you a payoff for attacking and speeds up your clock.

Finally, cut the deck down to 60 cards. Having over 60 reduces the odds that you are going to draw your best cards. Always stick to the minimum card

Slither Blade. Strictly better than your Merfolk.

Storm Sculptor seems a bit slow as a four drop. Any love for Triton Shorestalker? Your choice, but it could be something to consider. Gudul Lurker is also an unblockable one-drop, so that could be considered as well. Maybe you could use Bonesplitter or Darksteel Axe for more damage from your unblockable creatures? Anyway, nice deck, I like the idea of it.

GoblinsBeatElves You do raise a good point, there. I was aiming for having something with a bit of oomph, since I have 1,2, and 3-drops, but I may switch that out for the Shorestalker and have the Sculptor on sideboard. Thanks for the suggestion, and glad you like it!

You’re welcome! I can see what your saying, that you want to have some creatures with a bit more power for matches that go into later games. Maybe you could take out just 1 or 2 Storm Sculptors for a couple Triton Shorestalkerss or Gudul Lurkers. That would mean that you would get some more early drops, but also have a decent chance at drawing into a Sculptor later game.

Have you considered Curious Obsession? It synergizes well with unblockable, providing card advantage and speeding up the clock similarly to Ordeal of Thassa. In addition, it's very cheap! (Both mana cost and financially speaking.)

October 13, 2018 4:58 a.m.

I second Curious Obsession. Card advantage is a very good thing, and will get you even more unblockable creatures to use later. Unlike Ordeal of Thassa, it gives a steady stream of advantage, rather than a burst at one time, which could be more helpful. Curiosity is also a thing.

Also, I made a blue unblockable deck a while back, with a slightly larger budget. Maybe you could get inspiration from that? Unblockablue (Mono-Blue Unblockable).

I think playing 2 Mana Leak and 2 Rune Snag might actually be detrimental to your deck. With only 2 Rune Snag, the chances of you getting another to get that bonus are low: 11%. And without that bonus, Rune Snag is just a worse Mana Leak. I would either play 4 Mana Leak or 4 Rume Snag to maximize that bonus. Good luck with the deck, hope I helped!

GoblinsBeatElves: I actually had not even considered that. It's an excellent suggestion. Thank you!

Have you tried Master of Waves ?

I'm trying to keep the mana costs super low, the only reason I have Bident of Thassa is because EVERY time I attack with one on the field, I get a card. It sounds like a great choice for a blue/white token deck, though.

There's just nothing more satisfying then having your opponents laugh at 1/1s and shortly after frowning when they realize they're doomed. :)

Coastal Piracy seems superior to Bident of Thassa to me though. Why would you like to force your opponents creatures to attack plus it dodges artifact removal and allows both copies in play. Cheers!

Looter il-Kor for Latch Seeker and River Sneak for Invisible Stalker . if its on budget Delver of Secrets  Flip but you will need to add more spells. all the enchantments seem redundant Ordeal of Thassa , Singing Bell Strike , Waterknot could be replaced by Curious Obsession , Hands of Binding , Hidden Strings or spells like Vapor Snag , Boomerang , etc. Hall of Triumph might be too slow and you can only have one at a time. if you add black to the mix you could have Inkfathom Witch for a bit more reach and better removal plus a few revival cards like Undying Evil and Demonic Vigor , and hand disruption. and having a 4 of Rune Snag will probably help you too, to stop the opponent killing your creatures or getting a threat. that all i got, i think, good luck with the brew.

i would drop Waterknot for Spell Pierce . every deck has a non creature target, and creature heavy decks generally have a powerful target. Curious Obsession is the best. Boomerang is great for this deck too. i would drop the non merfolk cards for merfolk. that way you have the option to use Bident of Thassa and block.

chilbi: The secondary effect is of no consequence, it was chosen because using the card you suggest would double the price of the deck. Why use a card that costs more when they have the same primary effect?

February 23, 2019 6:25 a.m.

octopimp says... #22

The reasoning for keeping Singing Bell Strike and Waterknot are not because they tap a creature, but because that creature does NOT untap during it's controller's next untap step.

I appreciate all suggestions, but many of them are not in keeping with the stated goals, in other words unblockable monsters, with some lock down and card draw. It's also meant to be super-budget, with no cards over 50 cents. Some suggestions were excellent, but quite expensive compared to the rest of the deck.

It's meant to be incredibly simplistic, while remaining fun for beginners.

Thank you all for your feedback!

Invisible Stalker works great in this deck. The hexproof is really useful!

@Memphismaymagic5: Too bad Invisible Stalker is not merfolk, so it doesn’t give River Sneak the +1/+1.. which is also why I took out the Slither Blades out and added 4 Mask of Memorys which seemed like the perfect card for this deck! Way better card draw than Ordeal of Thassa.

@octopimp: Thanks for the the decklist! I really enjoy playing this one.
