You could try something like this. Dino Wars

March 24, 2019 3 p.m.

I started with Modern as my first format. My deck list was a lot like yours, huge CMC creatures and tons of 1 ofs.

So a good place to start is to ask yourself, how do I want my deck to win? Once you figure out what the main way(s) your deck will win, then you can focus your game plan on making that happen.

You really want consistency in your deck. Try picking cards as 4 ofs instead of singletons. If you wouldn't want 4 copies of a card in your deck then it probably isn't worth running at all. (Please note this is only a beginner strategy to get you started and later in your career of magic this logic will no longer imply.) So to give yo a real world example: because you have a lot of big converted cost dinos, a card like Llanowar Elves is a card you would want 4 of. It helps your strategy by enabling ramp for big Dinos to come into play earlier.

So lets start there.

Pick your wincon. In your case Charging Monstrosaur or Demanding Dragon might be a good choice. I could see Aggressive Mammoth working as well.

So once you have how you're going to win, you need to pick cards that will help you enact that game plan. So if you picked Charging Monstrosaur then a play set of Otepec Huntmaster could be in order.

Lastly you'll need some form of interaction. Almost every deck in modern will have some form of interaction. You don't have to completely stop the opponent, just slow their plans enough for your plan to happen. A good choice for your deck would be Lightning Bolt but in your case Lightning Strike could work as a budget replacement. At high levels the difference in mana cost is huge but as someone new, it'll do just fine.

Hour of Devastation is actually a good budget sweeper, works wonders against Spirits.

Id include 1 and probably 2x Anger of the Gods

March 23, 2019 6:09 p.m.

Since you're in Rakdos.

Crumble to Dust and Slaughter Games as 1 ofs are good options.

Blood Moon is the go to but you need to close out the game quickly because they can remove it as well as win through it.

Sorcerous Spyglass is good because it can temporarily stop Karn, Ugin, & O-Stone while giving you a peak at their hand to know which to name.

sharing your list will help us give you better advice. Also what particular flavor of Tron are we talking about?

Which format do you play more?

March 21, 2019 2:17 a.m.

Is this the deck your referring to 5C Sliver Company? If so there is quite a bit of invalid argument on your part.

1st youre running a deck that essentially has 1 card ( Collected Company ) in it that Silver Hive can't supply the necessary colored mana for. 2nd your list also has other ways to produce mana beyond the mana base. Both of these kinda of nullify the statement that you're making.

Let's be realistic here. There are plenty of games that a single colorless mana will be fine but the deck in question is loaded with cards that have double black or double red demands. Not to mention a side board with more mana demands and the fact that he's only running 20 lands to begin with. Adding colorless mana to the list will probably do more harm than good for him.

BTW I've been mana screwed A LOT by simply playing a single copy of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx in a Mono Black Devotion deck with every other of the 23 lands being a basic swamp.

Ask yourself this, if I was stuck on 2 lands, could my deck functionally operate with a dual land and a colorless source? If the answer is no, then you really need to ask yourself if the utility is worth losing games to mana screw.

An additional factor is, Counters in modern are not heavily played right now. U/W Control the formats premier Control deck cares very little about countering creature spells. They're just going to let you build a board and Terminus it away. Spirits have kinda put a huge dent in the counter plan across the format.

PlatinumOne not to be rude but I think you need to play more magic. Your statement is just wrong, those instances come up far more often than you assume and believe it or not single colorless source can cost you the game.

March 20, 2019 11:10 a.m.

What I think your deck actually needs is Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet

March 19, 2019 2:56 p.m. Edited.

In your list I wouldn't run any. You're far more midrange than Aggro.

In a deck that is predominantly creatures, I'd say 4 is usually the right number.

March 19, 2019 2:51 p.m.

Hows it doing in testing?

The thing I would personally change is cutting 2x Crucible of Worlds for 2x Relic of Progenitus or some other form of MB grave hate.

Marrow Shards is great anti-goblin tech that can slot into any deck.

March 13, 2019 4:57 p.m.

I prefer Mastermind's Acquisition . It can be a bit clunky being a 4 mana do nothing sorcery but it also allows you to access your SB game 1.

March 13, 2019 12:31 p.m.

A tutor may help. Mastermind's Acquisition or Beseech the Queen .

What's really missing is a reliable win-con. I think Liliana, the Last Hope is what you want. She can hide behind bridge and ultimate.

Karn, Scion of Urza is an alternative option that would play well.

Trinisphere

It's basically the modern version of Nether Void

Corrosive Gale ,

Sadly, Whirlwind is not modern legal.

Firespout is the go to for a lot of decks.

Plummet also exists.

March 10, 2019 9:01 p.m.

A card I'd really like to see brought to modern is Planar Void . With both Leyline & Surgical Extraction around 50$ a pop we really need some accessible grave hate.

I can't imagine it would stir too much commotion balance-wise.

March 7, 2019 6 p.m.

Baleful Strix would be nice.

I really don't think you need kozileks return. Black mana gives you plenty of sweepers already.

If you do insist on Grixis then I'd strongly recommend Desolate Lighthouse .

Eternal Scourge is totally valid to run but I think you have better options at your disposal. You're running blue and black how about some discard or counter spells?

Definitely run Expedition Map . I'd move Warping Wail to the SB and cut Eternal Scourge completely.

I'd trim either 1x Sanctum of Ugin or 1x Unclaimed Territory .

I'd also probably run Watery Grave over the basics and/or the U/B pain land over Unclaimed Territory .
