Soul Barrier

Enchantment

Whenever an opponent plays a creature spell, Soul Barrier deals 2 damage to that player unless he or she pays (2).

Vadrok looks really sweet and fresh! I’ve been brewing it after seeing your requested commanders video.

My comfort zone is green creatures, stompy, and overrun, so I might use this to branch into a stax/control style. It’d punish crazy ramp and board states, bringing them down to my level, white—style. Recurrable ones include Restore Balance , Smoke , AEther Barrier and Soul Barrier , and your Culling Scales . Some cost more than 3 but are still effective - Damping Engine , Portcullis , Noetic Scales , Incite Rebellion .

I guess from there, win by attacking? Or find a combo. It’s a case of decision paralysis atm, but it’ll be easier to shave down once I decide on a direction.

Well if you're going to run Azor's Elocutors, Chasm Skulker, Sphinx of Magosi and Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker (none of which I would save Chasm Skulker) you might consider cutting Solemnity. Soul Barrier remains at the top of my cut list along with Sphere of Safety for diminished effectiveness in EDH and having fewer enchantments. Maybe consider Norn's Annex as a replacement to both?

And I'll take this opportunity to reiterate the value of Thought Vessel over Spellbook if you're not a playing a cantrip based game.

Here's a list of cards that seem underwhelming or out of place.

Azor's Elocutors: Flavor's great and all, but this is a 5 drop that doesn't affect the board. You then need 6 turns after it drops to win the game

Sphinx of Magosi: Below average beater, below average draw engine, combined it's just ok

Sigil of the Empty Throne: Another 5 drop that does nothing on its own. Completely dependent on casting enchantments, of which you don't have a huge number that's only gonna get smaller as you make cuts

Soul Barrier: 2 damage is a really minor price to pay in EDH

Starfield of Nyx: Another slow 5 drop enchantment. To get value out of it takes turns, and the potential targets aren't exactly massive bombs

Sphere of Safety: Unless a third of your deck is enchantments odds are this is just Propaganda that costs more to cast

Azor's Gateway  Flip: I kinda dig the looting in a 2 drop. If you were to keep any of these cards this would be the one I like the most. But it takes 5 turns to go off, and it's liable to get popped if you start pitching useful cards toward flipping it

Spellbook: Without metalcraft, storm, or any other effects to play off of its 0 drop nature it's just a really underwhelming card for the slot

Venser's Journal: 5 drop that doesn't affect the board or offer any sort of card advantage

Approach of the Second Sun: 7 mana to gain 7 life. Then a turn to untap, draw into it (assuming commander is out and you have the mana or other effects to dig that deep), and another turn to untap and play it again. As far as win cons this isn't the worst there is, but I can't help but feel there are better options in the 7 drop range

Beacon of Tomorrows: This is a card for a deck that's leaning heavily into extra turns and cheating spell costs, neither of which your deck really does

Alhammarret, High Arbiter: Really underwhelming ETB for a 7 drop, especially in multiplayer when you have 3 opponents worth of threats and you can only name 1 card

Of course none of these cards are truly bad, easy cuts, otherwise they wouldn't be in your decklist in the first place. Cuts like this are hard, and odds are you probably really like some or all of these cards. This is my take on some of 'em, and if you wanna keep them just look at the rest of the deck and ask "if not this card, then what?"

I don't know what it uses, probably mana curve and something else, but it has made some stupid decisions in the past, this deck locks good! Maybe a Dismal Failure, Soul Barrier or Dissipation Field? I'll +1!

P.S. I don't play commander and my opinions may not be expert.

Vraska - Vorel can't double the counters on Planeswalkers. I still like Kiora in this deck, but the only way to user her -8 ability right after you cast her is Doubling Season.

Winterblast - All of your suggestions are terrible and you should feel bad. (Except Crystalline Crawler, that's fine.) Why do you hate fun?

Arikarin - Mostly I agree with Vraska; you need a lot more mana. Try to run at least 38 lands, and get some more mana rocks. The very best Mana Rocks for you are Everflowing Chalice and Astral Cornucopia, 'cause they can get really out of hand really fast with Vorel. I also run a Pentad Prism - it just a Crystalline Crawler without a body, it's pretty nice.

Also look into more utility Graft Cards. Vigean Graftmage is really silly with Vorel. Sage of Fables and Zameck Guildmage each do serious work for you.

Mostly I think you need to take out a bunch of cards that are... sort of just terrible?

Good luck!

Von.Banamaor on Stopped Dead in Your Tax (Dimir U/B Taxes)

So, I just learned that Seizures, Errant Minion and Soul Barrier are all illegal in the online pauper format. Which basically means this deck is not viable. I don't think there are any legal approximations, but I am open to suggestion.

Von.Banamaor on UB Mana tax

I am building my own pauper taxing deck based on an old, old deck I once played with using Errant Minion and Winter Orb. I thought I'd see what I could do with a pauper variant. Here is a link to my deck: A Tax to Grind

To start off, I really like what you have going here.

A few suggestions...

Right off, I think you should consider Errant Minion for reasons I don't think I need to explain. Perhaps in place of Soul Barrier?

Most cards in pauper are very cheap and lots of decks are very thin on mana production as a result, so playing Rhystic Study can be a huge burden. Playing more than one, is almost unfair. Plus, you should really have some card drawing ability.

Here are some other ways to consider tapping creatures: Flood, Rhystic Deluge, Norritt & Rathi Trapper.

Shimmering Glasskite might be an interesting creature to consider as well. It'll be hard for your opponent to cast two creature-hate spells in a turn.

You might want to consider Fade Away for the sideboard if too many creatures are hitting the table.

And one last note, if you were to splash green, Kruphix's Insight and Aura Gnarlid would be brutal.
