Encircling Fissure Discussion

It's nice to see an Approach list that is dedicated control. I doubt you need it with this much removal, but have you considered a white fog such as Repel the Abominable or Encircling Fissure?

Nice deck idea. I built something like this a few weeks ago, it has since then been changed and ultimately retired. Not sure how I felt about the deck as it would get torn up by most control based decks. (Go figure, midrange always loses against control). Did better against agro shells and creature based decks. Link to the deck list is posted below.

Originally, the deck was a bant fog shell with great creature curve. Haze of Pollen and Encircling Fissure held the opponents at bay while you waited to build up your board state. Planar Outburst was used as a board wipe just in case opponent were running zombies or creature heavy decks and the plus side was that your land creatures were left alone.

Using Wall of Resurgence to put counters on Cascading Cataracts for a 3/3 indestructible creature who could eventually have flying thanks to Halimar Tidecaller seemed pretty good. The extra graveyard recursion thanks to the tidecaller, made Coastal Discovery and other awaken cards that much better. Sylvan Advocate is a great lord if Fatal Push or other cheap removal isn't running around and Eldrazi Displacer was great with resurgence. Slam down a Verdurous Gearhulk and throw the counters on your creature lands made for a great board state /finisher.

For planswalkers, I threw in Tamiyo, Field Researcher and Kiora, Master of the Depths for the extra control. Not sure if these were even a right fit for the deck, but they worked sometimes. Not sure if this helps, but I did like this deck archetype a lot.

The issue I had with the deck was that if Cascading Cataracts was removed or bounced, you were that much further behind. Not sure what else can be done to improve this deck. But +1 for sure!

Repel the Abominable is much better since it also blocks burn/etc. I'd probably replace the Encircling Fissures though. Any other Amonkhet cards that would make this better?

Thx for the ideas, you definitely touched on some of the concerns I have. This deck is theory, debut at the Salinas, Calif. "GP" Sunday if I can make it

Card Draw is lacking and yes Providence is first on the chopping block.

Encircling Fissure is a one-sided fog with awaken 2 I like, and I was considering trying Seer's Lantern or Hedron Archive as sort of draw.

Oracle's Vault is also a weird consideration that could ramp with Inspiring Statuary and then cast free stuff and spin through the deck quicker.

But, maybe Pacification Array is good to go for more early game stall?

Thanks for the thoughts, the cycling disenchant would be ideal sideboard material as I havent begun to build one yet.

I've been keeping my ear to the ground for this deck and one thing I've seen be really effective is a Gideon of the Trials. The brew they had was much more fog based with Repel the Abominable, Encircling Fissure, and Haze of Pollen. They instead relied on Fevered Visions and Pull from Tomorrow for their draw and I didn't see any New Perspectives. Now I am by no means saying to overhaul your whole deck, just letting you know what I see people doing with Approach of the Second Sun so maybe you can use some of their work to makes yours better.

Of the cards I saw the guy use, Gideon of the Trials seems the most useful, but I'm not sure if you have the space for it.

Quarantine Field is excellent removal. If you want some more awaken spells try Clutch of Currents and Encircling Fissure.

This one is probably the best for your deck Terra Eternal making lands indestructible is super powerful!

Sigarda's Aid, Authority of the Consuls, Glint-Nest Crane

Those are Sram Deck musts to begin with. Whir of Invention is unnecessary usually but as a 1 of to find an aetherflux reservoir I understand it. I would lose the Inspiring Statuary completely if your deck isn't going to change much from what you have listed here. It's not doing much for you. At all.

Why not try a few good aura spells? Conviction is great with ornithopter. Or run things like Ice Over, Spontaneous Mutation, and Tightening Coils for a control field.

You'll do well in standard. Your control is heavy but easy to play and can help buy time for your combo. Maybe try a couple Turn Aside in side board. Or Encircling Fissure as a white fog. There are better cards. Those are just easy to get.

Thanks LCJ38 and Verado

I agree that Repel the Abominable is a great card - I think I'll run four of those instead of Encircling Fissure. The Awaken isn't going to come into play often enough to matter I think. I also think I'll put all four Negate into the main to protect my Dynavolt Towers and Consulate Surveillances.
