Bronzehide Lion Discussion

Okay so I absolutely love Abzan, and have my own version brewed up. This deck looks awesome.
However, the deck seems to be conflicting itself just a little bit. It wants to be aggressive with Bronzehide Lion Warden of the First Tree and Voice of Resurgence but also plays slower midrange cards like Courser of Kruphix, and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
Now, these are all excellent cards, I just think the deck needs to pick and angle and stick with it.
Do you want to be Aggro or midrange? I can make better suggestions based off of that.

Okay. I've taken all of your advice to mind, and the reason why I have 3x Ajani's Pridemate is because I have 1x Brimaz, King of Oreskos, which I don't know if I need it or not. I have 2x Lurrus of the Dream-Den as I have a bunch of 2 and 1 drops, which are Ajani's Pridemate, Adorned Pouncer, Watchers of the Dead, Sacred Cat, and Fleecemane Lion. But if Ajani's Pridemate has counters on it, would reviving it from the graveyard keep those counters? If so, then that would be awesome. I got rid of Bronzehide Lion as it is kind of expensive to make a single creature indestructible for a turn, and added 1x Fleecemane Lion instead. I don't plan on getting rid of Blessed Alliance since if I have 2x Pride Sovereign, I can untap both of them, and if I am fighting a large monster that is attacking, I can use Blessed Alliance to sacrifice it, especially if I can't get rid of it with Selesnya Charm, such as a indestructible 4 P/T.

I’m not sure about your budget, but probably the best option would be to run two Temple Garden instead. There is a reason that everyone recommends using shock lands, they’re very good at what they do and don’t rely on your board state or hand state to enter untapped. Plus, the life cost is mitigated by all your lifegain, so they would definitely be your best bet if your budget is fine with them.
Just as a point about Unclaimed Territory, you can still use it to cast non-cat spells, just not for any coloured components of them. Looking at your spells, most only have one mana symbol on them, so using colourless mana to cast them doesn’t seem like a big issue, and for all your cats this is the most efficient dual land possible. I use the card a lot (since I play a LOT of tribal decks) and this drawback is almost never an issue.
As a final thing, I’d maybe consider cutting back on the number of non-creature spells (maybe just run one less of some of them) and run a few more two drop cats, particularly as you’re starting to use Lurrus of the Dream-Den. You’re running a lot of one off cards in that slot (Fleecemane Lion and Bronzehide Lion), and I think you’d probably be better off adding a few more copies of each, or consolidating behind one of them. Maybe remove the Blessed Alliance for one each of Fleecemane and Bronzehide, or even drop one lion as well to get a full play set of the other? With all the lifegain as well, I feel Ajani's Pridemate should probably be run as a full play set too, but these are just my thoughts.

Hello there, really nice deck. With all the new cats released in M21, I have a few suggestions, along with some older cards you may have missed.
Fleecemane Lion is a very strong cat, being aggressively statted and with the potential to become a major problem for you opponent if it ever becomes monstrous. I would 100% recommend you include this if you’re looking to aggressively threaten your opponent’s life total.
In a similar vein, Bronzehide Lion might also be quite nice, having the same stat line and the ability easily protect itself, or other creatures later on. Not as strong as Fleecemane, but maybe worth considering.
New from M21, Feline Sovereign is a nice lord for your board, as well as giving incidental artifact hate which could prove to be important in some matchups.
Kaheera, the Orphanguard is another lord that seems very good here, potentially even as companion if you want to make the necessary changes to facilitate it. The vigilance she gives is pretty significant too, making a lot of your attacks safer, although you would lose synergy on Oreskos Sun Guide.
With Anointed Procession, another nice token producer might be Cubwarden. Since all your creatures are cats, you can mutate onto anything, and then you’re getting a massive amount of value from it, especially if you have any sort of lord on the field. Also works really well with Adorned Pouncer, since you would then have a 3/5 double striker, which is pretty good.
Prowling Serpopard is another very solid cat, especially into control matchups. At the very least should make the sideboard to be able to combat control and cut off lots of their options.
Keeper of Fables could be an interesting alternative top-end for the deck, you are lacking quite badly in the card draw department, so could be necessary to be able to compete in more drawn out games.
Garrison Cat might be another good one-drop, although might not be better the what you already have. However, if you want to push a more aggressive strategy it could help towards that.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos is another brilliant cat, although is slightly pricier as a result. Rewards you for playing both aggressively and defensively, and gives great value when paired with Anointed Procession. If you can afford him, I feel he is a must for any cat strategy.
With this type of strategy, one of the major weaknesses will always be board wipes, so I’d recommend either Heroic Intervention (although may be a little expensive) or Unbreakable Formation. Formation can be particularly useful since it can also be used offensively to finish off your opponent.
If we are running Ajani's Pridemate, why not run a planeswalker that makes them as well. Ajani, Strength of the Pride feels very strong here, both making Pridemates, working well again with Procession, capitalising on the large board that this deck hopefully gets by bolstering your life, and also having an emergency board wipe for if your opponent gets too far ahead on board. Plus, Ajani is really on flavour for any cats deck.
Similarly, Ajani, the Greathearted will work well with the go wide strategy by pumping all your creatures, plus the vigilance anthem is nice and lifegain can help in a pinch.
If you’re adding any of these cards, you will of course have to make some cuts, and here are my thoughts on what you could remove.
Heroes' Reunion should get out of the deck really quickly. Pure lifegain cards are not as powerful as incidental lifegain on cards with additional effects, even in decks entirely built around the concept of gaining life, which this deck is not. It synergises with one card of which you aren’t even running a full play set (Ajani's Pridemate), so it should not have a place in your deck.
Similarly, I feel that Oreskos Sun Guide is not a card that you want here. The deck feels like it wants to play quite aggressively, and for its cost there are so many cards that do that far better, like Fleecemane Lion, for example. It’s effect is a slow and unreliable form of lifelink and it’s body isn’t great, so I would replace it quite quickly as well.
Watchers of the Dead feels much more like a sideboard card to me. There are lots of decks where the graveyard hate will be meaningless, and so you’re left with a vanilla 2/2 that can be killed by artifact removal. Also, lots of decks will only care about a few cards in their graveyards, and so they would be able to keep them there when you activate the ability. At the minimum I would move this to the sideboard, or ideally replace it there with some more reliable graveyard hate like Tormod's Crypt or Grafdigger's Cage.
While a flavour win and a powerful card, Oketra the True, doesn’t feel great here. She doesn’t benefit from any of your lords, and neither do the tokens she creates. There are more synergistic four-drops that you have access to, so I feel like Oketra should be dropped. However, if you are dead-set on playing the cat god, I would say that you play God-Eternal Oketra instead, the card is just so much more powerful.
Pride Sovereign I find can be an awkward card. It’s a valuable token producer and can be huge creature that is difficult to deal with, but the exert is just too clunky and inefficient, so I would cut down to only a two-of.
Personally, I’m not sold on Valorous Stance or Blessed Alliance. Alliance works well with Pride Sovereign, but since I’d recommend cutting down on the card and pushing for more vigilance cards, the untapping doesn’t feel as strong. The protection from Stance is strictly worse than that of Heroic Intervention, and Dromoka's Command is better removal, so I would cut both Stance and Alliance.
Finally, if you are considering running Kaheera, the Orphanguard as your companion, then unfortunately Metallic Mimic would need to go. Even if you don’t do that, I’d consider cutting down to only two, since double drawing feels sort of bad as they don’t get the benefits of your lords and buffs.
I know that this is very long, but hopefully this is of help to you. Good luck with the deck.

Gaea's Cradle + Finale of Devastation is a good finish with Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest and it gives the creature it pulls in haste. If you pull in Regal Caracal, it gives you 1 attacker for each player that they have to deal with or lose the game (and you lifelink too)
Based on this, I would run Crop Rotation instead of Wild Growth (I would if i owned a Gaea's Cradle) and an Expedition Map instead of Leafkin Druid. The Expedition Map also increases your Mox Opal hypergeometric probability. Don't forget they both also pull Inkmoth Nexus into play if you draw the Gaea's Cradle or need to refuel infect to eliminate an opponent.
Day of Judgment seems wrong, Wrath of God is same but just better, Terminus has the advantage of getting rid of indestructible and a potential cost. I usually just use the swords to get protection, if you clear the board, and then play a Lost Leonin it becomes a sole creature threat for removal.
I see Presence of Gond in the maybeboard, assuming thinking of pairing it with Midnight Guard to make infinite 1/1 elf creatures? It's not bad, but Line 1) Infect T2/T3, 2) Infinite Squirrel, not sure you need a 3) Infinite Elf (but really fun). Midnight Guard + Presence of Gond is easier to tutor than Squirrel Nest + Earthcraft as well because 1 is a creature (unfortunately not a creature for Green Sun's Zenith). Also the creatures are untapped in this combo, vs. tapped Squirrels so a Concordant Crossroads can be a win, could be your potential line 3 for CMC6.
I've personally been avoiding non-T1 lands, if the game is only T4 (or less), Reflecting Pool and Sunpetal Grove going to hurt me in the long run. Luckily they both T2 lands so they aren't that bad, I really like Reflecting Pool too, so can't hate on either of those. The only exception I make is Hall of the Bandit Lord, the way I justify it, is Concordant Crossroads is , where Hall of the Bandit Lord costs to play but maintains 1 card advantage lol. It's a tough justification, but I think it's needed for the early infect multiplier, assuming I T1 Hall of the Bandit Lord.
I like Bronzehide Lion and Snake Umbra going a protection model for your Lost Leonin. With Bronzehide Lion, keeping the open incase they want to remove a vanilla 3/3 (6/6 with Arahbo so he can put a timer/pressure on a player or cause them to defend instead of tutoring a win) just seems wrong though. Snake Umbra might not work, because most removal in Commander is exile not destroy, but the draw is ok. If it was or and recurred like Rancor I would like it, at CMC3 it's just too slow for me and doesn't give the right protection (hexproof).
I mean the deck should work solid, I know how consistent my T2/T3 infect can be, and I can recover in mid-game with swords or combo out, if the game continues. None of our combos are Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation or Omniscience + Enter the Infinite, but we can infect those players who don't engage blockers early.
Your advantage is that Squirrel Nest + Earthcraft is CMC5 whereas my Heliod, Sun-Crowned + Walking Ballista is CMC9 (yuck). My advantage is I can tutor my pieces a little easier. I really like the deck.
At 20 AF's your 20% to T1 use a Mox Opal, your at 16 T1 playable now (excluding exo and swords but adding inkmoth). Expedition Map seems critical. Wish I had a Mox Diamond too. At 20 AF, <=3 AF is 95%.
Could use a Tooth and Nail as a finisher similar to Finale of Devastation since we can't tutor it, wouldn't take too much to build a combo for that. Academy Rector possibly could be a win, but we dont have Omniscience or Sac outlets lol.
How have you found Pride Sovereign? I could never get it to work fast enough to be of value. PS Spike Feeder is awful lol, life does nothing for me, and the only way to kill with infinite life is AF which is impossible to tutor in Selesnya lol.
Keep up the research following the deck now, see if we can continue to innovate, and with an initiative to strengthen in all formats, maybe we'll get something useful. With Rin and Seri, Inseparable, I'm assuming there may be some more GOOD playable cats to pump us up!

Thanks for all the discussion, glad you liked the deck enough to tweak and innovate it, I've been trying but as you can see it's still not quite there yet.
I like Kaheera, the Orphanguard, I actually play a Nethroi, Apex of Death brawl deck with it as the companion. Questing Beast is good with Kaheera, the Orphanguard and can hit planeswalkers, but he doesn't work with Arahbo, Roar of the World even though he LOOKS like a cat to me! Also, Nissa, Who Shakes the World creates Elemental creatures, so it's also not bad, Auspicious Starrix was also been okay, but in Commander all are a bit too slow, plus Auspicious Starrix only good because my brawl commander and things like Migratory Greathorn can trigger him, so nothing too exciting there. The +1 isn't quite a bit to get to a kill with infect, so have to decide with the changes to the companion rule, if it's still worth it, I like the flavor of it though, and it's about having fun as much as the pursuit of winning when your starting with Arahbo, Roar of the World as the commander anyway!
Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest has challenges too, but I like the flavor. That is 1) They are enchantments, which we really only have a couple good ones, Enlightened Tutor, Idyllic Tutor and Sterling Grove, usually I pull Sylvan Library as soon as I can and pay the 8 life a turn to cycle through cards, but for you, you need 2/3 tutors to get there so I might just go straight for combo pieces. Sterling Grove isn't highly exciting, but it can also protect your combo pieces too. Unfortunately Concordant Crossroads can't even get it there, because the Squirrel's are tapped.
TzickyT is right, Heliod, Sun-Crowned + Walking Ballista is still mana intensive, and doesn't go off quickly enough. I usually rely on early Infect to take out the Grixis () player first to avoid early Thassa's Oracle win. If there are several Fish-Consul deck's it's kind of hopeless as I haven't built in any Fish-interaction (like Hushbringer or Tithe). If you can hit the early win-con decks, I can often ramp/resolve the Heliod, Sun-Crowned and take them out. I'm usually not the biggest threat, often needs other to go for the win and get Counterspell too.
I don't have another viable win-con in the cat, T5-7 usually just rely on Stonehewer Giant to pull me what I need to eliminate, protection from sword and Grafted Exoskeleton for example. is a challenge because have no way, but rarely see in commander.
Mox Opal is reasonable replace for Birds of Paradise, don't forget Ancient Den + Tree of Tales are artifacts, and Inkmoth Nexus can become one in a pinch too. Here's the real challenge though Hypergeometric Calc you're only 13.6% to have 3 artifacts on T1 (8 cards drawn), but really 3 aren't T1 viable (Grafted and Swords), so it's more like 8.3%. T2 only 18.2%. T3 23.2%. So have to evaluate how many games are going beyond that and how far, otherwise Mox Opal going to be a dead draw too many games. We don't really tutor artifacts either beyond equipment once we're established. Steelshaper's Gift.
Rhonas the Indomitable is good because I find I multi-trigger his ability, where Arahbo, Roar of the World, I rarely use his secondary ability. Not sure what to do there, may just have rely on other tactics. Approach of the Second Sun is way way way to slow, don't do that.
Hunter's Insight I've had success with because it's instant and draws a lot of cards, Lifecrafter's Bestiary (mana sponge and we're not creature heavy), and Momentous Fall (better but still a light cost intensive CMC4+sac). Puresteel Paladin for me still needs more AF support to, sometimes, he doesn't activate his second ability which is unacceptable.
Greenwarden of Murasa is good late game, but I might go with the pressure of a Questing Beast that hits for 5 and nails a planeswalker over that late of a play. Plus what's he pulling back, your Infect, at that point probably won't connect with combat damage anyway?
With Chord of Calling you can still do your best to resolve a Felidar Sovereign at EOT to win, but I found I didn't have enough creatures to get it off quick enough too. I know I'm just stating problems, unfortunately, still working on solving them myself (or abandoned them). Emerald Medallion is not bad because it adds to your AF count, but problem is the Infect creature is and the double-strike is except Berserk but it doesn't help with that anyway!!
Bronzehide Lion I find too mana spongy too, saving mana for the wrong reasons, but he's recursive, so I don't unlike him haha. If your going Kaheera, the Orphanguard might consider King of the Pride, but I'm meh on him as well. Need some strong cats!
I do have a Cat tribal budget (for $50 commander league) Mirri, Little Kid Aggro, depending on how budget your budget is TzickyT, as I mentioned this one is restricted budget so it has some interesting card choices to keep under budget, games have an hour time limit too, so that also drove several aggressive vs. defensive choices as well.
Knixx, I'll go through your full list tomorrow, and see if I can think of anything that might work. Since you already have Earthcraft, feel there must be a secondary interaction to abuse it as well you could leverage.
Thanks for the discussion, appreciated, I'll add Earthcraft to my Alternative Synergies Excluded so others can see it as well. The Great Henge is draw and an AF but not super helpful for Mox Opal, but with the Earthcraft I feel drawing for each Squirrel (which is a 2/2) could also draw into an enabler (untap and creatures get haste and +x/+x where x is the number of attacking creatures, something like that, there must be in , and since you draw into it every time), problem is, can't make infinite Squirrel then because you draw out, but if some way to win with like 50 Squirrels, a win is a win you know. Lemme thing on it lol.
