Best Rule 0 Commander

Commander (EDH) forum

Figured this might be interesting - who would be in your top 5 best commanders if you could use any planeswalker as a commander. No signature spells or any of the fun shenanigans from oathbreaker - just rank purely based on their own merit or how much you like them.

1) Oko, Thief of Crowns - if they ever change the rules and allow people to run walkers as commanders I can see this guy being banned less than a month into the change

2) Jace, the Mind Sculptor - fate seal, Unsummon and Brainstorm all on a stick; if you're a mono blue tempo deck and you don't want this you're crazy

3) Dack Fayden - honestly this is such a cool card -2 steal a Sol Ring or Mana Crypt just feels so dirty

4) Teferi, Hero of Dominaria - all modes are insane. Replaces itself, protects itself and the ultimate wins the game

4) Chandra, Torch of Defiance - basically a red jace and would be great as a curve topper in an aggro deck or an excellent value engine in a prison deck.

Ruin Crab seems like an awesome commander--I've even built an entire EDH deck around it in the 99 (mono-blue, because how else).

Weatherlight is a dream build of mine, since I love colorless commander decks but don't care much for the current options of leaders. This being playable makes for an awesome deck. Now that I think about it... I should have a quick Rule 0 convo with my playgroup about that one ;)

Huatli, the Sun's Heart seems like she would be a cool Arcades, the Strategist alternative, with a bit of a lifegain subtheme making things interesting.

The best would be Urza, Academy Headmaster. Getting all the colors.

Ruin Crab would be the best lantern control crab commander :)

I sincerely hope they never allow walkers as commanders. People talk a lot about certain gameplay aspects or building considerations that "break the spirit of the format," but that's a bridge too far, for me.

That being said, as far as the "just for fun" category: Nephilim and Evershrike.

Grubbernaut - they have already printed commander specific planeswalkers that can be played as commander. Also, the whole "spirit of the format" stuff won't apply everywhere or to every group; there are prize heavy/documented tournments that go completely against that vein of thinking but to each their own. Everyone enjoys this game differently and for different reasons.

Also, those would all be fun. I wonder if they'll print them with a tiny buff and make them legendary in the future like they have with a few other creatures.

When I first learned the format, I actually thought you could use any legendary planeswalker as a commander. So my first ever build was a Nissa, Who Shakes the World deck as it had just dropped. It’s since turned into (fittingly) my Ashaya, Soul of the Wild deck. But yeah, I’d definitely say that Nissa first really got me.

Not a planeswalker, but Soulfire Grand Master would be a dope commander. Spell slinger deck with the ability to generate infinite mana off cards like Dramatic Reversal or Turnabout and can just lock out the game with infinite turn spells until you can assemble your combo (which can just be something like Lightning Bolt). all for a 2 CMC commander, what's not to love?

Planeswalker: Sarkhan Unbroken
Non legendary: Shaman of the Great Hunt

griffstick - definitely an awesome commander just so long as that site never goes down.

RNR_Gaming says... #11

brandonplaysmagic - It's fitting but I'm a little surprised you didn't go with everyone's favorite mana battery Omnath, Locus of Mana. Though I do think Ashaya is greens best new toy in the last 2 years.

RNR_Gaming says... #12

enpc - I have a feeling if they printed anything like that card at legendary they'd probably have to put that "once per turn" clause just for balancing purposes but would definitely be an awesome card as a commander.

RambIe - I actually think he's undervalued. He does literally everything you want a Walker to do. Also, basically having biorythum in the command zone would be insane.

Og Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker would be cool and strong too

November 9, 2021 9:45 p.m.

RNR_Gaming it took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to do with the deck. I loved the idea of land animation, which is why is spent some time as a Kamahl deck. But Ashaya has really been a lot of fun, like you said.

November 9, 2021 10:02 p.m.

RNR_Gaming: Grandmaster would be a house. You could even build it as a Zirda, the Dawnwaker companion build and still have an extremely powerful deck.

enpc: Feeling a little milly today? ;D

Dreamshaper Shaman would be a hilarious commander. Just play it on clue/food/treasure, increase your production with Xorn and Academy Manufactor and flip big permanents into play every turn.

Regarding PWs: I tend to play very few of them in my decks, but looking at how fun Samut, the Tested can be, I think I'd play her as my commander and just smack face with some timmy creatures. Sounds right up my alley.

Can I choose an enchantment and go with Lich's Mastery? It seems like an interesting challenge, plus you get to channel your inner evil immortal side.

November 9, 2021 11:22 p.m.

I don't know about "best", but I would totally build a deck around my favorite pet card: Phyrexian Obliterator..

Grubbernaut says... #19

RNR_Gaming I know, I know. But even so; if the RC is going to exist, and the format is going to have "real" rules (even if many groups alter them), I do feel that allowing any walker as a commander isn't a good move. What people want to play is absolutely up to them, but having a relative base to refer to is still handy.

I'll punish myself sometime with a rule 0 Tibalt deck.

RNR_Gaming says... #20

Grubbernaut - I actually play a Valki deck in historic brawl and it's pretty decent and fun as long as it's not paired against a kinnan/winota/golos. I don't think itd be the correct move either but it'd be kind of interesting if they did a small window for it like they did for the un-stable commanders. I've been finding deck building to be a tad stale these past few sets and think it'd breathe new life into the format creativity wise but would definitely need balancing and probably a few bans lol

plakjekaas says... #21

Tezzeret the Seeker would probably be in the top 3. Don't forget you're playing a 4 player game, no matter if it's your commander, the planeswalker will still die if it looks threatening. Searching out your combo artifacts (The Chain Veil ahum ahum) directly into play is probably a lot better than protecting a value engine that proved itself in 1v1 formats and usually falls short in multiplayer.

Teferi, Master of Time would be silly too, the only planeswalker that does scale better with multiplayer formats

My playgroup tried using non-legendary commanders for a change. I went with Drannith Magistrate as my commander. Now we’re back to playing regular commander games lol

Anyone think a rule 0 teir list would be fun? All legendary non-creature permanents evaluated and ranked by power.

November 10, 2021 2:45 p.m.

Unlife says... #24

Maelstrom Archangel seems like it could be fun, she's basically a legendary creature already.

Minion of the Mighty, just some equipment and a bunch of dragons.

Not sure if there are any planeswalkers I'd actually want to build into a commander deck.

November 10, 2021 2:48 p.m.

griffstick says... #25

RNR_Gaming, I think a teir list would be cool but really unnecessary

November 10, 2021 9:24 p.m.

RNR_Gaming says... #26

Sometimes its about fun griffstick lol. Commander at its core is casual but it's still fun to evaluate things kinda like whenever people discuss who can beat Goku or power levels/teirs of video game characters in smash.

Dont get me started on dragonball homeboy I know wayyy to much about dragonball. Goku has more L's than anybody in the whole franchise. But I get what you mean. And I did say it would be cool

Yamcha can say he defeated goku but Vegta cannot XD

November 10, 2021 11:19 p.m.

(DBZ & Super) Goku never won any of the significant fights 1v1; he always had help. Ironically, the only exception was against Majin Vegeta..

Grubbernaut has a point. Rule 0 is intended to be fun but it's just a matter of time before someone sits down and says hey guys rule 0 your all going to love my ugin and karn plainswalker partners deck.

griffstick says... #31

Ugin and karn does sound spicy. Or Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker for flavor purposes

Hydra Rudemaster

Wanting to make Dragon Broodmother as well.

I'm joining in on the fun. Incoming rule zero deck. I've always wanted to build a deck that's all about having all 3 keywords. Vigilance, deathtouch, and first strike or doublestrike. Basically I want to attack every turn and block every turn and win in combat every turn. I'll have it done by tonight.

RNR_Gaming "RambIe - I actually think he's undervalued. "
sorry for the late response
back when it was popular in my meta i used to run Sarkhan Unbroken as my oathbreaker with Worldly Tutor or sometimes Repeated Reverberation as the signature spell. free tutor any creature to hand or draw 3 cards for 1 mana he always had value in the zone. my playgroup doesn't support rule 0, but if it did he would be my goto (ps i hate that they made him temur plainswalker he would have been the perfect commander for the jund windgrace precon while windgrace himself would have made more sense as a naya general)

November 15, 2021 1:32 p.m.

RNR_Gaming says... #40

I'm not sure lore wise if windgrace is Jund or Naya. Though Naya would of definitely had a cool face card with him at the helm if he got color swapped.
