More Hydras, counters, and mana. New CMDR —Aug. 9, 2023

I'm back after a 6 year magic sabbatical!

Good stuff have happened for the hydra tribe in the past years, and the deck have gotten an overhaul!

Feedback and suggestions is most welcome!

@freakman13

  • Now I want to build a Ulasht, the Hate Seed deck myself, though I have a hard time spotting the synergy with few big creatures.

@FLATSO99/griffstick

  • Thunderfoot Baloth is great, but the condition can be hard to satisfy later. Also it is a creature that are quite easy to destroy/exile. I think Brawn is my best option at the moment.
  • Bellowing Tanglewurm is awesome! I think Brawn has a slight edge over it as it works form the graveyard where it is slightly harder to remove.

Cheers

I really want to make room for Abundance (crazy combo with Sylvan Library) and Creeping Renaissance (or Harmonize).

Any suggestions for what to cut?

Cheers

Asceticism and Conjurer's Closet are both removal-evasion cards. Creeping Renaissance is a fallback if removal evasion doesn't work. If you want to take out one of those, that would make sense.

I think that Zendikar Resurgent does just about the same job here that Abundance does, giving you some card advantage as well as ramp (Abundance does if you choose land as the type). This being the case, you should probably keep one or the other.

i would definitely be running Momentous Fall, Life's Legacy, Soul's Majesty, Harmonize since you said you need more draw. Chord of Calling and Worldly Tutor are other obvious potential inclusions.

what is your budget?

i assume Gaea's Cradle and Sensei's Divining Top are out of the question? (as you should be running sensei's BEFORE Mirri's Guile)

cavern of souls is useless in this deck, also check out my hydra deck, and let me know what you think of it, its heavy on the hydras

If flyers are a problem for you, you may want to consider Raking Canopy. I run it in my mono-green EDH deck and it's beast. Alternatively, Bower Passage could help you on the defending-from-flyers end.

I like Gravity Well, too.

For some good repeatable card draw, I'd recommend the diviner's wand, actually. If you put that on your hero's bane, it suddenly becomes flying and gets extra power for when you have tons of mana to pour into it. I once swung with a 2560 hero's bane that had entered the field that turn, from this deck: Jormungand has nothing on me

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds looks like she's going to be very good in decks like this is was thinking of using her as my commander for a similar deck. Nice work with your deck Hydras are the best creature type.

I can't believe I chuckled at that horrible joke...

What I actually can't believe is that I don't see a Vines of Vastwood in your list. If scrolling over the card doesn't make you put it right in the 99, let me tell you what it can do:

  • protects your creatures from anything targetted for mana symbol g
  • Titanic Growth + Hexproof for mana symbol gmana symbol g
  • if casting it on your opponent's creatures, you've got a green version of Intervene for mana symbol g

If you compare it to the next closest cards Woodcutter's Grit and Glint, it becomes especially apparent how busted this card is, and with neither of those you even get the Intervene effect, which is all the more powerful as it's something a mono-green deck normally doesn't bring to the table!
If you think the above reads a lot like a modal spell, you would be correct, as you actually utilize all of those modes to their fullest in EDH.

I would also suggest some tribal staples, such as:

  • Urza's Incubator (2 free counters for each Hydra, as well as cheaper re-casting of your Commander; plus if you play it turn 3, you can play your Commander and Lightning Greaves in turn 4)
  • Door of Destinies (this might be overkill, but if you can play it early, it will reward you for playing some of your Hydras early on, making it impossible to race them.

I would furthermore take out Blade of Selves... it seems like an almost dead card, as your Hydras will most of all come into play as 0/0 creatures, which doesn't seem all that useful.

Good luck from here on out!

Raking Canopy is a very good way to deal with flyers :)

Have you thought about Domesticated Hydra? Seems a tad weak at first, until you tell it to fetch and devastate (meaning activate monstrosity).

I feel like Surrak, the Hunt Caller would be good in this deck since you're most likely going to have formidable very quickly

Feed the Clan for the fun of saying Feed the Hydra plus 10 life?

In this deck, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds sounds like a fun possible include. Especially with the X ability

Have you considered Tempt with Discovery for ramp? its pretty useful in 4 player games or larger. My group plays 6 player games fairly frequently

Lifecrafter's Bestiary could possibly help you out with card draw, and its scry effect makes it a solid card for green Commander decks in general. Also, +1 for the silly hydra joke, it legitimately brightened my day. I always appreciate seeing people actually try with their deck names and descriptions!

Alternatively you can also make this Rosheen Meanderer and still keep it monogreen or splash red, while also gaining access to some of the gruul hydras like Apocalypse Hydra among other things.

Notes for a revision, and some replies

There are some really good suggestions to the deck, but I know I am going to have a hard time cutting for them.

@Dreno33

@beakedbard

@BlueScope

@canterlotguardian

@Phaetion

@vibrabones

I should also make room for / consider

Cheers

While Storm Front and Spidersilk Armor are not on theme with hydras they are arguably more effective than Blade of Selves in your deck. I mean it could be a thing to use the blade on a Yavimaya Elder, but I should think there are far better targets and if there is not you have a place to cut from.

I like! Had a brief look through (I'm not the best at magic) and was surprised you wouldn't play with 40 mana. Anyways, I like the deck. If you want you can have a look at mine, would be appreciated. Thanks

Isnt Courser of Kruphix banned?

April 19, 2017 9:28 a.m.

Nevermind. I mistook it for a different card. Rip.

MrHighscore says... #25

@Malachy_ I try to balance draw, ramp and lands in my deck. Read the Tuning your Commander article by Ulka for the reasoning behind this mix. Ofcourse it depends on colors and style (and somewhat on your local mulligan rules).

Cheers
