Sideboard

Maybeboard

Here's a deck for around $100 that slays decks that cost many times that number.

update: this is frustrating. It looks like one of the cards keeps going up un value so I can't keep it under $100 it won't stay there. Maybe close enough is close enough.

This idea started off as a fun deck, designed not to win so much as gain a bunch of life and nuke everything (then gain some more life and nuke everything again, then gain some more...).

Then I noticed: it started winning. It wasn't supposed to, but after some more testing, I realized it was a lot stronger than it was supposed to be.

And so, I refined it. I toned down some of the life-gain cantrips and added Kitchen Finks to make it more aggressive, diversified some of the nukeage, and replaced Kabira Crossroads with an Emeria, The Sky Ruin engine. I later changed up the land base, adding in Idyllic Grange and Flagstones of Trokair to feed the Dust Bowl. Finally, Serra Avatar and Mistveil Plains as mill insurance.

If you're familiar with a little game theory, this deck wants to play an infinite game.

Sit back, gain some life, and build while the opponent spends resources. Get them to overcommit, and then blow up everything. The longer you can keep this game going, the stronger you will be.

The toughest match-ups will the break-neck aggro decks like Affinity, Dredge, Goblins, Reanimator, etc. For that, it's good to bring in Settle the Wreckage and Swords to Plowshares.

I recently replaced Rest in Peace (an absolute middle-finger against certain opponents) with two additional Remorseful Cleric because he's almost as good as RIP, brings me closer to $100, and brings more aggression to the table.

4x Remorseful Cleric instead of 2x and 2x Rest in Peace also because of $100 cap. He also gives an aggressive option for sideboarding against combo and counterspells.

Vengeful Dreams instead of Settle the Wreckage because of $100 cap, but also quicker defense against Reanimator, affinity.

The main thing I want to do right now is get it under $100. I'm pretty close. The hardest part is the land, which eats up $50 in only four cards: - Kor Haven - Emeria, The Sky Ruin - 2x Dust Bowl None of these feel dispensable, but among them maybe Kor Haven, which would come out for another Plains and save about $10.

The only other high-dollar card is Elspeth Tirel. She does amazing things, but she also eats up $9 of my cap, and could swap out for a Planar Cleansing

Either of two changes would do it, but I'm still looking at other ways to reduce it, hoping I can keep at least one of them: - replace Oblivion Stone with Planar Cleansing to shave about $3 each - drop the Flagstones of Trokair to two to shave off another $2 - find an alternative to Settle the Wreckage like maybe Vengeful Dreams
