The Vampire

a classic tale of
love, tragedy,
and death

Happy June you beautiful bloodsuckers (or whatever month it is now). I bring you vampire tribal with my favorite planeswalker Sorin, 3 Mana Bloodlord. Strategy: get out S marked vampires with Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord's -3 (or mono-black ramp) and use the little guys for New Blood's additional a vampire cost to seduce opponents' creatures. Flavor aside, I've tried really hard to make a fun and powerful deck around my favorite version of Sorin. Especially after a friend gave me his SLD print.

It takes two...

Forbidden Love with New Blood

Best played at tables that also have kindred decks. Especially if you manage to snag a legendary creature centered around a creature type. But New Blood is more meant for heavy hitting targets. Particularly ones with flying, menace, or that can’t be blocked.

A Flashy Entrance

It’s best to get the ball rolling early. Luckily my favorite princely planeswalker is only (big reason why he is). Necropolis Regent on turn 3 is quite explosive. Though this does carry some drawbacks; leaving Sorin at 1 means he’s extremely vulnerable. Ramp isn’t just for more S vampires later in the game, but also to make sure Sorin is on the field so New Blood could be cast at the right time.

Health and Hemosage

Lifelink, the perfect keyword for vampires. But this isn’t just a nice way of staying alive, it’s also a need. Plenty of spells and abilities in the deck require a payment of life points. Mostly for drawing cards. Burn is for making opponents hurt just as much. Then taking this further with Sanguine Bond types like Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose to really exsanguinate them, which often finishes out the game.

Bloodthirsty Conqueror + Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose

You can replace Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose with Starscape Cleric.

A classic. Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose will trigger Bloodthirsty Conqueror which will trigger Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose again... you get the idea. Starscape Cleric is the only version of Sanguine Bond that costs , making it possible to achieve this combo on turn 3 if you bring out Bloodthirsty Conqueror right after casting Sorin.

• Maskwood Nexus

Frankly unfun and inconsistent.

Used to run this and Conspiracy as well as Blightsteel Colossus, eldrazi, and every black tutor I could find. Putting them on the field with Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord's -3 or casting them and turning them into vampires with New Blood. Isn't as strong as it sounds in practice.

• The Elderspell

I really want to, I do. If anything I'd remove Bitter Triumph to make room. But for now I want to keep Oathbreaker removers at instant speed, even if it’s only one target.

• Exquisite Blood

Was replaced with Bloodthirsty Conqueror.

• Demonic Tutor

Running Vampiric Tutor instead is a personal preference and I really don’t need more than one tutor. I’d rather have more vampires or removal.

Major changes starting with Bolas's Aetherstorm (Aetherflux Reservoir + Bolas's Citadel + Sensei's Divining Top ). While the rush of putting it together was super fun, actually doing so was few and far between.

I've also focused less on the Exquisite Bond combo as well. Infinite combos are good at preventing drawn out games, but not something every one of my decks need to focus on.

As a result I've put more of an emphasis on my winning strategy (flying S vampires), card draw, and removal. I relied on New Blood to "remove" pesky creatures a little too much.
