Sol'kanar the Swamp King Discussion

From the listed commanders, I'd consider the following very interesting:

Jolrael, Empress of Beasts: Some neat shenanigans with Ezuri's Predation.

Basandra, Battle Seraph

Sol'kanar the Swamp King with Throne of Bone, Demon's Horn and Aetherflux Reservoir to abuse Bolas's Citadel. That one I actually like the best.

SMASHER101, shadow63 is correct in that some cards that I wish to see reprinted have never been printed in the new frame style and also need new art, and, to continue that subject, it would be nice to have another reprint of Doubling Season . I know that that card has already been reprinted several times, but anything that reduces its price is good. I also would like to see a reprint of Sol'kanar the Swamp King , since I am certain that he would look awesome in the new frame style.

Again, is Commander Collection replacing Signature Spellbook, or will the two product lines coexist?

If you look at the Gatherer entry for Captain Sisay, you'll see that her ability text was errata'd to mention only legendary cards. This is because the "Legend" type on older cards has been replaced by "Legendary" followed by any other types. You can see this by looking at the Gatherer entry printed vs. oracle text for something like Sol'kanar the Swamp King. Sisay can look for any card that is legendary. This includes legendary creatures, noncreature legendaries like Godsend or Yawgmoth's Vile Offering, and now planeswalkers. With the release of Ixalan, all planeswalkers were changed to be legendary.

"306.4. Previously, planeswalkers were subject to a “planeswalker uniqueness rule” that stopped a player from controlling two planeswalkers of the same planeswalker type. This rule has been removed and planeswalker cards printed before this change have received errata in the Oracle card reference to have the legendary supertype. Like other legendary permanents, they are subject to the “legend rule” (see rule 704.5j)."

Today's spoilers were not as impressive as were yesterday's, but they were not too bad.

The reprint of the white Akroma is nice, as she is not only my favorite creature, but my favorite card overall, in the entire game, but she really did not need another reprint, and her being reprinted only adds further agony to her memorial not being reprinted.

On the other side, another reprint of Pernicious Deed is always welcome, as that shall help to keep it affordable.

Stangg was a very random choice, but at least one card from the original Legends set is being reprinted, although I myself would have preferred Sol'kanar the Swamp King.

I think this thread is suffering a bit of an identity crisis.

There's a lot of cEDH discussion, which is focused around archetypes > commanders. Winterblast posted a beautiful 5-color Kiki-Hulk deck, but I wouldn't contend that it's a Ramos, Dragon Engine deck, because it usually wins without casting Ramos. Ramos just happens to be the least useless commander for this archetype to get to 5 colors.

A commander's utility - not just its color identity - should be central to the deck's game plan if it's being posted on a "generals by tier" list. If not, I contend the list rank cEDH archetypes, some of which are commander-centric (like Teferi, Temporal Archmage) and some of which are archetype-centric (Esper storm piloted by Zur the Enchanter).

Perhaps it would be helpful to have a section about cEDH archetypes and then follow with a list that centers around decks that win by casting their commanders some high % of the time.

On the other hand, if you run the tier 1 Grixis storm list and replace Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge with Sol'kanar the Swamp King you're still likely to beat up a pod full of tier 2.5 decks.

miracleHat you're reinforcing the idea that there should be a cutoff around tier 2.5-3 where all the remaining decks are in a single "non-competitive tier".

1) top tier competitive

2) competitive

3) under-tested / new brews / boarderline

4) non-competitive

You can swap Sol'kanar the Swamp King for Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge in the tier 1 Grixis storm list and stomp through a tier 2.5 pod but that doesn't mean Sol'kanar the Swamp King is worth discussing or moving out of the garbage.
