More competitive

memdem, 3 years ago

I just added Triumph of the Hordes For an easy win. And also even though I havent focused to much on this deck thanks for 200 views! I think im going to try to focus a bit more so any helpful comments are appreciated.

Also some budget fixes for Triumph of the Hordes is cards like Overcome because it is so budget. Also I may end up moving Triumph of the Hordes into the maybe board for a more spicy but less super budget deck.

Thanks!

In: Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator
Out: Breath of Fury
Breath of Fury hasn't performed as well in this deck as I hoped it would. I got it off yesterday and I couldn't attack. so long as just anyone has a flying blocker, I can't win. it only works if I add in tetsuko, umezawa's fugitive, then my locusts are unblocable, but I don't want to do that, Malcolm with Glint-horn is just a cleaner and better combo that should kill the table most of the time and if not, then 2 of the most powerful players get taken out, leaving you with 1 to deal with.

Holy Sh*t An Update In 2022

outofborderline, 3 years ago

The last time I *wrote* an update for this deck was 2016. But now I am here once more, tweaking this list. Changes I made today as I added to/changed the Primer section were: * Mana base adjustments: For 2022 and for the playtesting I did. Still sub-optimal and with some sort of budget in mind, but better. Less likely to get stuck on B early when you need G. * Maybeboard full rework: Moved things that used to be in the Primer to the Maybeboard, added past suggestions, added new cards I'm considering. The Revision section will stay visible and you can keep seeing what I tweak, even though I do it in a disorganized fashion.

Redone.

I've been retooling the deck as of late and will post update changes at a later date.

OUT: Thran Dynamo - IN: Nyx Lotus

Kougaiji38, 3 years ago

Took out Thran Dynamo for Nyx Lotus.

Strictly better. The floor is basically 1, since I will almost always have my commander, and the ceiling is ridiculous.

OUT: Terrain Generator - IN: Expedition Map

Kougaiji38, 3 years ago

Took out Terrain Generator for Expedition Mapfoil.

I'm not getting enough card draw in this deck for Terrain Generator to work well for me. I can recurr Expedition Map with Goblin Welderfoil for myr tokens at least.

OUT: Manabarbs - IN: Mana Geyser

Kougaiji38, 3 years ago

Took out Manabarbs for Mana Geyser.

Just switching stuff out for more ramp to enable a few more explosive turns. Its hard to figure out what to cut. I figured Manabarbs was a good candidate since it doesn't synergise super well with other cards in my deck. Since I want to be casting big spells it kind of punishes me more than others. Ideally you play it last after you set your engine up, but it's not enough of a disincentive to prevent opponents from casting a 2-4 mana removal spell to pull apart my combo and bring me back to the place where I have to cast spells again. If im not using it as a win more card its a dead card in my hand.

A couple of key changes:

Aven Mindcensor was cut for Drannith Magistrate; funnily enough, the latter was in the very first incarnation of this deck, but I cut it for fear of being too oppressive. Now, considering how much removal Liesa has to eat on a regular basis, I feel the deck needs more proactive, efficient, and impossible-to-ignore hatebears, and the magistrate fits that role nicely.

By that same token, Angel of Destiny was cut for Grand Abolisher. Not once have I ever knocked someone out with the angel, and since the card in this slot basically serves to eat removal anyway, I figured I’d rather have something that

A) is useful at any time, not just when things are going well in the lifegain department

B) costs significantly less to cast

Decklist Update #2

Frazzify, 3 years ago

I've made the following changes:

-1 Harvester of Souls

-1 Driven / Despair

+1 Command the Dreadhorde

+1 Gnaw to the Bone

Harvester is the kind of card that this deck wants (hence the inclusion of Grim Haruspex, Fecundity, etc.), but given the low amount of interaction in the deck it's hard to justify paying 6 mana for the effect. It's cost makes it very difficult to fit into a turn, and it usually doesn't come down until long after I need it.

I really like Driven / Despair as a card, but this just isn't the deck for it. If the two halves were flipped I would consider keeping it, but even then it would be close. The creatures in the deck are fairly undersized, making the trample on the from mostly irrelevant. Since its main function was to act as card-draw and it's not able to fill that roll effectively, it's getting cut.

Command the Dreadhorde gives the deck some additional late game power that isn't reliant on you already having a board presence. Its flexibility in the midgame addition to being able to set up wins in the late-game makes this inclusion a no-brainer.

Gnaw to the Bone should help to bridge the gap between the mid and late-game, which is where the deck can really hit its stride. Additionally, the extra life helps to off set the life lost from early Midnight Reaper and Fell Stinger, and tees up a big Command the Dreadhorde.

first game

valdismaybeabigailtv, 3 years ago

I played my first game against my friend with this deck and almost won unfortunately. he was playing a creature focused deck and played annihilator causing my strategy to crumble. i asked him how I could improve my deck and he liked everything but triskalepedia so I'm thinking about cutting triskalapedia for another card with a different win condition card. he also said that I didn't get enough blood token and over the game I got only three tokens per game and finally he said As well have more cards so I sacrifice them to use mayhem devil effect

Some Improvements

DreadKhan, 3 years ago

So, still on Shrines, but with way more wincon support/general power. Since Deserted Temple and Serra's Sanctum are often bad lands to draw, I only removed 1 Plains. The Sanctum isn't wildly useful in here, but it can provide fuel for Sanctum of Tranquil Light, but that's a reasonable ceiling, turning off a player's army isn't a bad thing, and the deck has a reasonable ability to draw masses of cards via Shrines, so the pile of mana can also be helpful there.

Still looking at Zur, to find key enchantments like Shrines, Freed from the Real, and Fires of Yavimaya to win faster, which would be a nice buff to the deck. Esix is worth a look, lots of potential to make our Spirits less bad. Looking at Collective Voyage as another big ramp effect, because I feel like Sisay does enough with an influx of basics compared to other decks, and other players might not be running many basics, so this feels good.

The deck feels fairly fun to play, but it is painfully lax on interaction. That is probably part of why it's fun though, just keep pushing ahead with your value train, and adding Jeggy will be a big help in that plan, hitting 5 is now a bigger deal. I suppose adding Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is a bit of a buff too, pretty cute interaction with Kazuul actually, attacking me would start to look pretty unpleasant, where you need an 8/8 to start generating damage to me, because Elesh swings things by 4, and Kazuul makes 3/3s, each ground pounder that isn't at least an 8/8 before Elesh Norn is just going to get massacred, and the deck can also swarm with tokens potentially, also helpful with Elesh. I feel like Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger might be too nasty for this, but I've got one kicking around, and this would be the home for it, to only be played vs very annoying people maybe (following pulling Elesh haha)? It's a nice buff, and a nice debuff, and if I get him out for WUBRG, he's excellent value.

Edit:Huh, thinking about pulling Forbidden Orchard to add it somewhere else. I don't love giving out bodies here anyways, so this is probably a fine choice if I can find almost any other 5 colour land, but I could also just add a Forest?

OUT: Howling Mine - IN: Blinkmoth Urn

Took out Howling Mine for Blinkmoth Urn

Need more ramp for those high cmc, more ramp updates coming soon

OUT: Decree of Annihilation - IN: Tibalt's Tricker

Kougaiji38, 3 years ago

Took out Decree of Annihilation for Tibalt's Trickery

Between Decree, Jokulhaups, and Obliterate its the hardest to cast. Also, while these three cards are super good to lock people out when I have the ping machine up and running, they can be dead draws. I'm also running out of ideas for what I want to cut from the deck. About that, more updates coming shortly.
