Eldrazi in modern

Modern forum

Posted on July 29, 2014, 6:19 p.m. by ChiefBell

Has anyone managed to run eldrazi in modern successfully?

Has anyone managed a T3 eldrazi? If not, has anyone managed to stall for long enough to cast one T4?

Most interested in perfect ramp and manabases.

It's not ramp, but esper tokens will occasionally use Polymorph to get them out.

I see eldrazi (emrakul specifically) occasionally in blue tron and as a win con in the time walk decks, but that's about it. With 12 post being banned, I think that an Eldrazi ramp strategy is too easily interrupted to be competitive in the format.

No one is casting Eldrazi on turn three, in any format except perhaps Vintage (and I doubt it there either). The old TwelvePost decks could cast an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn on turn five or six, usually later because they walk into disruption and have to answer some things. The best way to cast Eldrazi is probably through Tron (R/G probably, you get Eye of Ugin to make it more consistent), or through some sort of Elf silliness.

You could combo with reanimator, Polymorph , all kinds of things to cheat out a big guy, but casting it on turn 3 seems ambitious.

You can do 7 mana turn 3. There are 8 mana Eldrazi. I thought it MAY be possible.

I'm pretty sure TitansFTW has managed to figure out how to do more than 7 mana by turn 3. He's the ramp expert on tappedout I believe.

You can't reanimate a Titan unless you use instant-speed reamination. Just so nobody gets any crazy ideas. :)

ChiefBell says... #9

You can reanimate Ulamog's Crusher . If there is any decent 1 or 2 cmc reanimation for it. I don't play reanimator so don't know much.

Elvish Piper and Quicksilver Amulet are the fastest way to get an Eldrazi on the table.

Ah, by Eldrazi I assumed you meant Kozilek, Ulamog and Emrakul (aka the only ones worth casting/reanimating). You can reanimate then in response to the shuffle trigger, in case anyone wants to try that. Goryo's Vengeance is the weapon of choice in Modern.

I'm interested in knowing how you make >7 mana consistently on turn 3 outside of Tron. I can see multiple Wall of Roots into mana guys, but that sounds like Magical Christmasland with extra sprinkles to me.

With a good hand you could have 8 mana turn 3 with an Everflowing Chalice kicked once turn 2 and the entire Urzatron.

In Magical Christmas land you could get 16 mana turn 3 with:

thispersonisagenius - 3x Eldrazi Temple casts a 6 drop T3 as well. Like I said there are ways to cast like 6 or 7 drops on T3 but I haven't found a way to go one further to 8.

ChiefBell says... #15

obviously no 6 drop eldrazi though :(

Gidgetimer says... #16

Wait, add 1 more mana to that you can kick the turn 2 one 4 times. not that it matters in the magical Christmas land we are living in at this point.

Dalektable says... #17

In magical christmas land, in my MGD deck If I were to play Emrakul I could get twenty four mana on turn three theoretically.

T1 Forest mana dork

T2 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , 2x Burning-Tree Emissary into nykthos for a Khalni Hydra .

T3 Activate nykthos netting you thirteen mana, drop a second nykthos sac'ing the first and activating it for 13 more ending up with a total of twenty four mana. Cast Emrakul to your hearts content. Obviously this is uber magic christmas land, with one of these cards having to be drawn along with a god hand, but theoretically possible haha.

I mean if we're just going shits and giggles at this point:

T1: Forest , Arbor Elf

T2: Forest , tap it to cast Utopia Sprawl on the untapped Forest. Now tap the second Forest for 2 mana, then untap it with Arbor Elf for 2 more mana, making a total of 4 green mana. Use this to cast any of the following: Arbor Elf + Overgrowth , Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl , Voyaging Satyr + Utopia Sprawl , or Garruk Wildspeaker then untap both lands for 3 more mana and cast Overgrowth or Utopia Sprawl .

Any of these options will give you 10-14 mana on Turn 3.

Exhume can get out an Eldrazi turn two as long as you dumped it there turn one with something like Putrid Imp .

Just play Tron with mana rocks (i.e. Azorius Signet , Talisman of Impulse , etc.).

Turn One: Tron piece, 1 mana artifact (Expedition Map , Chromatic Star )
Turn Two: Tron piece, mana rock, possibly crack Chromatic Star if the mana rock was a talisman, float green, cast Ancient Stirrings
Turn three: Final Tron piece, play Ulamog's Crusher
Turn Four: Play second Urza's Tower , cast Kozilek, Butcher of Truth or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre

July 29, 2014 7:37 p.m.

You can Genesis Wave for big numbers on turn three or four pretty easily in Wave/Green Devotion, which is generally better than eldrazi-ing.

July 29, 2014 8:54 p.m.

Axebane Guardian + Freed from the Real and one other defender = turn 4 infinite mana/emrakul or anything for that matter. I've had great success using it in my deck Emrakul, the Flying Spaghetti Monster

July 29, 2014 11:22 p.m.

-MisterJ- says... #26

You could always use the good old fashioned Pili-Pala +Grand Architect scheme to go infinite as well and drop ALL the Eldrazi, especially if you can pull off a Blue Sun's Zenith as well to draw them all out. But I believe we're still living in that magical Christmas land you people were talking about earlier.

July 30, 2014 12:01 a.m.

Even faster than that! Turn two infinite mana! Any forest land (Including shocks if you want other colors) on turn one, cast an Arbor Elf . Next turn, play an untapped land that produces green. Cast Utopia Sprawl on your untapped forest. Choose blue. Tap it, then untap it with arbor elf. Tap it again, cast Freed from the Real , leaving a blue mana floating. Untap your arbor elf, repeat.

There is my Modern deck that can pump out eldrazi on turn 3 ealriest with luck draw on turn 2:

Turn 2 would be 3x Desperate Ritual and then Possibility Storm -> Ornithopter -> exile until emrakul.

this is the deck:Possibilitytron

Best I've seen was an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn /Griselbrand reanimator with Goryo's Vengeance .

If you want to hardcast, why not use the G/R Tron shell with Eldrazi instead of Karn, Wurmcoil, etc?

TheGamer says... #30

I mean... My elf tribal deck can easily pull off a turn 5 Eldrazi, and turn 4 with a good hand sure. Also as a back-up plan it has the elves as a beatdown plan.

Pilz_753 says... #31

You can cheat an Emrakul or any other Eldrazi into play on turn one. You play Swamp , exile Simian Spirit Guide , cast Faithless Looting discarding Emrakul + something other, in response to the trigger you exile another Spirit Guide and cast Goryo's Vengeance . You can also do some absurd things with Descendants' Path .
