Mono-Blue Thopter Deck

Philosophy

After looking at all the Thopter decks around at the moment, and mucking around with my own R/U version, I started to realise that a Mono-Blue variant might work better.

Especially due to the Legendary nature of Pia and Kiran Nalaar , and the fact that it seems to take a while to fully utilise their ability. Whirler Rogue is the same cost, with an ability that doesn't make you lose your Thopters, and you can have more than one copy on the field. Even better, you can use its ability immediately.

So now I present to you ... Monothopters!!

Concept

Utilise cards that support Thopters.

Mechanics

Frost Walker

Not many people seem to understand the role of Frosty "No Friends" Walker in this deck. This is how I use it:

  1. Get big opportunistic damage through if the Opponent has no blockers.

  2. Wreck a Creature with 4 toughness that is attacking.

  3. Trade for a Deathtouch Creature.

  4. Take mana dorks out early.

If you don't like Frosty then make a version of this deck without it. I love it, want to marry it, settle down, and have children with it.

You are wasting your time if you tell me to swap Frosty for Hangarback Walker. I've tested it extensively and don't Iike how it works in this deck.

Land

An important thing for this deck is to get moving as fast as possible and keep early momentum up. It is also important for this deck not to lack mana in the early game.

24 lands is just right for that.

It's important to remember that if Darksteel Citadel is ensouled with Ensoul Artifact it is unlikely to be tapped for mana.

You can speed this deck up Post-Sideboard by taking some lands out and replacing them with cheap Counter spells.

As always, +1 is appreciated.

My LGS decided to play 5 rounds before the BFZ pre-release

2-0

Played versus a RG deck with a heavy dragon focus.

Was able to shut down 3 Thunderbreak Regents with Clash of Wills and Claustrophobia. My board went wide due to Thopter Spy Network.

2-0

UW Control

Got out fliers like Darksteel Citadel with Ensoul Artifact and Ornithopter with Ghostfire Blade and was able to Counter his early Counters.

2-1

I remember going low in blood sugar during this game, and playing a young fellah whose two mates were watching most of our games. He was trounced quickly in two games, the other one he held on and was able to get me. That's all I can recall.

1-1

UB Control

I hit him hard out of the gate with a perfect mix of Ensoul Artifact on Darksteel Citadel, Ornithopter with Ghostfire Blade, and Whirler Rogue.

I should have taken a Mulligan the second game, as I was colour-screwed through seeing only Darksteel Citadel.

Ran out of time to finish our third game due to so much control in both of our decks. He clearly would have won.

2-1

We really shouldn't have finished the third game as we went waaaaay over time, but I talked the guy into giving me the win as he couldn't kill me but I could have finished him off with my fliers.

He was playing RW ramp with a lot of interactions that let him draw cards. A lot of them returning Elvish Visionary to hand and then recasting it. He got a lot of mana to do this through Karametra's Acolyte.

He Sideboarded Ainok Survivalist in, which took away my Thopter Spy Network and my Chief of the Foundry in the second game.

My Claustrophobia was useless once Gideon, Battle-Forged  Flip hit the board, due to its +1 ability.

Third game I was able to remove his threats with Dissolve and Aetherspouts.

It was a tricky deck to play against and very clever. He built it himself.

GG

I will miss this cool little Monothopters deck so much.
