Small tweaks —Jan. 5, 2014

Sylvan Tutor out Survival of the Fittest in. I'm playing around with more graveyard interactions and Survival makes me able to get the creature I want/need. Now.

Chromatic Lantern out, Ancient Tomb in: with this mana base the speed of the extra mana is more valuable than the color fixing.

Good call on that one! I quite like Lotus Cobra and I've been meaning to acquire a few lately anyway. I dealt any copies I pulled away during Zendikar block because they were fetching a good return...

Exploration seems good, especially since this deck occasionally draws me 12 cards in a turn. I'll keep my eyes open.

In addition to Exploration , there's Azusa, Lost but Seeking and Oracle of Mul Daya , both of which can work with Wild Pair .

2 cents:

Exploration and Oracle of Mul Daya are both amazing early, or if you are facing decks that draw you cards e.g. Nin, the Pain Artist or Edric, Spymaster of Trest . Being able to empty your hand through land drops isn't something to sneeze at.

Ok, so I made some tweaks. I have some cards to acquire to make it happen now but I think it's probably more powerful.

What are your guys' thoughts on Yavimaya Elder over Sakura-Tribe Elder ?

June 5, 2013 5:40 p.m.

Epochalyptik says... #5

They serve slightly different purposes. Sakura-Tribe Elder is little more than a creature-based Rampant Growth . Yavimaya Elder is far more mana intensive, but it nets you three cards in hand. It does not, however, give you any true ramp. It just guarantees your next two land drops.

If you find that you normally have some excess mana in the early game, you could go with Yavimaya Elder . I normally see people playing both, but it's a matter of preference.

Well, I've chosen to go with the STE over the more risky Harrow because I don't need my ramp countered AND lose a land in the process. For now.

Pattern of Rebirth might be worth it to drop on you pod target before sacing it. I like what you've done to change up your ramp suite. To second what Chief said, Oracle of Mul Daya has been amazing for me whenever I play it as it lets you play lands off the top of your library and really thin out your deck.

Oracle of Mul Daya is being tested right now and so far so good. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

It's actually making me reconsider Krosan Tusker . I've cut it in the past because it just wasn't that effective but with Azusa and the Oracle dropping extra lands for me, Wild Pair tutoring Angel of Serenity and Birthing Pod turning the Tusk into Avacyn...it seems like it has a lot of utility. Never mind Paleoloth returning it to my hand to cycle after I've podded it into something useful.

Pattern of Rebirth is intriguing. I'm just not sure I have my Pod reliably enough to make this card consistently do what I want it to. Gamekeeper is another card I've been looking at that is in the same boat. I suppose I'm playing in a format where creatures die anyway...I'll have to think about that one.

I've been contemplating deconstructing my Trostani, Selesnya's Voice deck and rebuilding it into a mayael deck. Check out my deck on my page and tell me what ya think! :)

Sterling Grove is more than just a tutor, and I think just the fact that it has more utility that Enlightened Tutor , which is in here, is reason enough to make room for it.

Maybe remove Stoneforge Mystic ? since it only grabs the sword? Your pairings wouldn't be hurt too bad I don't think.

@ BigSal Sure, I'll check out your deck. I'll do that a little later today.

@ ChiefWannaHacka I'm hesitant to cut her; for one, she's a foil I pulled out of a booster. Second; when Wild Pair is online I have five creatures that are effectively a tutor for the sword and Sword of Feast and Famine is almost always useful. Even more so I think in a deck that is as mana hungry as this one is. I have to avoid making decisions based on magical rainbow land situations though...

The major downside is she's only a tutor for either the Sword or Lightning Greaves which isn't always the best draw, and if I cut her I can still get them with Enlightened Tutor if I need to. I'll have to think about this a little.

Nice deck. Seems very effective and fun. +1

Have you thought about Illusionist's Bracers for your general?

If you have some naya tips for my deck, The Sith Lab, it would be greatly appreciated :)

I have considered Illusionist's Bracers , but at the time I was running Rings of Brighthearth to double her ability and not enough creatures to makr it worth it. Now I also have Yavimaya Elder and Sakura-Tribe Elder , along with Elvish Piper . I've cut Rings of Brighthearth recently to make space...I'm just not sure what I'd take out.

Strionic Resonator, just saying lol.

July 5, 2013 10:56 a.m.

MindAblaze says... #15

Lol. Copy a Sun Titan trigger? How about a Wild Pair trigger? Would it work with Academy Rector ? Probably not because it says "you may exile...if you do..." and I can't exile the same creature twice. I'll be waiting for the resonator...

July 5, 2013 11:17 a.m.

Most of the abilities attached to a creature lol, but yeah I think Academy Rector is a replacement effect.

July 5, 2013 11:55 a.m.

MindAblaze says... #17

It'd be sweet to copy a Warstorm Surge trigger when Blightsteel is coming down...and cruel.

Have you considered Asceticism over Privileged Position ? Seems like an upgrade to me (with the regen creature ability in this deck, saving your fatties from dying to threats early on)

July 30, 2013 12:59 a.m.

MindAblaze says... #19

I used to run Asceticism and actually upgraded to Privileged Position . While the regen is nice giving all my permanents hexproof I found to be more valuable.

You may put on a Gaea's Revenge to pair with Vorinclex!

Also, where's your Quicksilver Amulet ? :)

Great deck! Now I'm inspired to try a Mayael deck!

July 31, 2013 8:10 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #21

Gaea's Revenge is just kind of lackluster. I try to not run creatures that do nothing on their own other than attack, and my curve is already kind of high otherwise I'd be more actively looking for pairs for Vorinclex. There aren't many though.

As far as Quicksilver Amulet goes; to put something in, something must come out. Any ideas?

Thanks for the vote!

Well, now you got me... I'm terrible in suggesting things out. Suggesting thing in is so easier!

what do you and ChiefWannaHacka think of Oath of Druids ? I dont like that it gives it to every opponent but when I play mayael, I usually have less creatures than most of my opponents and the ones we are dropping are (most likely) bigger. Its hard to tell if its bad or not. In 1v1, I think it could be killer.

August 8, 2013 2:07 p.m.

I think it could work if you built around it. Like if you were playing with some GY recursion. Things like the Eldrazi, maybe Wheel of Sun and Moon , or get crazy with Conjurer's Closet /Mimic Vat /Sun Titan and Eternal Witness . You get a lot of value, cause you're prepared, and opponents have to make choices or just deck themselves by accident.

MindAblaze says... #25

If you planned for it I'm sure it would be great. It's similar to Wild Pair in that it isn't a card you can just chuck into a list. I spent a little time tweaking my list for it though, and it's one of the strongest cards in my deck.

Mayael likes a good amount of recursion anyway since we tend to be victims of board wipes. I'd like to see it.
