The agenda of this deck: Play mana dork, play giant monster, punch them in the face, and then cast
Crater's Claws
for over 9000. GG
Let's go through all of the cards, shall we?
MAINDECK
4x Goblin Rabblemaster: This guy doesn't need an explanation. BASH FACE
3x Stormbreath Dragon: He proved himself to be a format staple in last year's RG monsters deck, and nothing has changed since then. Especially good at killing a fresh planeswalker, Stormbreath is straight value every time.
4x Elvish Mystic: Just an extra land drop most of the time, but occasionally serves as a clock when the board is empty.
4x Sylvan Caryatid: Another ramp mechanism. Very handy for the classic turn 3 Stormbreath Dragon or Sarkhan.
1x
Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
: Sarkhan is a solid threat and removal spell, although he often just eats a Hero's Downfall before he can do anything. Make sure never to send him out unprotected by a wall of mana dorks.
2x
Xenagos, the Reveler
: The party never stops, even after his buddy
Domri Rade
got the boot. The satyrs are very handy in a pinch, but are generally just chump blockers in the current green-heavy metagame. His +1 is where the real action is.
3x Polukranos, World Eater:
2x
Arbor Colossus
: WHY DOES THIS GUY NOT SEE MORE PLAY?!? He eats Wingmate Rocs and opposing Stormbreaths, and is otherwise a 6/6 body for 5 mana that kills things. You can't go wrong. I think he is perfect as a two-of, as most decks are playing at least one flyer.
1x
Ashcloud Phoenix
: Flyers are really good, and flyers that never die are even better.
4x Lightning Strike: Well duh.
2x
Crater's Claws
: About 50% of games with this deck are won with a claws for 10+ damage on the spot. This card makes the deck work, and is impossible for anything except control to play around effectively. When in doubt, this is the card you want to topdeck.
HOW TO SIDEBOARD AGAINST THE BEST DECKS IN THE FORMAT
Against Abzan: +2 Setessan Tactics, +1
Arbor Colossus
, +1 [[Hornet Queen], -2
Xenagos, the Reveler
, -2
Boon Satyr
This matchup is not hard if you come out fast enough and play your cards right. Their action starts on turn 4 with rhino, so if you can get a threat out first you are very likely to win. Tactics is good removal, Colossus is just another huge body that can block rhino and kill wingmate, and Hornet Queen is always solid against opposing midrange decks. Xenagos doesn't do much for us besides die, and Boon Satyr is too slow.
Against Mardu Midrange: +2 [[Anger of the Gods], +1
Arbor Colossus
, +1 Hornet Queen, -2
Boon Satyr
, 2x Lightning Strike
Mardu is a race, every time. In game one, landing multiple huge threats (Stormbreath + Polukranos is the ideal curve). Depending on whether their hand is heavy on creatures or removal, they will play like a control deck or an aggro deck. In both cases, try to get the job done before Wingmate Roc shows up. Games 2 and 3 are no different. Although you may be tempted to play the control role and just focus on killing their guys, they will get ahead eventually. Race with big threats, and then kill them with
Crater's Claws
.
Jeskai Tempo: +1
Arbor Colossus
, 2x Anger of the Gods, -2
Boon Satyr
, 1x
Ashcloud Phoenix
Very similar to Mardu, except that Jeskai is more resilient and less powerful. Overload the board, but NEVER LET THEIR MANTIS RIDERS HIT YOU MORE THAN ONCE. Arbor Colossus solves this problem, and Anger clears out all of their creatures. Boon Satyr dies to literally everything in their deck, and Ashcloud is too slow.
Sultai Whip: +2 Tormod's Crypt, +3 Mistcutter Hydra, -2
Arbor Colossus
, -2 Lightning Strike, -1 Bow of Nylea
Whip of Erebos is your biggest problem here. If you can quell the assault before it comes down, you should be fine. Tormod's Crypt destroys the deck for 0 mana, and mistcutter is a good threat against a deck that will be playing
Disdainful Stroke
. It also is blank to
Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
.
