I'm Looking for Enchantments Like Painful Quandary to Harm My Opponents in EDH

Commander Deck Help forum

The aforesaid enchantments will be used for my superfriends deck, which encompasses all five colors.

I prefer enchantments because they combo with some of my other cards, but I'm open to alternatives: I even have some in my deck.

Just in case someone else might get some use out of this thread, here's a list of enchantments of I've acquired so far, even though they're more annoying than specifically harmful. I like the prison sub-theme that exists in my deck, but I'd like to ramp up the pain.

Winter Orb

Mana Web

Aura of Silence

Karmic Justice

Sphere of Safety

Crawlspace

No Mercy

Fog Bank

Collective Restraint

Stormtide Leviathan

Dissipation Field

Norn's Annex

Ghostly Prison

Propaganda

Frozen AEther

Kismet

Maze of Ith

Kor Haven

Ice Floe

Stasis

Archetype of Imagination

Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger

Aurification

Horn of Deafening

Door to Nothingness

Not an enchantment, but Kaervek the Merciless does that, without them getting the choice.

Angel's Trumpet, Eon Hub, Fatespinner, Lethal Vapors are all that come to mind.

No Mercy and Oppression, though oppression affects you too

this is a creature, but Archangel of Tithes?

Archfiend of Depravity would fit in with your theme.

I also love Kaervek the Merciless, but he's a little to easy to remove.

Loving Lethal Vapors and Eon Hub!

No Mercy is great: I have it in my deck.

If not for the fact that Archangel of Tithes was so easy to remove, I'd definitely put her in.

Oath of Gideon sounds cool, but I don't know if I would get enough bang for my buck with that card.

Is there an enchantment equivalent to Archfiend of Depravity?

I cant think of one at the moment. You might consider Grave Betrayal and Authority of the Consuls as well.

Thanks, I really like Authority of the Consuls: it goes great with Frozen AEther.

Breathstealer's Crypt great against creature based decks, also can eventually give everyone perfect information.

Breathstealer's Crypt is my favorite one so far: very similar to Painful Quandary, which I like.

Manabarbs is one of my favorites. Not really the same as painful quandary but it can really mess up ramp strategies. Same with Ankh of Mishra and Zo-Zu the Punisher.

Thanks, nice suggestions!

Price of Knowledge is another good one.

Polluted Bonds, Bloodchief Ascension are both pretty similar to Painful Quandary. I think Spreading Plague, Wound Reflection, Overburden and Tainted AEther are all pretty mean and similar to other suggested cards.

I don't see the thread connecting all those cards, because some are group slug, some are pillow fort, some are stax, sone are just good blockers, some are won cons, etc.

What type of enchantments are you looking for? What's the type of effect you want?

April 14, 2017 9:41 a.m.

I'm just trying to slow my opponents down and gradually reduce their life totals/resources, shifting their focus from attacking my planeswalkers to trying to remove the enchantments listed above. Ultimately, they are a diversion from the real threat.

Even a card like Winter Orb works great for this deck, since that card doesn't prevent the accumulation of loyalty counters.

Also, blockers like Fog Bank are just fillers until I find something better.

However, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and Stormtide Leviathan are great at locking down the board, in spite of being easily removable creatures.

"Slow down my opponents" is stax, "gradually reduce their life totals" is group slug, and "shifting their attention from attacking my planeswalkers" is sorta pillow fort.

Of those, I have a list of pillow fort cards (but some might not protect planeswalkers): MagicalHacker - List of All Pillow Fort Cards

As for stax and group slug, those typically make you a bigger target, so my recommendation is to avoid those.

Just a tip, I wouldn't run Propaganda like cards since they only serve to make attacking your planeswalkers more attractive. Sphere of Safety, Norn's Annex and/or cards like Magus of the Moat/Peacekeeper are much better.

April 14, 2017 1:08 p.m.

I'm familiar with stax, group slug, pillow fort, and what their intended purposes are.

Cool, thanks for the tip about Propaganda: I'll cut Ghostly Prison and Collective Restraint, too.

Great list! Thanks, Hacker!

Oh I was just thinking out loud lol xD and hey no problem.

A fun little card that I enjoyed in my superfriends deck was Mystic Barrier, since it shut all but one opponent from attacking your planeswalkers, and if you choose the player to your left or right that has fewer creatures, youre in a solid place.
