MH3 —Aug. 28, 2024

MH3 has blessed us with some new eldritch horrors, and I've slotted some into the deck. Obviously the updates aren't done - I've gotta get myself that juicy new Ulamog, but foils are quite expensive.

I'm thinking of dropping my stax package - which has kind of dropped down to just two cards (Winter Orb along with Clock of Omens to abuse it).

As always, any input, thoughts, or just +1's are welcome!

Sweet deck! I actually laughed out loud when I saw Deal Broker.

Soul of New Phyrexia + Nevinyrral's Disk is actually pretty crazy. 6 generic manna for an instant speed, one sided, repeatable board wipe is crazy.

my only suggestion would be maybe Urza's Incubator. Just over 50% of your creatures are eldrazi, so it could be worth while. Deceiver of Form could be worth while too. At the very worst it's a 7cmc 8/8 that gives you a scry every turn.

Deceiver of Form and Reality Smasher are definitely on my "to buy" list for this deck.

Urza's Incubator is something I have been considering. I'll have to see if a foil one is unreasonably priced.

I'm also definitely considering Cavern of Souls.

Imo Kozilek, the Great Distortion is the best commander, his abilities are insane and perfect for a deck packed with mana rocks.

Colorless hurts for removal, but it hurts for card draw even more. Picking up 4-6 cards on cast is nuts, and plays perfectly with the "dump a million rocks" plan. He also turns unneeded rocks into counterspells.

Kozilek's counterspell ability is also a mono-brown deck's ONLY hope against mass artifact destruction.

I have a mostly up-to-date kozilek list here, you might see some good stuff there

I definitely recommend a Salvaging Station package with Urza's Bauble, Mishra's Bauble, Phyrexian Furnace, Scrabbling Claws etc. The baubles cycle for free and graveyard hate is always useful. If you draw the station, you can draw cards whenever a creature dies which can go crazy.

Cheers

I recently acquired my copy of Kozilek, the Great Distortion, and I understand the need for card advantage in a deck full of rocks. I haven't gotten a chance to play him yet, but I can try playtesting him as the commander.

You think a Salvaging Station suite would be worth it? I have one and all the pieces to go with it, but I do not know what to take out. I have the infinite combo to go with it (Flayer Husk + Krark-Clan Ironworks + Salvaging Station ). Should I also include that? I don't want to remove any more creatures as I'm relatively light on them already.

Yeah I would've suggested cutting random duders like matter reshaper or bane of bala ged

temple bell is pretty awful IMO

loreseeker's stone is pretty much worse than the Station

explorer's scope is real bad (you could try Surveyor's Scope if you want to ramp lands)

Orbs of warding seems hella cuttable

Also Summoning Station is actually pretty great. Also that made me notice you're missing Voltaic Key and Clock of Omens, those are some great cards

Clock of Omens has always seem underpowered for a 4-mana slot in most decks I run it in. I usually end up cutting it. I have a copy but I always end up just having mana rocks to tap to use it. It's cool that it can tap itself to help pay for the cost, but without an infinite combo using it in here, I don't think it'll pull its weight.

Surveyor's Scope would be great if I can more Wastes, but I think I can cut it for a low-cost artifact.

Voltaic Key is a great card, and I have to put one in here when I get a chance. I agree that Summoning Station is great, but I don't have a copy of one unfortunately.

Temple Bell and Loreseeker's Stone I like, because they're decent at what they do. Loreseeker's draws me back up after ramping (much like Kozilek), and Temple Bell works much better than Howling Mine and has a good cost. But putting Kozilek into the commander slot might alleviate the need for those draw engines.

re: clock of omens: There are a lot of artifacts that don't care if they're tapped or untapped like equipment, crucible, mind's eye, etc, and you can tap artifact creatures too, so what you usually get is a more powerful voltaic key for 4 mana. It's really good. Also goes nuts with something like Precursor Golem, Myr Battlesphere and lets you break Winter Orb

re temple bell: This card has to activate twice to give you as many cards as a simple Divination... and each time you activate it, you give each opponent a card... it's a complete disaster, honestly.

Yeah, it's hard to find really good card advantage in colorless. Though Clock of Omens would allow me to abuse Howling Mine... I'll have to think about what to do with it. I also really like Winter Orb. I hope foils of it aren't too expensive.

So here's what I'm thinking so far:

Out: Temple Bell, Explorer's Scope, Loreseeker's Stone, Orbs of Warding, Pristine Talisman, Strionic Resonator, Myr Retriever.

In: Clock of Omens, Winter Orb, Salvaging Station, Scrabbling Claws, Voltaic Key, Mishra's Bauble, Kozilek's Channeler.

This will help lower the average CMC of the deck slightly, and give me access to Salvaging Station's shenanigans.

Edit: I was also considering Warping Wail, but I think with Kozilek's ability to counter spells that I don't really need a slot for it. What do you think?

I also need to find room for Deceiver of Form, Reality Smasher, and the new Emrakul.

@metalevolence: I'm curious, do you think Chromatic Sphere or Mox Diamond could find a slot to work with Salvaging Station?

July 12, 2016 2:21 a.m.

metalevolence says... #11

ye ye those are good changes

If you want more baubles, Conjurer's Bauble is better than chromatic star

mox diamond doesn't really have synergy with salvaging station but if you have one you should run it because sheer power level, especially if your commander is kozilek distortion

Warping wail and Spatial Contortion are both pretty good, up to you. (Yea contortion is a terrible lightning bolt but it still deals with lots of scary things for cheap)

Lhurgyof says... #12

Yeah, I have a diamond, so I'll have to cut a sub-par mana rock for it or something.

+1 from me

The MAJOR suggestion that i have is Silent Arbiter bc Kozilek, the Great Distortion has Menace, meaning he's basically unblockable on the battlefield and you can just swing in for major cmdr damage

July 22, 2016 3:15 a.m.

Lhurgyof says... #14

Thanks a lot.

I'll have to see if Silent Arbiter works out, since I also have a lot of other fatties. Though perhaps an equipment like Whispersilk Cloak would help more.

July 22, 2016 5:38 p.m.

kinggeorgeiii says... #15

I like Whispersilk Cloak and it works too!! just imo the Arbiter helps with overwhelming boardstates and can alter combat in your favor if you play it right

July 23, 2016 5:33 a.m.

Lhurgyof says... #16

True enough, I was only worried about playing it early game and having it hurt me late game when I have multiple creatures to attack with. But I still need to do some more playtesting.

Cloudpost and Glimmerpost seem pretty underwhelming, even when you are able to find both in a single game. How about Scorched Ruins and Blasted Landscape instead?

Love the deck! +1

July 25, 2016 10:12 a.m.

Lhurgyof says... #18

Scorched Ruins is good, but I think I'll put in Blinkmoth Well in place of the other, since I can use it to tap down my Winter Orb.

Thanks man!

Would Ulamog ceaseless hunger be a better commander?

April 4, 2018 10:56 p.m.

Lhurgyof says... #20

I ran Ulamog for a while, but the card advantage that Kozilek gives me seems a bit better.

I usually keep a hand full of lands and mana rocks, cast Kozilek, then fill up my hand.

Plus he has some good built in protection: Since very few colorless cards give access to counterspells.

April 4, 2018 11:09 p.m.

I love the idea of this deck, though I did have a couple questions. Have you considered Rings of Brighthearth for it? It's a costly card and it's not exactly a mana rock, but it's got some wacky synergy with utility effects and is even part of an infinite mana combo (Deserted Temple + Rings of Brighthearth + Scorched Ruins ). Strionic Resonator is another possibly useful tool that can double triggered abilities, such as Annihilator, Ulamog's mill effect, and even Emrakul's turn steal. Winding Canyons is an older land, but if you're producing a lot of extra mana it can't hurt to give your creatures Flash. Also, what are your thoughts on the new card Chromatic Orrery?

Lhurgyof

I agree with the above comment.

Rings of Brighthearth+ Basalt = Infinite Mana, + top = Draw and cast your entire deck. With each piece helpful on it's own, I see no reason not to include it aside from room.

Rings + Voltaic Key + Everflowing Chalice making 4 mana = Infinite mana

Another good card is Mystic Forge, which in conjunction with Top and Ugin Ineffible lets you draw your entire deck. Activate top to draw, placing top on the deck. Mystic forge allows you to cast top and Ugin makes that cost free. In an artifact heavy deck, I think this can greatly benefit you. Would love your thoughts.

Maybe someone already pointed that out but Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is banned in EDH (both as commander and as card).
