I Decided to splash G for Thragtusk and Deathrite Shaman, because paying a single G for Thragtusk is just unfair
Initial Playtesting
twopoets, 12 years ago
First attempts to pull this off vs fast greenstuff went pretty well. If I could come out of the gate strong I won. I feel like now the biggest thing to work on is the correct pitch choices on looting. I felt like cyclonic rift was a maybe choice, but it really proved to be pretty amazing as a way out late game vs hordes. I feel like I need to do some more playing with it to find it's weakest points.

I decided to cut Liliana of the Veil, at least until Gatecrash is released. The mana base isn't quite stable enough to support the BB in her cost. I've also decided on a more diverse range of control, as opposed to a lot of four-of sweep and removal effects. Augur of Bolas provides a blocker against early aggressive creatures, like Gravecrawler and Ash Zealot, while allowing me to dig for sweep or draw effects, as needed. Snapcaster Mage somewhat compensates for the lighter sweep package by allowing me to recast Supreme Verdict, although Azorius Charm is not a bad play either. Finally, since this version is more instant and sorcery-heavy than the last (22 in total), I added Runechanter's Pike as a one of finisher, to pair with a vampire or spirit post-sweep. The deck needs two more Jace, Architect of Thought, but I'm waiting for the price to go down or a trade to become available. At that point, I'll either cut the Syncopates from the main board for it or replace the 3x Think Twice with Jace and an extra Forbidden Alchemy.

4th at FNM, 1 loss against a Blue/White Control deck, I'm blaming the loss on inappropriate sideboarding on my part but will attempt to solve in my next match.

My records are not too impressive so far First week FNM 2-1-1 Lost to a Boros aggro (should have won that one...) And I drew with my friend playing esper control because we were already in time after the first game. Second week 2-2 Lost to my friends bant control 1-2 it was a good game tho. Played a red black aggro and a G/W aggro and lost to a G/B zombies because of land issues.
put more midrange
nitroxqc, 12 years ago
-4 Strangleroot: because its more aggro and less mid range but it can be difficult to get 2 green at the beginning +1 Thalia: is a good card value why not pu one more anyway i need more cost 2 creature and control deck are very strong on the meta right now +1 Healer centaure: more heal to bounce more heal to get early versus aggro/a good blocker too +1 Forest you need your 24 lands you really dont want to miss one. +1 Thragtusk : he have so much value and I prefrer to play this deck more midrange so why not -1 Wolfir Silverheart : is a good card too but it cost 2 green and i really prefer too put some archangel +2 Sublime archangel: they are crazy and in deck like midrange they make every creature who attack alone very strong -1 Rancor: I think 3 rancor is good in late game you really don't want to topm deck rancor when you need creature and I have thalia main so I don't want too much sorcery or enchantement or instant +1 Selesnya charm: it offert a lot of possibily and responce just a great card
Major Overhaul
rkempston, 12 years ago
Been playing around with the deck for awhile and finally got my hands on a couple doubling seasons. The last game i played was a 3vs3 with some friends. We were losing very badly, in three turns we went from losing to dominating, First i pulled doubling season and placed it on the field, At the time all i had was 2 saprolngs and a Thallid Shell dweller with three spore counters on him. The next turn i drew myocloth and this is when things got interesting, i pulled the three pore tokens off my shell dweller sacrificed the saproling and now had a myocloth with +16 +16 (Devour 2 and Doubling Season) So every turn after that i was getting 32 Saprolings, and wouldnt you know it the next turn i played coat of arms. so i was running with Somewhere around 64 +64 +64s. I wiped out the entire team in one turn.Tournament at Cab Comics - 11/9/12

Small turn-out this week (15, IIRC). First, I live in a college town and it was Veterans Day weekend, so a lot of people left town. Second, a snowstorm was blowing into town and, figuring how rainy/sleety is was Friday, some people may not have wanted to make the trek to the game shop. Third, our competitor game shop (and lessor of the two in town, based on skill) just opened up a new location a quarter-mile down the road. But once they inevitably fail in their new location (since they only survived at their old location due to most of its customers living in the surrounding neighborhood and not having vehicles) we'll get our turf back soon enough.
Whatever, though.
First round, I played against a mono-Black Exalted/Control deck. It had things like Duty-Bound Dead, Vampire Nighthawk, Mutilate, Murder, and such spells. Being mono-Black, though, it's a bit-slow for Standard's meta right now. In the first game, I went first with a tapped shock-land, he dropped a Duty-Bound Dead, I cast Farseek, he dropped another and swung for 2, I dropped an Azorius Keyrune, he dropped a Nighthawk and swung again for 2, then I cast Supreme Verdict. That was more-or-less game-over at that point.
Second game, he managed to kill off one of my Drogskol Reavers with Murder and Sigarda, Host of Herons with Mutilate, but top-decking Sphinx's Revelation and casting it for, like, 6 gave me 2 Angel of Serenity. That was all she wrote.
Second round, I threw it down against G/W Humans. In the first game, he went first with Champion of the Parish followed by Mayor of Avabruck Flip. Thankfully, I drew a Farseek (my other option was playing a Centaur Healer on the following turn) and prevented the Mayor from flipping over. On my next turn (after he dropped Thalia, Guardian of Thraben) I top-decked Terminus and my creatures were just bigger from that point forward.
Second game, he went first and killed me before I could even cast Supreme Verdict. Mullied down to 6, though, and admittedly should've gone to 5.
Third game, I grabbed the game by the balls and board-wiped twice in 2 turns. From there, Sigarda, Host of Herons and a pair of Centaur Healers held off the remainders and I won handily.
Third round, I was pitted against U/W Humans. It's cool, though. My deck was designed and built to win against Aggro decks without needing to side-board. Have you seen my main-board? Game 1 was decided by a top-decked Terminus followed by Drogskol Reaver + pump from Selesnya Charm. People might bitch about me "getting lucky with Terminus," but I don't care. I put it in my deck for that purpose; it's supposed to be top-decked.
Game 2, he landed a Thalia on the play and pushed back my Farseek. Had he not played Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, he would've been eating a turn-4 Angel of Serenity followed by a Drogskol Reaver. My tempo got thrown off and he showed me his starting hand. It was Thalia, 2 Champion of the Parish, a Knight of Glory, a Plains, a Glacial Fortress, and a Moorland Haunt. GROSS.
Game 3, though, was greatly in my favor. Going first, I could cast Farseek before Thalia landed, which then lets me still play Azorius Keyrune on my third turn. He cast Nevermore and named "Thragtusk," but I had none in my hand. Instead, I was sitting on two Restoration Angels and a Sphinx's Revelation. After some awesome flash-blocking, I cast Sphinx's Revelation for 4 or 5 and drew 3 Thagtusks ("Damnit..."), a land ("Oh, come on...") and my one side-boarded Planar Cleansing (".... That'll work."). Untap, cast Planar Cleansing, kill everything (including Nevermore), then untap next turn and cast 2 Thagtusks. When the third came out a turn later and he didn't have any creatures, he scooped.
Round 4 was a split into Top-8 because I was more concerned with food at that point than winning a pointless round.
Top 8. I played against Rakdos Aggro. I saw earlier that night that he was playing with Ring of Valkos in his deck and was finally glad that somebody realized how good that card actually is. And it kicked my ass. Not "to-the-point-of-losing" kind-of "kicked-my-ass", but it was certainly powerful. In the first game, I had two Angel of Serenity exiling each other and my opponent's Chaos Imps, or whatever, then blocking, casting the other Angel, and resetting the board. It wasn't until I drew a Drogskol Reaver that I finally got the upper hand and eventually won with more life than I started with.
For the second game, he had to mulligan down to 5 and missed his second land-drop for a turn. I sped ahead with Farseek and landed a Drogskol Reaver (which quickly met its demise from Murder), a Thagtusk (which got double-Pillar of Flame'd), and a Restoration Angel (which promptly got his by Auger Spree). Apparently, he kept a hand of 4 removal spells and 1 land. Oh well. When both players are in top-deck mode, except one player has 3 lands and the other has 8, the game ends quickly. I drew a Sphinx's Revelation, he played a land and cast Chandra, the Firebrand, I responded with Sphinx's Revelation for 6, and then untapped, played a land, and cast 2 Thragtusks at once. To my surprise, he pinged me with Chandra and cast Rakdos, Lord of Riots. I was a bit intimidated (especially once you realize that Rakdos can let him play his bigger threats), but top-decking a Selesnya Charm, of all things, led to a quick win.
Top 4 prize-split. Because it was snowing and we were all hungry, cranky, and wanted to play Halo 4. Round score: 4-0-1. Game score: 8-2 (9-3-1. if you count the round split). Placement after Top 8 - First place.

FNM Report #2
BuLLZ3Y3, 12 years ago
This tournament was great. Their were 27 people there tonight (Still not enough for a cut to top 8, so just standings at the end of rounds for prize distribution) and I played a wide variety of decks. Lets get right into things.
Place: 2nd
Standings: 4-1 (9-3)
Winnings: 26 dollars cash (I could have had 37 in store credit, but a buddy of mine offered to sell me a Jace, Architect of Thought for $25.
Round 1: Selesnya Aggro
This game was against a newer player, who was piloting a fairly straightforward G/W beatdown deck. Some of the major cards were things like Silverblade Paladin, Wolfir Avenger, Restoration Angel, Wolfir Silverheart, and my personal favorite, the ever so spicy Angel of Jubilation. I could tell he was pretty new because he was doing most of his things during his pre-combat main phase, which allowed me to abuse some situations with my own Restoration Angels and create more favorable blocking situations or even blocking blow-outs. Angel + Thragtusk eventually won both games, with very little planeswalker action.
1-0
Round 2: Naya Aggro
This player seemed to be more seasoned then the previous player, but he certainly wasn't a pro. A critical misplay during one of our games cost him a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and left my Jace, Architect of Thought still alive.
Game one went pretty smoothly, with a timely Terminus wiping his overextended board, leaving him with no cards in hand, and myself with five and a planeswalker on board. The game was soon sealed up after that.
The second game was a little rougher, with his Thalia, Guardian of Thraben messing up my early Farseeks and delaying any board wipes. I cast a Supreme Verdict on turn 5, and we both durdled for a little bit. Eventually we came down to this board position:
I have six mana open with a Jace, Architect of Thought at 2 loyalty counters and 3 cards in hand (One of which is a Restoration Angel I plan on using to block the incoming swing at Jace). My opponent has 5 lands, one of which is a Slayers' Stronghold, an Avacyn's Pilgrim and a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
My opponent declares his Thalia attacking my Jace. I flash in the Angel before blockers, declare it as a blocker, and pass priority. He goes into the tank, looking at his hand quite intently. He seems to get an epiphany, smirks slightly, and casts Divine Deflection, tapping three mana but never declaring the value of X. He then moves to resolve the whole combat step, assuming his Deflection is going to resolve the way he suspects it to. I look at him and point out that Thalia makes his spell cost one more, and it thus won't have the desired effect of killing my Jace. I don't want to be a dick about it and force him to keep the decision, but my opponent graciously owns his mistake, putting my Jace at one, his Thalia dead, and my way to victory wrapped up.
2-0
Round 3: 4 Color Combo Durdle (R/U/G/B)
This was a fun deck against an equally fun opponent. I was now in the bracket of regular FNM grinders and frequent PTQ/SCG Open attendee's. Also, my opponent walks with a badass cane due to a work injury. Props to him for being so much cooler than most other people (myself included). The basic idea of his deck is to use Deadeye Navigator, Zealous Conscripts and Gilded Lotus to make infinite mana, then infinitely steal your entire board (Including your lands) and then kill you with that board state. He can also give all of his creatures haste, just as a coincidence. I never got to see this combo in game against him, but I did sit next to him and watch him perform the combo, which included ultimating a Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, stealing his opponents entire field in response, using his opponents Ajani, Caller of the Pride to make 22 2/2 cats, give them all haste, and swing for 44 damage.
Game one was pretty rough for me, getting behind on lands by missing my 5th and 6th land drop (pretty important turns for control I hear) and getting destroyed by Thragtusks and Huntmaster of the Fells Flip.
Game two was the opposite, with my opponent getting somewhat behind and then recovering with Gilded Lotus. However, I went to Oblivion Ring his Lotus, which he Cyclonic Rift at the end of my turn. I could have Dissipated that play, but I felt that it was better to leave the counter for something else, which proved correct. He then untapped and attempted to resolve Vraska the Unseen, which I hastily countered. The game quickly ended from there, with me picking up a win.
As an aside, Vraska completely wrecks control, which is trying to win with as little as possible. Control really only wants one or two major permanents (Like a planeswalker and a Thragtusk), and Vraska deals with all of those things easily. On top of that, control doesn't have a good way to interact with her, short of countering, physically killing her, or casting Oblivion Ring or Detention Sphere.
Game three was pretty good, but I was able to race him due to a lack of creatures on his part. He drew lots of sweet spells like Izzet Charm and Dreadbore, but those don't do much against Thragtusk and Restoration Angel.
3-0
Round 4: Junk Planeswalkers
This match was against the same friend who I played against last week. His deck is pretty much the same, although he added Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker to his sideboard for decks just like mine. Oh, that seems fair.
Game one was pretty fast, with two quick Sorin, Lord of Innistrad emblems with a double cast of Lingering Souls. Taking 15 hurt pretty badly. Into the sideboard we went.
Game two was a little longer, but when he had a second Garruk, Primal Hunter to replace the first one, and a Vraska the Unseen to blow up my Angel of Serenity, I scooped and extended my hand. I was hungry, so I took the extra time I had in between this round and the next to order a pizza.
3-1
Round 5: B/R Zombies
I was fairly terrified going into this match. I had not tested against B/R Zombies yet, and while I know I had a good match up with Centaur Healer, Restoration Angel and Thragtusk, I wasn't sure if I would be able to survive long enough to be casting those things. Plus, if I lost here, I wouldn't finish high enough to win anything.
Game one was your typical zombie opening, except he didn't have a one drop for turn one. I was able to gain some life back, but eventually he beat through my blockers and killed me. Hopefully the post board match up favored me more.
Game two was quite good, with me casting several Thragtusk and attacking him to a low life total, and my opponent beating back through that extra life to get me fairly low. Eventually we have a pretty close board, with my field containing a tapped Thragtusk and a tapped Restoration Angel (I had just attacked him to 4) and my opponent having one Falkenrath Aristocrat. He attacks with the aristocrat, dropping me to 9. He then sacrifices the vampire to itself and casts Brimestone Volley for 5, dropping me to 4. He taps one black and then casts Bump in the Night, which totally threw me for a second. However, I have six untapped lands, so I casually tap out for a Sphinx's Revelation for six, which puts me 1 life above what he can deal to me, letting me untap and swing for lethal next turn.
Game three was also a good match, with myself staying around a comfortable 16 life, while I whacked away at my opponent with a Thragtusk, dropping his life total very quickly. He responds with his own attacks (And a few chumps from some Diregraf Ghouls) and brings me back to 9. Eventually, time in the rounds are called, and my opponent passes the turn, saying my turn can be turn 0. I draw my card for the turn, and see that it's a Restoration Angel, with the rest of my hand being Selesnya Charm and Terminus. I immediately declare my attack step, turning the Thragtusk sideways and sending it into the red zone. He blocks with his Olivia Voldaren with no available mana for any pings. I use the Sylvan Might mode of Selesnya Charm, killing his Olivia, saving my Thragtusk, and getting through 4 points of damage, bringing him down to 3. I pass the turn with mana up to play Restoration Angel.
My opponent draws his card for the turn, which he plays as his seventh land, and then swings with his two Geralf's Messanger, both of which are 3/2's still. I take the damage, and he moves to his second main phase, in which he casts a Bonfire of the Damned for exactly 3, which would kill me. (Keep in mind that this is turn 1 in the five turns after time has been called) I cast the Angel in my hand, Cloudshifting my Thragtusk, thus gaining 5 life and making a beast. My opponent extended his hand and I won.
4-1
I am very happy with the way this tournament worked out. I am also exceptionally happy with my games against the B/R Zombie deck. I feel that deck is one of the fastest in the format, with an extreme amount of reach through burn spells, and my deck handled it post board just fine. There were never any times that I felt I absolutely needed to draw more lifegain, as I had it in my opening hand pretty regularly. Centaur Healer, Restoration Angel, and Thragtusk make that match up very winnable, even if it requires you to board a little bit more to do so.
Keep telling me what you guys think, and hopefully I'll keep doing well in tournaments!

Basic exalted deck.

Pretty much lost the whole night. I won one against a control/aggro hybrid deck that couldn't draw its win condition fast enough. I really liked the combination of using Jarad's Orders with getting a Gravecrawler and Lotleth Troll out. The only problem I had all night seemed to be insufficient mana draw.
I'm going to tweak this down to 60 cards with the 25 mana present and see if that helps. Spent some time and did some tweaking. List of changes is below. One change I did not make was removing the 4x Overgrown Tomb and replace them with 4x Swamp. I figure that my main strategy requires at least 2x green mana, so that change might not be so good.
Figuring with the new addition of Liliana of the Dark Realms that I'll use a Jarad's Orders to pull a Liliana of the Dark Realms first to use her +1, then hope for another to get the Lotleth Troll out. The Corpsejack Menace would be a bonus to have out, but I don't think that will get on the board quickly enough to cause as big of a steamroll.
Removed:
4x Slitherhead
2x Vraska the Unseen
1x Disciple of Bolas
2x Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
Added:
2x Liliana of the Dark Realms
2x Corpsejack Menace

Edited the deck some for last night's FNM. Finished 7th out of 19 with it. Pretty proud of it, but I know it could still use some work.
1st Round- Won 2-0 against a W/B exalted deck. I won by keeping the field cleared with Dreadbore, and Tragic Slip, allowing me to attack with everything unchecked.
2nd Round- Won 2-0 against a Gruul mana ramp/overrun deck. Managed to outrun the guy's deck and after I got out Rakdos, Lord of Riots I pretty much had the game in the bag.
3rd Round- Lost 2-0 against a mono white token deck. I ended up getting mana flooded both games, and couldn't do anything.
4th Round- Lost 2-1 against a mono red burn deck. Again got mana flooded the 2nd and 3rd games.
5th Round- Won 2-1 against a R/B Rakdos deck. I ended up playing almost against a mirror image of my deck. Kept his field cleared with removal, and swung with all my unleashed creatures to win it.
Overall I like what the deck done, but would like to see it do better. As always suggestions and +1's are welcome.

pelolep, 12 years ago
Added Golgari Charm to the sideboard, because it does part of the job of both Naturalize and Faith's Reward, as well as utterly destroying 1/1 tokens. Played the deck at FNM, and found that many games came down to tutoring for fogs and more tutors. To this end, I've decided to add a single Diabolic Revelation (even though I did, in an earlier comment, say it wouldn't be worth it) so that, flashing back Increasing Ambition late game, I can tutor for a Fog and Diabolic Revelation, then use the it to tutor for more fogs and my win conditions that I wouldn't have been able to tutor for otherwise. I've also debated on adding Clinging Mists (just in case the deck wasn't enough like Turbofog already) in order to make certain I don't run out of "prevent combat damage" effects.
Making a few more changes
thedemonsday, 12 years ago
After a week of play I think it is time I make a few changes.
-2 Thundermaw Hellkite and +2 Chandra, the Firebrand - Honestly I really like this change. Her -2 ability is devastating with a morbid Brimstone Volley or Essence Harvest and her +1 decent for killing off tokens or poking my opponent if anything. Also I have had a hard time getting my hands on the hellkites.
These next few are simply speculation.
-2 Faithless Looting? - I am thinking about taking these out. Sometimes they help but usually they are just a pain to play. If I did get rid of them I would 'prolly add +1 Sign in Blood and +1 Searing Spear. that or I could stand to add more creatures.
+? Falkenrath Noble? - With heartless he becomes a 1/1 flying Blood Artist and I kill a lot of litt creatures with my burn spells.

FNM
Fennova, 12 years ago
After extensive research and playtesting i decided to run this at FNM. I was Baffled at how well i did. Ending with a nice 3-0-1.
Match 1.
Golgari vs Rakdos
Game 1.
I know this kid, he comes every Friday and i've seen him progress his deckbuilding immensely. But ageinst a 24/24 Hydra and twin Jacks it wasn't very fair.
Game 2.
Black Mana screwed, he beat me down with a hilariously pumped Goblin Arsonist
Game 3.
Hydra and Jack for the win, with some Saprolings for funsieys 2-0-1
Match 2
Golgari vs Some M13 based deck (new kid i felt horrible that he had the game with me, it was kinda unfair)
Game 1.
He didn't stand a chance :(
Game 2.
Let my Hydra get so big that the dice covered the card 144/144 i think, was funny cause i killed him with saprolings instead, we both laughed. taught him afew things about his deck and some ideas he could use. 2-0-0
Match 3. (currently 2-0-0 in matches and 4-0-1 in games)
Golgari vs Monored speedfreak
Game 1.
Wow this was intense, he won this on with a well placed Zealous Conscripts on my 12/12 hydra.
Game 2.
Hydra and twin Jacks for the win
Game 3.
Hydra, Jacks, Vampire Nighthawk and saprolings for a final assault. It was soooooo close i was at 3 after he swung out, i had played a Fungal Sprouting with a 6/6 hydra so i chump blocked most of his grounders and then nuked him next turn, nighthawk saved the day with his lifelink as i would have died.
Match 4. (currently 3-0-0 matches and 6-0-2 games)
Golgari vs Reanimator angels
Game 1.
This guy was a serious DBAG. He had this superiority complex like he owned WOTC. I tromped on him with twin hydras and twin jacks.
Game 2.
No chance with so few creatures... was irked.
Game 3.
Had him on the ropes with a 7/7 hydra and a Jack then he Unburial Rites an Angel of Serenity and clears my board, hits me with a Thragtusk then hard casts another Angel to clear me again for game... Very Disappointing..

Couple minor changes with the release of RTR:
-1xDiabolic Tutor and -1xRise from the Grave - I really wasn't excited when I pulled those. In their place I added in 2xNecropolis Regent.
I have also switched the Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet (not the best bomb anymore since Necropolis Regent) with one more Vampire Nocturnus he's just a good card to have in here.

jbussard, 12 years ago
Totally changed the direction for this deck. No longer is it a flood the field machine, but more of a combo, power-up deck. Added in quite a few cards, including Keyrune's, and Corpsejack Menace, and also added Rootborn Defenses to help protect.
UNDEFEATED!!! (5-0)
Phat_Shadow, 12 years ago
So I was struggling with the idea of taking out 3xDiregraf Ghoul for 3xFalkenrath Noble but I made the switch and I'm SOOOO glad I did. I went undefeated in a FNM tourny tonight and earned $120 to go towards a gatecrash booster box! I don't believe that I would've done as well if I would've kept it the way it was. Those falkenrath nobles were just enough to make the cut in some games.
FYI I never had to use the sideboard in the tourny either. It really doesn't do me much good as it is now but maybe there will be some good cards for it in the future.

So, I've tested the deck at a few FNMs before I could actually make a judgement call to see if it was good. So, in three out of the 6 FNMs I've placed 1st. and the other three, two of them I came in 3rd, and 1 of them 4th. So... The deck works REALLY well. I enjoy it.
