Changes for consistency

Taida, 1 month ago

Made some small adjustments. Increased Aria of Flame to 4 copies, as it is true that being the main piece of the deck it would be recommended to have all the possible copies. For it I took out one copy of Thirsting Roots and Invoke Calamity, the latter mainly as it is quite color-intensive.

May Update Log

JBTomero, 1 month ago

  • Added Open the Way, cutting Hunting Wilds. With my collection of nonbasic lands lying in wait, the value floor would be roughly the same as Hunting Wilds but with the potential for huge gains.

  • Added Pir's Whim, cutting Embrace the Unknown. Another Field of the Dead ramp-tutor with a little artifact/enchantment removal for free. Even better in multiplayer. Embrace the Unknown probably didn't get its fair shake, but it feels like a dream scenario card since the Retrace didn't come up as often as I'd hoped.

  • Added Sylvan Scrying, cutting Lair of the Hydra. My nonbasic collection has become such a toolbox that this 2cmc tutor has grown into an auto-include. I'm replacing a land since 2 mana to "cycle" into a land satisfies a land slot. Lair of the Hydra ran afoul of my "No Lightning Rods" rule and either I was too meek to activate it, was punished when I did, or if I had ridiculous amounts of mana I was casting Hazezon instead of risking it all on this. Deep in my gut it was not a card I was happy to see, so it ended up being worse than a forest.

Game changer list

Telph, 1 month ago

I removed 3 game changers: vampiric tutor, Rhystic study, and enlightened tutor. This was an attempt to make it a bracket 3 deck with only 3 game changers. With the first update to the game changer list, a lot of tools this deck needs to function are now on the game changer list, and now I have no intention of changing it further. I'm still a fan of removing the tutors though.

Jumping brackets v1

shadowmoses514, 1 month ago

I think this deck hovers somewhere between bracket 2 and bracket 3. I'd like this to instead be def bracket 3, hovering 3 and 4. So here's a few updates to try to trim cards that seem crazy low in power.

-1 Crux of Fate +1 Will of the Abzan: Cutting a mass board wipe in order to get "the best" creature they have killed. Or at least the strongest one. Also this can be an additional recursion spell, and can do both when Braids is out. Plus, it's one mana cheaper, so tighter curve.

-1 Diabolic Tutor +1 Grim Tutor: Again, nodding to the lowered curve. Just upping the overall power of the deck by playing more A+ and S class cards instead of C or D class cards

-1 Treacherous Blessings +1 Demonic Tutor: Again, just adding S class cards.

-1 Reliquary Tower +1 Phyrexian Tower: Another A+ class card. Reliquary Tower sounds cool and cute in theory, but I think it's really a crutch card. It comes up a lot less often than it would seem.

-1 Solemn Simulacrum +1 Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip: Have to cut pet cards in order to get this deck to power, and even though I love Sad Robot, his time has come. Tergrid is a card that I keep going back and forth with, but the real truth is this card puts in the work, and there is a lot of forced sac effects in the deck with Smokestack, Braids, Cabal Minion, Diabolic Edict etc etc. This card is a G.C. for a reason, and my list is better for having it.

-1 Swamp +1 Dark Ritual: the 10% of games where I have t1 dark ritual into t1 Braids will be nice, and beyond that I'm just powering up the deck. It'll obviously suck to draw this late game, but that's variance; similar to drawing Sol Ring late game. I also think the lowered curve overall makes it reasonable to cut a land.

-1 Tragic Slip +1 Worthy Cost: I'm not sure if this is an upgrade or a side grade. Its very uncommon that I ever want the normal version of tragic slip, so I'm usually waiting until I can engineer the morbid trigger. Either on someone else's combat step, or after resolving my Braids trigger. As a result, I think Worthy Cost makes the cut as single target removal, that still gets around indestructible, and can now also hit P.W.'s if that's ever relevant. I'm sacrificing the speed of the effect, but more or less keeping the cost intact.

-1 Erebos, Bleak-Hearted +1 Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER  Flip: I hate the FF cards, and a modest amount of of U.B. cards, but this one is particularly good as an enabler. The front side is already a pretty strong Blood Artist, and if I can flip him, then I get a blood artist EMBLEM stapled to a weak Reprocess.

Added Land Diversity

Arsienic, 1 month ago

Originally only slapped this deck together only thinking of the creatures (cus obviously) and actually just ignored the lands. While I still think the deck fits bracket 1 very well with the 32 land count, increasing the number to 35 will only add to its consistency. Having proper lands isn't ground breaking, but deff a nice add. In playing casually I found that I haven't actually ever run into being mana screwed or having wrong colors, enough of the deck produces enough mana to keep things coming. ESSPECIALLY IN BRACKET 1. for groups playing in bracket 1, and looking to keep this deck on the cheaper end i still think all basics is fine.

Temur’s Roar

DatRamblingMan, 1 month ago

With Tarkir coming out, I’ve been trying some new leaders for old decks, and Temur’s one that’s getting a new look. Eshki seems like an interesting choice, though I’m not sure if she lends herself more to a “4 power matters” build as opposed to more of a tempo deck. I swapped out Goblin Bombardment, Delver of Secrets, and Hexdrinker for Bonecrusher Giant, Surrak Elusive Hunter, and Temur Battlecrier to add a few more 4 power options to the deck. I’m going to see how it runs, and decide whether I like the changes or if I go back to Yasova taking the wheel.

Mana Crypt and Emrakul Aeons Torn

sonalexander, 1 month ago

Why do I have these 2 cards listed in the Maybe Board? Well, it's simple. Mana Crypt was in there until the recent banning, replaced by Thought Vessel, and Emrakul would replace the other Emrakul I have in there now if she was legal. I have them in the maybe board as an auto swap in as soon as one or both become unbanned in the future. Can anyone explain to me WHY Emrakul is banned in 2025? It seriously makes no sense to me.

I absolute HATE Calamity of the Titans

sonalexander, 1 month ago

This card seems good in theory, but let me tell you. 98/100 times I see this card, it's a completely dead draw. in all of those times, it would completely screw ME over if I cast it. It's such a niche case that I would ever actually cast this, that I am actively looking for something to replace it with. I think i will replace it with an Akroma's Memorial when I pick one up, but until then, please note, this card is not great.

Pretty happy with the Deck's performance tonight. I should have probably taken a mulligan on a couple of the hands to hope for better, but who knows, it could have been worse. I think I could have used some tutoring cards to help with consistency, and more card draw wouldn't hurt. I sure miss Defiant Strike. but, I picked up copies of Brightglass Gearhulk and Divine Resilience to try out. Tutor for the Venerated Rotpriest and target as many creatures as I can! Lets gO!!!

End of an era...

NonetheWeisser, 1 month ago

This is the final and most optimal build i have come up with. After years of testing, this deck netted us a 69% Win Rate at its best. Not bad if I do say so myself. If anything ever changes or new cards are released, I may come back to this. In the meantime, I am currently building a They Came From the Swap V2...stay tuned...;)

Tiny May 2025 Update

EscapingBurger, 1 month ago

In: Plea for Guidance

Out: Mystical Tutor

I took the "budget" tag off this deck a bit ago, as it's accumulated some decently expensive cards by now, but I still very much build with a budget mentality. Mystical Tutor was here because I opened one and had nowhere better to put it, but now I do (A Target-Rich Environment). I always intended for an enchantment tutor in this slot, to find some of Oloro's major win conditions like Exquisite Blood/Sanguine Bond or Test of Endurance. I still don't have an Idyllic Tutor or Enlightened Tutor, but Plea for Guidance was cheap and can find two enchantments. It's definitely clunkier, but worth a try for now.
