Maybeboard

Everyone's Invited

This is one of those cards that I saw and immediately wanted to build a deck around, though it took a while to get here. Hinata's cost-reduction ability makes a number of otherwise fair cards kind of obscene, and the deck is largely designed to take advantage of that. Spells like Curse of the Swine and Heliod's Intervention basically allow you to ignore X and just target everything. Magma Opus costs two mana as long as you spread the damage around, and Baral's Expertise effectively gains you mana. Even regular stuff like Negate comes in at a meaningful discount.

The main goal is to keep disrupting your opponents' boards with cheap multitarget spells, while building incremental value through things like Monastery Mentor and Voracious Bibliophile. Note that cards that care about mana value, like Deekah, Fractal Theorist and Zaffai, Thunder Conductor, count the full value of the spell before Hinata's discount, which is fun. Victory can come through tokens and such generated off spell triggers, building up to a big burn spell like Crackle with Power, or just keeping the path clear for Hinata to get in enough commander damage.

Keeping Hinata alive is essential, so there are a number of ways to do that. Aside from the obvious stuff like Swiftfoot Boots, you can duck out (at a discount) with Ghostly Flicker or March of Swirling Mist, or just cast a cheap counterspell. Note that Hinata makes your opponents' targeted removal a bit more expensive, too. Worst case, Battlefield Thaumaturge is there as a backup--or to make the math on Crackle with Power a little better--but note that it does only work on creatures.

Improvements

This deck has been harder to build than most I've made, and I still very much consider it a work in progress. I don't have much experience with spellslinger decks, so getting the right ratio of spells to payoffs and everything else has been tricky. It's currently in a state where I'm comfortable sharing it, though I expect to refine it considerably as I go. Some thoughts on future changes:

  • I need to solidify the win conditions, and should make pick one to focus on rather that having them spread out. I need to decide whether the creature payoffs are worth it, or if I should just make room for more spells.
  • I'm not sure about cards like Spellheart Chimera and Rise from the Tides that care about instants and sorceries in the graveyard. These can take time to set up, and I think I'd rather focus on getting things back from the graveyard intsead.
  • I could probably use even more protection for Hinata.
  • There are a number of other cards I have my eyes on, including plenty more multitarget X spells, as well as Arcane Lighthouse to get past Lightning Greaves and the like. I also want a Willbreaker, which could be very mean in this deck.
