Sideboard

Welcome to my Jeskai deck tech, or ''Jacekai'' as some like to call it! I play magic somewhat competitively so my deck will always evolve following meta trends, the list you see right now is the list I'm running at the moment. You can find precisions on the builds I've ran at previous events in the ''Previous Events Versions'' update section.

Deck Tech

The creatures

  • 4x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy   : This little fellow is the main reason Jeskai is back on stage! The first side of Jace fixes two of Jeskai's biggest problems, the specific spells and the bad mana. Starting a game of magic with too much Lightning Strikes and no answers to Courser of Kruphix or Siege Rhino sometimes simply meant game over, with Jace however you can now loot away cards for more relevant ones (also worth mentionning that you're fueling Dig Through Time at the same time). Looting also prevents mana screw, mana flood, and optimizes the mana for the kind of curve your hand has. The little Jace is powerful but he also includes a lot of decision making which can be difficult at first, take your time and think ahead like a real telepath!
Jace, Telepath Unbound   is the icing on the cake really. His +1 is usually defensive but it can also be aggressive to push through otherwise bad attacks, his -3 is card advantage town, it's usually used to remove creatures and sometimes used to close games with ''flashbacked'' burn. Oh and forget about his ultimate, just use more -3s!

  • 4x Soulfire Grand Master : An early drop that has lifelink and gives lifelink to the burn spells calls for pretty good defense against red decks, but it also has a powerful end game loop which makes it a very versatile creature. Soulfire creates a good life cushion to work with any deck it faces.

  • 4x Mantis Rider : Aggressive, defensive, evasive, tempo, that card is the deck's core.

  • 3x Goblin Rabblemaster : Rabblemaster has been present in Jeskai for a long time and like always it can still run away with games if left unanswered.

  • 2x Stormbreath Dragon : Other contenders for the spot are Dragonlord Ojutai and Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker. With the Abzan Hangarback lists gaining a lot of popularity I think Stormbreath Dragon is the better option right now since it can safely block Fleecemane Lion, Anafenza, the Foremost and Siege Rhino while blanking Abzan Charm and Dromoka's Command .

  • The Removal

  • 4x Lightning Strike : Numbers vary from 3-4 usually for more or less Wild Slash .

  • 2x Wild Slash : Gives the deck incredible 1st and 2nd turn tempo against aggressive strategies. Numbers vary from 0 to 4 depending on the speed of the format.

  • 2x Valorous Stance : Killing a 4 mana threat with a 2 mana instant removal is incredible and giving indestructible also comes in handy against more removal oriented strategies.

  • 1x Jeskai Charm : A hard spell to play in the deck but very rewarding. Choosing whether to put a creature on top of a library or keeping it to deal 4 damage is never easy, so is choosing the right moment and right creature to put on top. The charm is a very good answer to an Darksteel Citadel + Ensoul Artifact and also good for delaying Hangarback Walker, however it's quite bad against other creatures such as Siege Rhino, Den Protector and Nissa, Vastwood Seer  , use it wisely!

  • 2x Roast : I've upped the nuber of maindeck roasts to two and have never looked back. Roast gives an additional answer to big stuff while not being completely dead (like Valorous Stance vs a Fleecemane Lion for instance). It can also give a huge lifeswing in combination with Soulfire Grand Master so it can become handy vs many aggressive streategies.

  • 2x Stoke the Flames : I've reduced Stoke the Flames to two because convoke probabilities are less high without Hordeling Outburst or a full playset of Goblin Rabblemaster.
    **Counterspells and Card Draw**
  • 2x Ojutai's Command : Counter draw ''a la Cryptic Command'' is obviously good, so is counter bring back Jace or draw a card bring back Jace or gain 4 life bring back Soulfire against a red deck. With the high power comes high mana cost so I've brought numbers down to two to make starting hand and dual drawing probability lower.

  • 2x Dig Through Time : Serves multiple purposes in the deck: finding specific answers, finding action or finding the finishing blow of burn spells. I like it as a two-of for the same reasons than O-Command.

  • **The Sideboard**
  • 2x Anger of the Gods : comes in against general aggressive strategies, G/W Megamorph, Abzan Hangerback and can also be good on the play against G/R Devotion to sweep their dorks.

  • 3x Arashin Cleric : Reserved for extremely aggressive strategies.

  • 2x Negate : Against decks that play mostly non-creature spells or that that pivot around one or two very important non-creature spells.

  • 2x Revoke Existence : Against artifacts and/or enchantment based strategies (Scissors, Constellation, Ascendancy, Whip)

  • 1x Glare of Heresy : Great against Abzan and G/W.
  • 2x Disdainful Stroke : Comes to fight midrange strategies. Anticipating opponent's way of sideboarding is important with this one since some decks side into higer curves, if you expect a higher curve coming from your opponent's post sideboard Disdainful Stroke is a good card to counter side-board them!.

  • 1x Elspeth, Sun's Champion : As an additional threat against control and for grindier matchups.

  • 2x Tragic Arrogance : Good against decks that play dorks (G/R Devotion, G/W megamorph) and a total blowout against Constellation. Do no bring this in against decks that do not commit much to the board or it will rot in your hand (decks that play a mix of removal and creatures).
