Legacy Dark Depths

Legacy budget GB Turbo Depths deck.

This a fast combo deck, maybe not the fastest, but probably one of the most resilient and the most difficult to deal with. It has a lot of interaction and several ways to protect/tutor itself.

The combo is Dark Depths + Vampire Hexmage or Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage + 2 mana. This removes all the counters at once, or make a Dark Depths copy without any counters in the second case; note that the original is sacrificed because of the Legend rule.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth helps us cast our black mana spells and turns Dark Depths into a mana producer, it's important because we have several colorless or utility lands in the deck.

Duress and Thoughtseize are our interaction and protection package with targeted discard and it's a way to have informations about what our opponent can answer.

Pithing Needle is very important to protect Dark Depths. By default (blind) it would name Wasteland. It used to name Deathrite Shaman. It can name Ghost Quarter, Jace the Mind Sculptor, Knight of the Reliquary, Sneak Attack, Walking Ballista, Aether Vial, Endbringer, Maze of Ith, Liliana of the Veil, Rishadan Port...

As land tutors we have Into the North, than can get Forest, Swamp or Dark Depths. Sylving Scrying can get anything. Crop Rotation, which is the best one but be careful if it is countered, the sacrifice is in the casting cost. Expedition Map is a bit slow but it is more resilient, colorless and can get Boseiju (see sideboard) more reliably.

Lotus Petal and Elvish Spirit Guide enables fast combo (T2 or even T1 instead of Turn 3) and fixes our mana.

Sylvan Safekeeper keeps our Marit Lage token alive, it need to stay alive until it can attack for lethal.

We can tutor Sejiri Steppe with Crop Rotation to protect the token at instant speed. The protection from color can also make it unblockable versus flyers like Faerie tokens, Flickerwisp or Vendilion Clique.

Bojuka Bog versus graveyard deck can be tutored instantly with Crop Rotation.

Ghost quarter is strong against Cloudpost and it helps us force our combo through a Wasteland if we don't draw Pithing Needle. We activate Ghost Quarter on Wasteland, in response they try to destroy Dark Depths and in response we combo, and make the Token.

Budget :

We replaced 3 Bayou and 4 Verdant Catacombs with 1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, 4 Blooming Marsh and 1 Overgrown Tomb.

Most of the cards (notably lands) are reprinted in Ultimate Masters, so the deck price will become accessible to new people in Legacy.

We have Faerie Macabre in the sideboard as graveyard hate, I personnally already have one surgical extraction so I put one in there. It could be several surgical extractions.

Sideboard :

Pithing Needle and Sylvan Safekeeper can be removed if the opponent has no interaction. 1 or 2 utility lands or the 4th Urborg can be removed if needed.

The sideboard is to counter the bad match-ups.

Boseiju, Who Shelters All + Rite of Consumption goes through countermagic, removals or Ensnaring Bridge. You summon Marit Lage during your main phase. When it is on the field you get the priority back and you can cast an uncounterable Rite of Consumption and the sacrifice is part of the casting cost, so the opponent can't do anything. This combo might be main deck. 3 rites for a reliable draw and there are plenty of ways to tutor Boseiju. Maybe I should play Expedition Map over Into the North.

Dread of Night is for D&T and Monastery Mentor.

Faerie Macabre and Surgical Extraction are for graveyards deck especially Reanimator, Storm or Dredge. It can be used defensively to protect Dark Depths from a Wasteland+Surgical Extraction.

Mindbreak Trap is for Storm or for some weird combo turn 1 deck. (Oops all Spells or Spanish Inquisition from Jeff Hoogland).

Natural State is for Blood Moon or Ensnaring Bridge deck, it's important that it cost only 1 colored mana symbol.

Karakas is for the mirror match and for Griselbrand/Emrakul decks, it can be good against Thalia.

I hope you enjoyed this Deck and this tutorial. Feel free to upgrade it to a more optimized version. You can upgrade the manabase using Verdant Catacombs and Overgrown Tomb instead of Bayous, if you do, add a Dryad Arbor to protect your token against sacrifice effect. Assassin's Trophy is a versatile card and should probably be in the sideboard.
