except that it is a sorcery. so Exquisite Firecraft is worse, unless you play a modern counterspell deck. i would love to play it against my burn deck. also, modern burn has Eidolon of the Great Revel in 100 percent of decks, so at 6 cmc Flame Javelin is ideal.

Rift Bolt and Searing Blaze for the main and Smash to Smithereens for the sideboard. Exquisite Firecraft is strictly better Flame Javelin.

Thanks for the Upvote! I hadn't seen Flame Javelin in my search. I am not worried about Chalice of the Void because I have Lightning Strikes and Flame Javelin not to mention Thunderous Wrath.

Eidolon of the Great Revel also does not worry me because I am putting out more damage than I am taking in.

Flame Javelin seems better than char, and it has cmc 6 so you don't take damage from Eidolon of the Great Revel.

Nice inputs guys! Glad to see it's a subject that can lead to a discussion :) I am indeed aware of all the cards you mentionned, but I really like the fact that you get 'rewarded' for going mono red. Hence the (multiple) only in the cmc.

Flame Javelin is a bit underwhelming when you think of it. Not strong enough for 3 for burn purposes (with Boros Charm around) or removal purposes (Flame Slash everybody), and it's clearly a scam for ...

Though I fully understand that balancing this must be a real nightmare since it would mess up with their lately designed creatures, I still think it could be a great spell to allow more red controlly builds to exist. I've tried some stuff other than Skred Red to have a control red deck in Modern but all my attempts went to sh*t because there is no actual decent burn spell that's versatile enough to both take out big dudes and close out the game. It could also be lots of fun for mono red EDH!

- deals 5 to target creature or player would be the most balanced solution, I think. Heck, it could even be a sorcery I wouldn't care!

There have been similar cards in the past, but none of them have approached that power level. As damage increases, to keep it balanced, the mana cost would need to increase by more than you'd expect.

The closest thing you could compare your 4-damage Big Bolt to, is Flame Javelin, which is an older, more flexible Unfriendly Fire. There is also Char which included a drawback because its cost was so cheap.

Also, a 6-mana burn spell would need a higher cost than Explosive Impact. If the "2 generic mana = 1 colored mana" conversion rate is to be believed, this card implies 5 damage would be fair at the cost .

It turns out that Lightning Bolt is above the curve on burn spells, and makes a poor baseline for new card proposals. If you want to make a balanced spell, you should look at Shock and Lightning Strike for the correct way to cost a new burn spell.

When you play Mono Red Burn you end up having a lot of filler space available to customize your deck after adding playsets of Rift Bolt, Lightning Bolt, Goblin Guide, Eidolon of the Great Revel, Monastery Swiftspear, and Lava Spike. Along with that usually you run about 1 Shard Volley because drawing multiple can be devastating, and even 2 can be stretching it (but maybe play 2 if you think you can).

Some of the better options after that are Hellspark Elemental, Keldon Marauders, Vexing Devil, Searing Blaze, Grim Lavamancer, Shrine of Burning Rage, Exquisite Firecraft (which is a very underestimated card), Ball Lightning, and Magma Jet.

Then more tertiary options include Spark Elemental, Flame Javelin (which does not get hit by Inquisition of Kozilek), Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip, Chandra's Phoenix and Thunderous Wrath.

For the sideboard some good options include Blood Moon, Leyline of Punishment, Smash to Smithereens, Molten Rain, Curse of the Pierced Heart, Anger of the Gods, Dragon's Claw, Tormod's Crypt, and Relic of Progenitus.

Keep in mind that what cards I have recommended you do not have in paragraphs 2-4. Also you have stated that this indeed is a burn deck (like T4 kill you kind of thing) so I am treating it like that. And if this is the case you usually want to run 18 lands, maybe more (especially if you play with fetch lands). But if you are a more controlling deck then that is another story and I can go in-depth on the more controlling archetypes of Mono Red if you want.

Also Keldon Megaliths can be good, along with many other utility lands for red.

Rakdos Cackler Ash Zealot and Flame Javelin are some hard hitting budget options. People might laugh at your Lightning Strikes, Searing Spears and Incinerates for not being Lightning Bolts but they probably won't be laughing very long.
