In your opinion I want to know the most OP color(s), creature type, ability, etc. Please back up your opinion with a reason.

ZarBluestar says... #2

IMO the most overpowered are elves because of their synergy, simic evolve for massive power in late game, and eldrazi because of their annihilator ability which keeps your foes at bay.

Color: Blue. Look at vintage then we'll talk.
Tribe: Elves. Combo out the wazoo.
Ability: Infect. $10 and you could win a tournament with the right know-how.

Color: Also believe it to be blue

Tribe: Everyone knows it elves, so we should try to come up with something else

Ability: Hexproof, especially from cards like Asceticism

Tutoring is the most over powered ability in mtg as it scales exponentially when the overall powerlevel of a cardpool is high.

What's the most expensive lands (that isn't on the reserve list), fetch lands. What became the most broken creature of it's format when other powerful cards were printed? Stoneforge Mystic . What allows 99 cards made of singleton cards to work as consistent 3rd to 4th turn combo decks? tutor spells.

so... has anyone ever considered making a U/G elf-infect? And Narwek another awesome hexproof elf card is Drove of Elves .

Am I the only thinking slivers for tribe? Granted the good sliver help opponent's slivers as well but as much as I hate slivers you can't deny they are powerful.

Demarge what cards have the tutoring ability?

I'll try to mix it up by restricting my answer to standard cards and say

Color: green. See Thragtusk

Tribe: Humans. It's the only legit standard tribe right now.

Ability: flashback. So much value!

July 26, 2013 2:41 p.m.

Narwek says... #15

I have an Esper, and a Gruul ally deck. The second one only has 1 non creature spell, Primal Surge

July 26, 2013 2:42 p.m.

Demarge says... #16

color: blue, because one mana virtual card advantage cards are amazing.

tribe: wizard or human because they make up the more powerful creatures that fit into many decks (Snapcaster Mage , Dark Confidant Azami, Lady of Scrolls are all good examples. Also there are no extremely overpowered elf edh deck strategy, but a good Azami wizard tribal deck will make everyone groan at that table.

Personally I believe elves are actually an extremely weak tribe as they have only the one combo deck in legacy to be proud of and the occasional standard deck during power summer when the max sets are available to that format. While humans or wizards on the other hand you'll be hard pressed to find a deck with creatures (that isn't dedicated to a certain tribe) to not have at least some within it's 75.

July 26, 2013 2:43 p.m.

I think it depends on the tournament type. Standard is easily swagtusk (Thragtusk ) and Voice of Resurgence .

Affinity was so OP it actually caused the number of players of MtG to substantially drop. Card wise, you have to look at the Power 9, the most OP cards in existence.

Ability-wise, the "Necropotence effect" or pay 1 life: draw 1 card. It actually forced Wizards into banning other cards and when they remade it with a higher casting cost (Yawgmoth's Bargain ) they had to drop the ban hammer on that too. Guess what, it's still OP, look at Todd Anderson's win at GP KC with the Griselbrand /Goryo's Vengeance deck.

Narwek it sounds like if you draw that card, you'll mill yourself out. Imagine if you do that, and attack with what you can, and your opponent plays Fog or Riot Control and says "I win!"

Demonic Tutor , Vampiric Tutor , Mystical Tutor , Sylvan Tutor etc. etc.

color wise blue, creature type (agree on elves) however i'd like to give a shout out to goblins which have some pretty crazy synergy

@ZarBluestar That's why you always leave the bottom card or 2

July 26, 2013 2:52 p.m.

tutoring is much like unblockable, it's generally too complicated to give it a keyword (they did remove unblockable as a keyword with the m14 rules change btw), examples include Demonic Tutor , Stoneforge Mystic , Enlightened Tutor , and Misty Rainforest .

I had this U/G Elf ramp mass +1/+1 counter card draw thing going then I added 3x Rot Wolf and people just stopped playing against me when I had 2 35/35 Rot Wolf on the field with 4 counter spells in hand.....

Blue has definitely gotten some of the most OP cards over the years Flash , Force of Will , Jace , the Broken (mind) Sculptor, AEtherling . Even when paired with other colors blue seems to add some brokenness to its pairing, Sphinx's Revelation anyone?

As for Tribal I am torn between the Elves synergistic and ramping qualities, Eldrazi and their ability to wipe your opponents board over time and Slivers and their seemingly neverendless abilities.

When it comes to abilities I think it is a toss-up for me between Lifelink and Deathtouch (deathtouch takes it hands down when paired with First Strike Glissa, the Traitor . I believe both of these abilities when used properly can turn the tide of battle.

@ Demarge no overpowered elf EDH strategy??? Have you ever seen an Ezuri, Renegade Leader deck? Once you pull Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary the game is basicaly over. Only down side is that you must play mono green.

Comparing elves to azami is unfair, in that case it's not the wizard tribe that is broken, it's azami.....

Anyway, best color : blue if the player know how to play blue, it require more skill than most color

Best tribe:probably ally since they do something uppn entering the field

Best ability: non-basic landwalk :D

Tribe: Obviously Slivers, not new slivers, old school slivers.

sylvannos says... #27

Blue is definitely the strongest color with Time Walk , Ancestral Recall , Timetwister , Brainstorm , Force of Will , Mystical Tutor , Counterspell , and Jace, the Mind Sculptor . Black is the second strongest, but its cards don't even come close to being as efficient.

Elves is a strong tribe, but they don't hold a candle to Goblins. Sure, they have a lot of ramp, but Goblins have Goblin Ringleader + Goblin Recruiter , Goblin Matron , Goblin Lackey , Goblin Piledriver , Goblin Sharpshooter , Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker ...the list goes on. This doesn't even consider how well Goblins can splash other colors.

Cascade and Hexproof are probably the strongest abilities in the game, followed closely by Flying, Indestructible, and Infect.

I think i'm gonna change my answer for tribe to elves. Slivers have limits that elves don't. Joraga Warcaller + Immaculate Magistrate = never ending power and toughness

rache says... #30

The most over powered card isn't on the power 9 list and most people haven't even heard of it. Want the most OP card just look up Contract from Below because who doesn't wanna draw 7 cards for 1 mana?

July 27, 2013 9:22 p.m.

Strongest color - Blue for Control, Red/Green for Aggro

Tribe - a tie between the Elves, the Goblins, and the Vampires

Ability - I'm gonna say a tie between Cipher, Shadow, First Strike, and maybe Soulbond?

Planeswalker (in general) - Jace, the Mind Sculptor for control, Garruk, Caller of Beasts for aggro

August 1, 2013 10 p.m.

Oh yeah, and for Tribes, don't forget the Slivers. They make killer EDH/Commander decks.

August 1, 2013 10:03 p.m.

AjMcGamer says... #33

Contract from Below is powerful but it is an extremely limited card on its own since I haven't seen anyone play for ante in 10+ years so I wouldn't call it OP at all.

August 2, 2013 7:09 a.m.

rache says... #34

@ShiltonCDXX You're right that it's not often played since it's banned in all sanctioned games and even in casual players don't often play for ante these days but that doesn't change the fact that it's more broken than Batman's back after meeting Bane. Ancestral Recall is broken for drawing 3 for 1 mana and Contract from Below costs the same yet draws you more than twice as many cards. Almost every card in MtG will see functional reprints (often better than the original for lacking a drawback the original card had to deal with but you'll never see a card like Contract from Below again (the closest you'll get is Griselbrand but he costs 8 and charges 7 life to draw).
