Why is this card only 35 cents? why is no one playing it.

Nacatl War-Pride

This cards reads "bonkers shit can happen when pared with Strionic Resonator" or Vela the Night-Clad type stuff.

What's your guys thoughts on this cards? Are you guys running this card? Do you know any sweet combos with this card? Are you wondering like me why it's only 35 cents? Let's talk about this.

ChiefBell says... #2

It's 35 cents because at the end of the day, even if you have 15 3/3s, you still only have 15 3/3s. 3/3s just aren't that important or impactful.

To trigger war pride you have to attack with war pride. The likelihood of the opponent having a creature that can kill a 3/3 is very high. So you just spent 6 mana to get one attack phase out of it..... it's just not good essentially. Theres so much more impactful stuff 6 mana can give you immediately like Deadwood Treefolk for example.

Ironically that card is 22 cents and its arguably a lot more impactful.

A 3/3 is not really that good in commander, its a format that is about big drops and combos. For six mana this card is not very good or impactful at all when I could drop a lot bigger things for five mana.

Still, why it's probably not the sweetest or most impactful card in Commander at its price range (and it's a heavy green commitment I might add), you can still have fun with it. I like to think Trostani, Selesnya's Voice would be great fun with it, as the warrior cats come with a little gift of life. If you have Beastmaster Ascension active of course they become a bit more dangerous and the original becomes a little more resilient. I presume Bow of Nylea doesn't quite work in giving the tokens deathtouch as the tokens never declare an attack, but someway of giving your creatures deathtouch would be freakin sweet.

But yeah, I'm not surprised this car is low-priced. It's also a bit obscure on top of everything else, so not many people seek it out.

pookypuppy6: Bow of Nylea would work in this instance, since the tokens are put into play attacking.

What people don't see is you get one token through for damage and all of your other creatures also. So if you have a way untapping you can hurt who ever is being attacked . And it helps if in right deck. Green white works, cause with Coat of Arms or Cathars' Crusade it gets pretty good.

But even so it would not work in competitive groups. In more casual groups, or those that limit or ban combos, this card could work with the right support.

This guy could be pretty nuts in the right deck or attacking the player playing the "right" deck. People downplaying with "3/3's aren't good enough in commander" as if he's just mirroring measly 1/1's, I'm not sure what level of EDH elitist you are, but 3/3's are good in my books. He definitely belongs in a token deck to at the very least test out. Just depends what you have out on the field to break him.

August 11, 2016 7:58 a.m.

This card can be great when you play around it. If you have some ETB, LTB, or sac abilities that will trigger with him then he's fine. A big problem is that he's meh on his own. As Chief said, you block the original and you just got one decent attack out of him.

Another issue is that its usefulness depends on your opponents deck, which is bad. It's meh against a deck that only plans to have a few creatures at once, and a deck designed to go wide will likely have ways to pump their team or just not care to chump a few tokens.

I still think it can be a fun card, but it has quite a few liabilities that justify the price and popularity.

i mean if the opponent has no creatures you get a 3/3 that does nothing. no trample etc. even casual level edh is full of creatures like Terastodon

I slightly disagree, as this card comboes quite well with stuff like Impact Tremors or similar cards. But the point is still the same: destroy the first original creature and you are back to square one.

Cheers

There are ways to improve the inherent weaknesses of the card, such as using Maze of Ith to make sure it survives combat, or equipping the many voltron-like equipments/enchantments that grant indestructibility. It's a fine card, but does require that your opponents also play creatures (which hardly anyone in my meta does).

Sundial of the Infinite, I've seen it used in a Ulasht, the HateSeed ETB commander deck, and it was pretty nasty

Sorry, I earlier meant Warstorm Surge. Imagine that Nacatl War-Pride ability against a horde of zombies hahahah

Bow of Nylea definitely works, but edhrec shows its used most with Second Harvest. Then again, using Sundial of the Infinite also to keep permanent tokens seems like a bunch of fun too. What if I flash in a Craterhoof Behemoth? That's probably game over for that opponent. I'd love to see what it can do with a Whip of Erebos too!

It's a build around me card. The best part is one creature buff like Dictate of Heliod and it kills just about any average creature in edh. Or give them all deathtoutch with Archetype of Finality. Or if you end up with quite a few creatures then Mass Polymorph would be sweet. Or sacrifice them to Westvale Abbey  Flip to get your Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip.

You could give them a bunch of creatures with Tempt with Vengeance. Or Twilight's Call

I was thinking about pairing him or her up with Iroas, God of Victory making him or her unblockable. Or protect them with Dolmen Gate. A simple evasion trick like Levitation can do great things. If you survive the combat with a lot of creatures the things like Emrakul's Evangel or Thromok the Insatiable and Soulblast.

What about extra combat phases. this creature with Sword of Feast and Famine and Aggravated Assault.

There is so much you can do and I haven't even mentioned Doubling Season, Primal Vigor or Parallel Lives.

August 11, 2016 12:12 p.m.

One janky synergy is with Pathbreaker Ibex.

But again, EDH is a format with Deadeye Navigator + Palinchron , Bloodchief Ascension + Mindcrank , Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion , etc. This card can be good in the right deck paired with the right cards, but there are better combos and synergies and that's not enough to make it raise in price.

I think I would put this in a Maelstrom Wanderer deck

Imagine you play Nacatl War-Pride then play Essence of the Wild

mentor6 says... #20

To sum it up, it's not tier 1 or 2. It's too slow, that's where prices go crazy. Doesn't make it unplayable. It does do crazy fun things in the right meta game.

libraryjoy says... #21

I'm having fun with it in an Emmara Tandris build. With Rhys the Redeemed & Sundial of the Infinite. The cool thing is that the tokens, if still on the field more than one turn, have the potential to create an OVERWHELMING army on the second swing. Is it tier one? No. But is it really cool & fun in casual play? Oh, absolutely!

I had it in an Asmira, Holy Avenger deck, but the tokens don't die, so the synergy just wasn't there.

jandrobard says... #22

Has anyone mentioned Breath of Fury? That's the only combo I know that works with it.

August 11, 2016 1:53 p.m.

griffstick says... #23

@libraryjoy tokens die just like creature cards. But when they hit the graveyard they fizzle out. That would work with her. Assuming they were blocked and killed

@jandrobard yea that would be a perfect scenario in the case it doesn't die so pair both of them up with Dolmen Gate, Infinite combats.

I have considered running it in my Prossh deck. The CMC of six makes me hesitant.

August 11, 2016 3:49 p.m.

libraryjoy says... #25

griffstick - Yes, you're correct about the blocking, but the tokens that get "removed from the game" don't die, but go into exile.

Holy heck, that would be fun with Second Harvest. Next turn, swinging with 10 (or so) War-Prides, which then all multiply. Youch!

Nacatl War-Pride has synergistic value in my Prossh, Skyraider of Kher EDH deck... He just makes all those cats and leaves Prossh feeling like he just had lunch at Panda Express.

Wouldn't you want to run Parallel Lives and Doubling Season with this creature??

Jokester1393 that's the point. The card is way better then most people give it credit for

Yeah. That's like I run Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip in my tiny leader mill/defended deck for a 2 drop that flips into a 13/13 is straight broken
