Powerful Commanders on a Budget

Commander Deck Help forum

Oh wonderful people of TappedOut... I need help yet again. Currently I am looking for my next commander (and as im dirt poor it will be on a budget, about $150 as a total Max). I need suggestions, and im open to basically anything you have. I have a control deck, mono blue Azami, and I have a Meren and a Brago deck so I would prefer to not make another of them, but besides that I want to hear what you all got for me (heck, shamelessly promote you own decks, I dont care I just need ideas). I open to basically any style of deck, i just want it to be evil and to be able to kick ass. Help me, i beg of you.

Well, I have a very casual blue/red EDH that is fun to play. It's a little bonkers though. It's still in it's first iteration, and plays like a bull in a china shop. Last night I blew everything up by flashing out a Bearer of the Heavens (using Mindwrack Liege) to block a 10 power. That was fun. If you don't care about winning and just want to get zany, you can check out Electric Storm Hug N Slug. If you want something competitive or need a clear path to victory, don't bother looking at it. Either way, good luck finding your next new brew! May your lands never come in tapped, and your spells always resolve.

With those decks you have, I would consider a group slug deck. Raise Havoc is a favorite of mine, and usually the deck I lead on in a new playgroup. It's big on goblins and swinging at people, and it always makes the game fun (dependent on people's definition of "fun").

I may have a few suggestions for you. Some budget Commanders that perform well while even on a budget are Commanders like Razaketh, the Foulblooded, Sidisi, Undead Vizier and Yisan, the Wanderer Bard. The main win con with the first two is to combo out with something like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Triskelion. And Yisan just does sillyness. Cheat stuff out and profit. My personal take on a budget deck that is different from what you have mentioned above is Voltron. I am quite the fan of Voltron and it can be powerful while being on a budget. 21 Commander damage is quite feasible and most people don't encounter it a lot, at least that's how its been in my experience. My two commanders of choice right now are Sram, Senior Edificer and Sigarda, Host of Herons. The former is more Artifact based whilst the latter is more Enchantment based. I only have a decklist for Sram right now but I can get a Sidgarda one together fairly easily if that peeks your interest. Also a note, I know the deck list says 160 over all but when I went to checkout on TCG the deck was only 130.

Here's the list: Budget Voltron EDH

I 2nd Sram, Senior Edificer he can be pretty strong on budget... & if you upgrade him later he can hit like a ton of bricks

I 2nd Grenzo, Havoc Raiser as tons of fun & reasonable power... Also, fairly unconventional (doesn't have to be played with the gobs though... I just include tons of double-striking & unblockable effects)

Another budget commander is Karlov of the Ghost Council I've seen him do some cool stuff

Ive gone through many edh decks in my free time and the best budget one ive ever built that could manage to be a good and tough deck was my omnath, locus of rage deck. The one i made was about $150 however many of the cards you could easily substitute for cheaper cards (and i had a bit of foils in that deck which raises the price). But it was a really fast and aggresive ramp elemental tribal deck, and it was a ton of fun to play.

Krenko, Mob Boss can also be a really budget and extremely powerful deck that can win really fast.

Another really consistant and good deck is Lu Xun, Scholar General as a artifact/voltron deck with control bits in it. I had so much fun playing him and it was funny to watch people die to horsemanship general damage.

OH also anothe deck i loved playing was Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. She can be built for pretty cheamp and easily upgrade into a good deck. I always keep finding myself eanting to rebuild her because of how much fun she was to play (but many of the cards i need for her are in my other edh decks) you just have to thrown in discard spells or sac outlets and play lots of good value 2 power creatures.

Purphoros, God of the Forge can be built on budget. He can be quite explosive wiping out opponents seemingly out of nowhere. Purphoros and His Band of Hooligans is my deck and has a rep at the LGS/meta. Taking out Wheel of Fortune would drop it down near your budget.

Rafiq of the Many can be built on a budget depending on which route you go. I built him as enchantress voltron. It's interesting because even if Rafiq gets hated out, you can strap everything onto your other critters. I've had a 21+ powered Verduran Enchantress with the whole slew of abilities which was hilarious. Rafiq's Enchantress Harem is my deck

Karametra, God of Harvests is one of my favorite. She flies under the radar until you easily have 17+ lands early on. She will save you money on lands bc she only really needs basics. Easily abused by Whitemane Lion and other similar cards. A simple Llanowar Elves now becomes land ramp. My favorite play is to drop a mama dork and while I'm fetching a land, drop Panglacial Wurm. Nothing is more hilarious than to see your opponent's faces when you drop a 9/5 trample from your deck. Karametra, Goddess of Terra is my deck, and it's a blast (especially with Novablast Wurm lol).

Many decks featured on the TappedOut Commander Series videos are actually pretty budget-friendly if you just rework the land-bases. Check out the articles.

I can't recommend General Tazri enough. The deck is kind of reliant on Sea Gate Loremaster, But it works fine without it, and my current build is about $120. The deck is STUPID powerful though, as I beat my friends two thousand dollar Atraxa, Praetors' Voice deck 5 times out of 10. There are also many wincons, as I've won by damage, gaining life until everyone scooped, decking someone, and stealing someone's sheoldred with Agadeem Occultist. It's also a super fun deck to play. I've been playing it for a couple months now, and I haven't been in a boring game with it.

Kresh the Bloodbraided with stuff like Pestilence, Pyrohemia, and Thrashing Wumpus is the BEST! It lets you kill stuff consistantly, avoid the a lot of the expensive cards that usually come with Kresh (you don't need any Pact effects or sac outlets, for example). The entire deck, complete with stuff like Essence Harvest, Soul's Fire, and Fling came to around to, like $60? XD

Lethal commander is the name of the game!

Plague Spitter

Pestilence Demon

Anything that pings all the things!

Last Laugh was a funny board wipe that also sometimes killed everyone.
