Didn't see that coming... —April 5, 2019

1st Ranked Deck over a year later (I know, just Mardu... don't tell anyone) 4/5/19

I would strongly consider more sources of card advantage (draw/discard effects). The main omission that jumps out to me is Mentor of the Meek. I would even consider Sensei's Divining Top. If you want to embrasure the discard side, I would include Sadistic Hypnotist, Necrogen Mists and Painful Quandary.

I have build a somewhat similar deck off my own design, and I have noticed that it is one of the the MOST aggressive decks out there. However, like any aggro deck, If you get hit with a few boardwipes it can be a struggle to come back sometimes. The best thing to combat that is by keeping your opponents handsize to a minimum, which gain you card advantage while also dealing with some of their hate cards. I think any good aggro deck in commander need a STRONG element of card advantage to survive.

Any particular reason for Vein Drinker, Drana Kalastria Bloodchief, and pawn of ulamog? Vein drinker doesn't seem to do much for its cost, Drana Kalastria Bloodchief seems pretty slow but I may be not be seeing something, and Pawn of Ulamog only works on your own nontoken creatures.

Im trying to build one too so Im curious about these 3 choices

Ty Vexen. I actually had mentor of the meek in my list at the beginning but found it to be too susceptible to removal and it wasn't there when I needed it (typically post-boardwipe).

I've also considered the discard route and I admittedly haven't given up on it. One of the cards I ran for this was Pain Magnification and it did put in some work. I liked the curse all opponents aspect of the card and the fact that it incentivized my opponents to swing elsewhere (a little table talk goes a long way here. Something like 'blue players at 6 mana with 2 cards in hand... that's 1 mana from overloaded cyclonic rift guys').

So this deck is on the backburner for the next 4 weeks for FNM (casual games will still get played with this deck).

One of my LGS hands out fnm promos to the winner of EDH pods so I'm going super degenerate and playing my Narset list every week. I already won 2x fatal push last friday and I plan on keeping it up. I won both games by turn 3 and was soooo close to winning a 3rd (stasis locks suck balls).

Anyways, if anyone wants to comment on that list, feedback or ideas are appreciated.http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/narset-enlightened-disaster-3/

I know it's already been mentioned but I just took another look at Purphoros, God of the Forge for my deck and I'm strongly considering adding it. I don't love having a non-vampire creature, but dealing 4 damage to each opponent every time you cast a vampire is amazing. And if you have Exquisite Blood out it'll be hella fun - that is definitely the type of life manipulation I want my vamps to be doing. Especially cool because it's a way of winning in an aggro deck that doesn't involve attacking.

Id replace Greed with Erebos, Does the same thing, for a bit more, with a bit more utility. I also like Heliod, hes super useful especially with reconissance

Last_Laugh, you are lucky to have competitive edh pods. I wanted to try to get something like this started at the shop where I play. They already have French rules 1v1 Commander. The owner (very nice guy) was a little hesitant because of possible collusion between players. How does your shop handle that issue?

I wanted to continue our discussion concerning Cathars' Crusade. You are playing Shared Animosity. I do not see any more finishers. Has that been an issue? If I were to cut Cathar's Crusade which of these cards that you are playing would you add?

Teferi's Protection

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad

Sorin, Solemn Visitor

Mirage Mirror

Boros Charm

No french 1v1 and pods are 100% random so competitive pods are hit or miss. This deck is for underpowered pods, my other decks are grossly overpowered for those groupings. I run a major +1+1 counter and lords subtheme so the lack of finishers hasn't been an issue but I am susceptible to boardwipes and don't recover very quickly.

Teferi's protection has saved me so many time, just MHO

September 11, 2017 2:14 p.m.

Recovering from board wipes is the number one issue I have faced. Necropotence was one of the cards that drew me to your list. I think draw engines have to be the answer.

Last_Laugh says... #11

Zommbiebro - I already run Teferi's Protection and also Boros Charm

Frank_Glascock - Yes, a mixture of draw engines and protection cards like the ones mentioned above are needed. I might end up trying another protection spell for good measure but there aren't any more in these colors that protect all permanents you control. There's 2 I can think of that protect creatures though. Make a Stand and Rootborn Defenses... not sure if 3 mana is doable though.

Lapse of Certainty sounds hilarious to play against somebody's game ender. Cast that, and swing for lethal.

September 11, 2017 10:43 p.m.

I am thinking of dropping Cathar's Crusade for Teferi's Protection. Shared Animosity and Eldrazi Monument seem to be superior to Cathar's Crusade as they both do something immediately. It just never seems like a good time to cast Cathar's Crusade.

Anyone else had the same thoughts or experiences?

Reconnaissance already had good purpose in my deck thx for the suggestion! What is your opinion on Cover of Darkness

September 19, 2017 12:55 a.m.

Last_Laugh, I took your and others advice and put Teferi's Protection in the deck. I have only cast it once but it won me the game. I put Boros Charm in today. Has it been performing to your expectations?

I really like your enchantments and instants. I did have questions about several of your creatures. Some of these seem ineffective for the mana or just low cost but offer nothing else.

Can you make a case for the inclusion of these cards:

Vampire Nocturnus, Tithe Drinker, Olivia Voldaren, Olivia, Mobilized for War, Necropolis Regent, Mirri the Cursed, Kalastria Highborn, Indulgent Aristocrat, Drana's Emissary, Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief, Bloodlord of Vaasgoth, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, and Anowon, the Ruin Sage?

September 21, 2017 2:15 a.m.

I did not want to just offer critique of your creatures without making a suggestion. Board sweeps seem the best means to thwart our deck. I would recommend Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet take the place of Vampire Nocturnus or even better Olivia Voldaren as a means to lessen the blow.

What are your intended changes come Ixalan?

September 22, 2017 11:58 a.m.

I think for us these are the three additions ranked in order of impact: Sanctum Seeker, Bloodcrazed Paladin, Vicious Conquistador.

Am I off on Bishop of Rebirth? I am playing Bloodline Necromancer.

Lil_Kalki says... #19

I think bishop>necromancer due to reusability but that may be a purely personal call. Beyond that I think you're pretty spot on.

Falkenbach1 - Cover of Darkness seems likr a solid card that I'd try if I owned a copy.

Frank_Glascock - I plan on picking up Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet but I'm waiting for it to rotate out of standard to see if the price drops. Most of the vampires you listed I'm happy with (some are included almost exclusively for lifegain). I'm not too thrilled with Kalastria Highborn and Olivia, Mobilized for War is just an evasive beatstick. I'll probably be replacing both.

Lil_Kalki - I want to add/test Bishop of Rebirth, Vicious Conquistador, Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle, and possibly Vona, Butcher of Magan.

Also I finally picked up Exquisite Blood and pulled a foil Mavren Fein. I'll post updates when I figure out exactly what I'm dropping to add those.

September 23, 2017 11:15 a.m.

My zeal lead me to make an error. Indulgent Aristocrat should not be listed as it is one of the best one drops we play.

  1. I count 37 other black cards in your deck besides Vampire Nocturnus. Has he been consistent enough for the mana cost?

  2. I am playing New Blood and Captivating Vampire. Has Olivia Voldaren's theft effect been worth the heavy mana investment? If not, she has to be cut as there are too many good four mana creatures competing for that spot. Purphoros, God of the Forge is one along with Sanctum Seeker from Ixalan.

  3. I agree with your cut of Olivia, Mobilized for War and Kalastria Highborn. Tithe Drinker seems lackluster. Mirri the Cursed, Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Drana's Emissary seem too expensive. The worst offender of this group seems to be Blood Baron of Vizkopa as he is expensive and conditional.

  4. Has Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief and Anowon, the Ruin Sage been good?

  5. I have questioned 13 cards of which two you are cutting two and one, Indulgent Aristocrat, should not have been included. If you could only keep three of the remaining 10 cards what would they be?

  6. You did not mention Sanctum Seeker as one of the new cards you wanted to test. It is the best vampire for your build from the new set.

  7. I am playing Exquisite Blood and am glad you are putting it into the deck. I have been debating whether to pull it out of the deck. Exquisite Blood along with Cliffhaven Vampire form a infinite combo once one of our opponents take damage. I never tutor for it and was thinking of cutting one or both. Did you intentionally leave out combos?

What is so bad about indulgent aristocrat?

Frank_Glascock

  1. Nocturnus is high risk high reward. When he's active your board is nuts. I also run all 9 fetches I can which gives me a free shuffle and a second chance to activate him frequently.

  2. I don't own New Blood but I'm actively seeking a copy (I want to live the dream and steal an Utvara Hellkite lol). No Purph as I'm trying to keep the deck slightly underpowered but I advocate running it.

  3. Drana's Emissary is lackluster, the others you listed I like here but Blood Baron might get replaced with Vona... I might keep both though.

  4. Yes and yes. Good repeated removal here.

  5. No idea which 3 honestly.

  6. Sanctum Seeker is a card I'd like to try but I was likewise hasty in my response (and tired).

  7. Kept combos out intentionally.
