A Dollar Card and A Dream (NEED HELP!!!!)

Commander (EDH) forum

So I played a few games of EDH at my local hobby shop with some friends, and I borrowed a friends deck (Damia, Sage of Stone ), and was very intrigued by the idea behind the deck. The point of the deck is to dig until you find Living Death and then use some self mill tactics to abuse Living Death to it's full extent. Since I didn't want to steal the whole deck, I decided to switch the colours to Abzan (Junk) and use Karador, Ghost Chieftain as my commander. I am going to build a version of this were the EDH is built around Living Death , so I would appreciate suggestions on cards for the deck and ideas on how to abuse Living Death . Thanks!

Off the top of my head, I would suggest picking up one or more cards for giving yourself hexproof to avoid having your graveyard wiped out (through methods such as Tormod's Crypt , etc).

@cklise My play group doesn't play a lot of grave-hate, but it might still be a good idea to pack some protection from it. Probably Leyline of Sanctity or Witchbane Orb type cards

Your best option would be to put together a deck list and post in the Deck Help forum (where this thread will probably be moved). It's much easier to give suggestions once we know where you want to take the deck.

Try to keep these general points in mind when building a shell (draft) for the deck:

  1. How will you get cards into your graveyard?
  2. Do you want to go infinite?
  3. What redundant reanimation effects do you want?
  4. How can you get Living Death or other aforementioned reanimation effects back if they get discarded/put into your graveyard?
  5. And of course, like any deck, your budget and playgroup

If you'd like my thoughts (I'm no EDH guru, but I can try to help), just let me know once you have a shell put together.

Leyline of the Void would be a viable way to abuse Living Death in the sense that only you get the creatures and not your opponents. Survival of the Fittest is also an excellent card to abuse Living Death and reanimator in general. Genesis might fit in there, too. I'm not sure about white, but Sun Titan is an excellent creature for getting lands or whatever back. Skullclamp is solid too. Have you considered Twilight's Call too? It's pretty similar but at instant speed too. Living End is the same thing as Living Death but just has suspend.

@ducttapedeckbox - That is a good idea. I will put together a list and post it in deck forums. I will take all those points into account, and link you to a list when its finished.

@NoPantsParade - I like all of those cards that you suggested, and Twilight's Call seems like a good edition. Im thinking Rise of the Dark Realms would be a good edition aswell.

@ducttapedeckbox - Another question I have, is what are good creatures to reanimate? I'm thinking creatures with ETB abilities are the way to go (Woodfall Primus , Ashen Rider , Terastodon , etc...)

Rune-Scarred Demon is my favorite target. Also Thragtusk with Disciple of Bolas is pretty good. You could probably get away with an ETB subtheme in the deck. I saw a Karador deck that had that same idea, and it was pretty good. Fleshbag Marauder , Wood Elves , and Farhaven Elf are good, cheap targets. You'll probably need some sac outlets, too. My favorite sac outlet is Altar of Dementia in a reanimator deck because you can mill yourself or your opponents. If you do decide to go with the ETB idea, then Strionic Resonator might be a good inclusion in the deck.

I'm using dragon re-animator and living death is a win-con. It's easy enough to get creatures and living death into the grave. Past in Flames was a key card to make the self mill work and red has a bunch of discard and draw cards. This is an old list still lacking things like Mesmeric Orb but it can give some ideas:

Liliana Vess , maybe some splashy etb creatures, you know.

@NoPantsParade - Those all seem like good creatures to reanimate, but I think Thragtusk is fairly unneeded in EDH... Altar of Dementia seems pretty sweet as well. I'm thinking that Ashnod's Altar might be a good sack outlet too.. Thoughts?

@Ohnoeszz - That's a cool list, but unfortunately red can't be included if I want to stay Abzan.

@WicKid52 - I do like Liliana Vess , and I think it would make a great edition to the deck!

Thanks all of you, keep the suggestions coming!

The good thing about using Karador, Ghost Chieftain is you also get access to better graveyard control than you would with Damia, Sage of Stone .

You can take advantage of things like Angelic Renewal , Enduring Renewal and Sigil of the New Dawn . Marshal's Anthem works pretty well too. You also get to tax opponents with things like Athreos, God of Passage .

You still get the better green and black cards too. Things like Deadbridge Chant and Entomb .

You lose counter spells, but gain way better removal from white, both in the form of board wipes (which works to your advantage) and spot removal.

The only real downside of not having blue is the lack of self mill, but you can still get things into your graveyard easily enough with just black.

I think the Karador, Ghost Chieftain / Living Death combo alone is worth using him over Damia, Sage of Stone , so hopefully you find enough cards that let you play to your strengths.

Sheoldred, Whispering One is a must. This is a really general suggestion, but you want all of your creatures to warrant an answer from your opponent; if they don't, they're not worth including. Additionally, if not more importantly, you want to have ways to protect your creatures that demand answers.

These powerful creatures naturally come with high mana costs (and monetary costs..), so a strong mana acceleration base is also important. I'd elect for mana rocks such as Mana Vault and Gilded Lotus , as well as exploration effects like Exploration (duh) and Burgeoning over spell-based acceleration like Farseek and Journey of Discovery .
