New to Commander: looking to assemble a bunch of generals

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on June 24, 2015, 2:16 p.m. by Apoptosis

Some buddies and I played commander for the first time recently using pre-constructed decks and we had a lot of fun, but I have little experience in the range of generals that are out there.

I have extensive collection of cards from Innistrad to the current set, and many cards from revised to Urza's Saga, but little knowledge of what's in between and few three color generals in my current collection.

What I'd like to assemble is a range of generals, mostly in three color combinations to play around with in casual games with friends. Essentially, I want to assemble a collection of a dozen or more generals to have fun with across the 3+ color spectrum. Budget isn't really an issue, but I'd like to keep each general under $15 (unless it also has real value in other eternal formats -with that said, I'm not looking to dump a ton of cash just to do so). I'll be homebrewing around those generals from the collection I already have and not digging extensively into older sets.

Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Apop.

P.S. I know this isn't a trade thread but while I was typing this it occurred to me that some of you might have a collection of generals already and would be willing to trade/sell them. If you want to explore that, send me a message and maybe we can work something out.

You have any choice in playstyle? Or are you just looking for a bunch of 3 color generals?

So, you want to assemble a bunch of deck? Why not go with one from each color combination?

I play Nekusar, the Mindrazer and he's a ton of fun. Marchesa, the Black Rose is neat.

Damia, Sage of Stone is good for combo-control, as is Tasigur, the Golden Fang. The Mimeoplasm is good for Sultai goodstuff.

Zedruu the Greathearted is good for a political deck. Ruhan of the Fomori is good for a random deck.

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic for pillow fort, That Hippogriff thing for Bant group hug.

That's just to name a few. I would avoid Voltron strategies as they don't seem to be as much fun/effective in a casual setting.

Thanks all, mainly three color generals. Personally, I'm a control player in standard, but around the kitchen table and way back in the day I liked combo prison decks. In this case, I'm looking for a bunch of interesting 3 color generals that provide lots of options. I'm asking for three color because I don't have very many(in contrast to 1-2 color, where I have lots).

Keep them coming and thanks again!

Roon of the Hidden Realm is tons of fun in a blink deck!

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher is sacrifice-voltron, Rafiq of the Many is usually equipment voltron, but it can be built in different ways. Animar, Soul of Elements works well with tons of creatures.

Here's a list of EDH tri-color decks that I have. You can look them over if you want to.

Sorry for the advertising. But I'm just lazy. :)

Just wondering, why only three color? I have many 2 and 1 color suggestions but my only tri-color suggestion is Sen Triplets for esper control. In my meta were me and another guy who is constantly changing colors and generals are the only control players, it works really well against any deck, you can even use sen triplets ability to play lands from their hands.

horatio13 please feel free to list some two color too. It's only because I'm collecting these generals for some kitchen table multiplayer games with friends and I have a fair number of legends in the various two color combos (and one). So I feel like I have some decent options in two colors but almost nothing in 3 (or more) colors.

If you really want to annoy your opponents, play Sliver Overlord and build a sliver deck. If you want tips, I own a sliver deck, and you can take a look at it.

My personal favorite 5-colors commanders are Cromat and Progenitus. Both end up usually making either a 5c superfriends, or 5c goodstuff. The best Progenitus build I've seen is Cascade superfriends, and that was awesome to watch. Evil as all get out, but worked really well.

Mentioning cascade Maelstrom Wanderer is also a fun commander to build around as all cascade, cascade creatures, or the most potent version I've seen, cascade superfriends.

All three of these cards are really fun commanders.

ShadowFlame_Studios nice idea, I don't have a Sliver Overlord, but I do own a Sliver Hivelord. A sliver deck was one that I was going to put together. I have a good amount of different slivers to put together, plus I think I can put together a decent manabase to support it.

Coinman1863 (and everyone) thanks for the suggestions. Maelstrom Wanderer and cascade shenanigans could be a lot of fun, but unfortunately I don't have any cards with the cascade mechanic so that would take some work to assemble.

This is a great start on a list. I'm looking forward to brewing some up!

You said you had a large collection, right? It might be worthwhile for you to just post all the legendary creatures you own. More than 70% of the legendary creatures that have been printed are able to have viable commander deck made around them. Just see what you have and go from there.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I just picked up a many of your suggestions and a bunch of slivers too to make an edh sliver deck.

I also went through my whole collection to pool all of my legendary creatures that are no longer standard legal, seems that card pool isn't as awesome as I thought. So suggestions for cool 1-2 color generals would be awesome. Thanks again!

You forgot one of the best commanders, Momir Vig, Simic Visionary. He is one of my all time favorites.

Another one of mine has to be Kira, Great Glass-Spinner in my mono-blue Lab Maniac deck.
