Sideboard

Maybeboard

An attempt at a competitive nearly-mono-red deck that makes use of Burn staples and efficient creatures with Blood Moon.

It's strength is speed and a consistent tempo... at least until I monkey with it the wrong way. Where Mongrel does best is against multi-colored decks with lots of shock lands that force opponents to damage themselves and turn into mountains to Blood Moon.

It has several weaknesses. It doesn't win enough against some of the tier 1 decks unless it gets lucky (like drawing Blood Moon on turn 3). If it doesn't manage to win by turn 5 or 6, then it has little game against resilient midrange decks. By then, Mongrel is top-decking with little in hand. It is particularly hamstrung by Jund's forced discard (Liliana, Inquisition of Kozilek, Collective Brutality).

I'm not attached to the Kiln Fiends or Satyr Firedancers, and I would be interested in trying out new angles.

The sideboard is largely untested, and it shows. I've mostly been playing the maindboard 60.

A well-played Jund deck rolls this one. Abrupt Decay takes care of Blood Moon (and skillful use of fetches in early turns can ensure there's a swamp and forest in play to use it). Liliana also takes care of Blood Moon. Tarmogoyf plus Liliana becomes impossible to remove very quickly, as the discards feed the 'goyf while removing answers from my hand.

Most of all, this deck wants creatures on the board at all times. This works out in early turns, if I make sure to mulligan until I have a one-drop in hand, but it starts to fail after the first wave of removal knocks out the little guys. After that, I have 2-4 mana but nothing really useful to play. My hand frequently is Titan's Strength of Mutagenic Growth with no target.

Some maybes... Remove some of the pump spells in favor of more threats or possibly charms/commands that have wider utility (even if they're weaker or pricier to cast).

Remove some Searing Blaze / Rift Bolt in favor of Lava Spike?

I also just need to take this deck back to basics and start testing again. I think I had more success when it was a combo of creature ramp and burn.
