Sideboard

Maybeboard

Mostly based on Esper Tortex, with a couple tweaks.

  • Land
    • Main change is to bump up the white. There is nothing blue that I want to cast right away, whereas there are a number of 1 or 2 mana white and black spells.
  • Creatures
    • -2 Stormbound Geist -- I really don't like having the double blue. I find I was getting color-screwed too much.
    • -2 Stinkweed Imp -- It's good, and one of the more reliable ways to dump cards into the yard, but I don't like having multiples of this, so I trimmed it back a bit. One was swapped for Sanitarium Skeleton
    • -1 Fume Spitter -- Only to make room for the Viscera Seer
    • -1 Mulldrifter -- Mostly to make room for Mistmoon Griffin
    • -1 Cephalid Sage -- I never really found this useful.
    • +1 Sanitarium Skeleton -- In grindy games, you might need a creature in hand to TortEx something else, but don't have enough cards in your library to waste 5 to dredge out Stinkweed Imp.
    • +1 Mistmoon Griffin -- There are many ways to bounce it out of your graveyard (Angelic Renewal, Supernatural Stamina, and TortEx), so you can get the free creature effect multiple times since that doesn't disrupt the effect. With TortEx + Viscera Seer you can even essentially flash in a creature from your hand for B. The ceiling on this seems absurdly high.
    • +1 Viscera Seer -- Probably any sac outlet will do. I went with Viscera Seer rather than (say) Carrion Feeder because Carrion Feeder (and such) are more susceptible to removal. With Seer, if you activate the ability, you are going to get something out of it.
    • +1 Kami of False Hope (maindeck) -- Aggro's the meta now, so we want a maindeck way to shut it down.
    • +1 Mnemonic Wall -- Adding this allows us to dredge with a little less concern about dredging some important spell. It's also a decent blocker.
  • Other Spells
    • -1 Grim Harvest -- I guess you can recur it if you keep a bunch of mana open, but it also disappears completely if you don't.
    • +2 Grim Discovery -- Gets back both a creature and a land, two effects I find I wanted a lot. The land return can help with color screw (especially if you get back an Ash Barrens). And it doesn't disappear if you can't pay a Recover cost (like Harvest). I added the Mnemonic Wall to make it at least possible to get these back.
    • +1 Rhystic Study -- Pet card. If we get it out early it can slow down faster strategies (or give you a card boost). This could almost certainly be replaced with something better, but I like it.
    • +2 Fade Away (sideboard) -- Destroys Elves (just have to catch them without an untapped Priest of Titania, but nobody expects this card right now so they're usually pretty careless). Also does decent work against other go-wide strategies. Can be useful to sacrifice your own creatures in a pinch.
    • +2 Supernatural Stamina -- A pseudo-Angelic Renewal that's also a decent combat trick. Could also be Undying Evil but that can technically be interrupted, and can't really be used on the same creature twice (easily).

Interactions:

  • Mistmoon Griffin -- everything? Supernatural Stamina and Angelic Renewal now bounce two creatures from your yard. Sac + TortEx + B flashes a creature from your hand. Sac + TortEx + BB flashes any creature from your graveyard.
  • Supernatural Stamina -- Cast on an evoked Mulldrifter and get it for 1cmc cheaper and 4 cards drawn. Not bad. Similar with Mournwhelk.
