Been hyped to make a tribal deck based on cats for a while now. Regal Caracal is a beast (quite litterally.) So, after playing against a spicy cat-tribal deck online and reading through ideas online, I (sort of) made a mix of my own.

Rotation gives and takes; the deck lost a net 1 set of dual-lands, fast removal and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar in the side against control.

Ixalan does present a few interesting options though;

  • Tribal synergies; Uncharted Territory can fill a couple of the missing slots for creature spells.Vanquisher's Banner plays a similar role to Lifecrafter's Bestiary. It seems somewhat costly though for this deck. Radiant Destiny is a nice one-or-two-of for boosting.

  • Shapers' Sanctuary can give an edge in matches with agressive targetting removal

  • Ixalan's Binding and Settle the Wreckage seems like decent sideboard options against pesky permanent cards (combo-cards, The Scarab God etc.) and agressive decks

  • Huatli, Radiant Champion has potential. The card has been featured in a couple of cat/token related decks on Youtube, and it seems pretty good here. You easily get a lot of loyalty points with a few creatures on the field, so ultimate can be within range potentially the turn after she hits the field. The minus ability can close out a game if used on a pouncer or regain a bit extra life if used on one of the lifelinkers. The ultimate draws you cards. Lots of cards.

Warning: the ideas and points below should (for your health) be taken with a grain of salt
  • Originally this deck started out as a Naya-build featuring Samut, Voice of Dissent, which can work surprisingly well with Felidar Sovereign on the attack. I tested this out with Invigorated Rampage (what's not to love about a 5/1 double-strike trampler,) but it didn't hit off as I had hoped. The Samut-combo had it's moments though

  • Blue seems like the most natural inclusion, mostly due to the tough time you can have against Approach-decks. This gives you Champion of Wits for filtering your hand, setting up your pouncers to become 4/4 tokens at turn 5 and gives you countermagic in the sideboard

  • Lastly, black gives additional removal (fatal pushes etc.,) options like Doomfall/Dreamstealer against control and Hidden Stockpile for a more token-heavy approach

I'm still tweaking the deck and sideboard, so suggestions for improvements and to deal with the existing meta would be appreciated.

Finally got the most of the pieces for the deck and took it to a 2-1 finish. Results were 2-1 against Drake Visions, 1-0 against another cat tribal deck and 0-2 against Temur Energy.

Thoughts: I ended up changing a couple of cards before FNM, moving my Felidar Cubs from side to main, and trading a Nissa with Gideon of the Trials to see how he worked. Although the ability is reassuring to have, Felidar ended up being a flat 2/2 for the most part. Gideon actually pulled his weight in the cat-mirror, "debuffing" my opponents' strongest creature from behind a(nother) wall of kittens. I most certainly would have benefitted from more creature-generation in the last set.

I've been contemplating widening the mana-base to include red again for some discard/draw, but for now I'll test having an Anointed Procession in the side for specific decks
