A Black/Blue/Green control deck for the new RTR standard season.
Over the course of the past week the deck has gone through many changes. Testing has proven that Thragtusk, Jace, and Vampire Nighthawk are all extremely good and are what the deck wants to be doing. Vraska has been either great or terrible, but most people will scoop to her regardless which is pretty sweet.
Another fact: the matches can take a long time. Since you're gaining so much life & trading ground creatures, the deck is a slow grind. However, it has cards some decks can't beat, so you should get concessions from them rather easily. The midrange decks are going to be the longest matchups, probably even longer than the control matchup.
Barter in Blood is one of the biggest potential blowout cards you can cast with this deck. There is a 2nd in the sideboard. Cyclonic Rift has also been quite good, but its usually used as a safety net to fall back on. However, against the G/W, U/W, and Bant decks (aka decks with Restoration Angel), Cyclonic Rift is the best card you have against them. It's hard to board it out, but it is correct to do so occasionally. One could consider adding a second Cyclonic Rift to the board.
Sideboard: Bloodline Keeper Flip is insane. People board out most of their removal against you - (especially Bonfire of the Damned and Mizzium Mortars, and the Bant decks only way to deal with it is Detention Sphere/Oblivion Ring or Wrath. Vampire Nighthawk & Bloodline Keeper Flip keep Sigarda, Host of Herons in check. Liliana of the Veil is there for Geist of Saint Traft matchups. If the card proves to be popular in the new format definitely add another Liliana to the board (or maybe even maindeck). For non-liliana fans, a more affordable substitute, (or perhaps even better due to synergies with Augur of Bolas and Snapcaster Mage and being less intensive on the mana 1BB, Tribute to Hunger should also be explored. The argument for the 2nd Tamiyo, the Moon Sage over the singleton Vraska the Unseen has been made (and is probably correct), but for now I'm testing with the mix maindeck.
Feel free to explore new possibilities and let me know what you think. Thanks again everyone for stopping by and looking at the deck & for the feedback. It's been very helpful. +1 if you like it, always appreciated :)
Since both Simic and Dimir are in Gatecrash, many would think that BUG is not a very good deck because it didn't get much support. I happen to think BUG is much stronger than quite a few other decks though for a few reasons. BUG has access to Thragtusk, which is good against zombies, Curse of Death's Hold and Sever the Bloodline against tokens, and has Duress, Abrupt Decay, Underworld Connections, Nephalia Drownyard, and Vraska the Unseen against other control decks. The problem with BUG is it's lack of a true sweeper. Red has a plentiful supply, u/w has Supreme Verdict and Terminus. Mutilate can't really be considered yet because of the lack of swamps needed to support the manabase currently. The other issue this deck has is that of every deck without a sweeper - it's a little weak to Sigarda, Host of Herons. The additions of more Vampire Nighthawk could be the solution if the angel becomes too popular. This control deck is metagame dependent, but it has many angles of attack. Definitely keep this deck in mind though, because if U/W/x Control becomes popular, this deck really preys upon it.
It could be that this deck needs 27 lands in the main deck and that the Nephalia Drownyard in the sideboard should come in for the 2nd Dissipate in the main deck. It also needs a little more card draw in order to keep the engine moving, but this deck wants to be reactive early & proactive the later the game goes. Amass the Components, Divination, or Inspiration could be a viable inclusion. Inaction Injunction is an interesting card, and needs to be tested with. If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this, I will welcome the suggestions with open arms. Thanks for looking!
How do you match up against the mill decks. i ran somethingsimilar to this vs a gate mill with a couple stompers they used the ramp to get and had a rough time

I have no idea @jdsacdc. Havn't seen any of them. They aren't popular in my area. This was pretty much tuned to beat zombies & miracle control decks. I think you want to look at esper, bant, 4 color, or 5 color control right now. 5 color is my favorite at the moment.
